Fitness YouTuber Will Tennyson regularly makes videos in which he follows the diets and workouts of some of the biggest stars of today, from DC superhero actors Jason Momoa and Gal Gadot to boxing champion Mike Tyson. In his latest video, Will (who was born in 1994) takes a look back in time and spends the day following some of the most popular workouts and fad diets of the 1980s.
He starts out with a breakfast of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, accompanied by two quintessential ’80s diet staples: grapefruit and cottage cheese. The grapefruit diet became known as the “10 days, 10 pounds off” diet in the ’80s, due to the popular belief that the fruit contained an enzyme that helped in burning fat. “While there are many alternate uses for the grapefruit, burning fat is not one of them,” says Will. He points out, however, that as the grapefruit diet tended to restrict calorie intake to 800 per day, there may well have been some weight loss results unrelated to the fruit itself.
Breakfast is followed by the first workout of the day, an at-home session in which Will follows a video by the ’80s fitness icon herself, Jane Fonda, which thoroughly tests his mobility and flexibility. After working up a sweat, it’s time for lunch: tricolore pasta salad with cherry tomatoes, cucumber, topped with blackened chicken breasts.
Pre-workout meal down, Will heads off for a weight training session, emulating the back and shoulders routine of Lee Haney, the bodybuilder who won the Mr. Olympia competition eight times in a row from 1984 to 1991 — that’s even more than Arnold Schwarzenegger. The compound movement-focused workout consists of 4 sets of 10 front lat pulldowns, 4 sets of 8 barbell rows, 4 sets of 10 cable rows, 4-5 sets of 6-8 military press, 4 sets of 10 side lateral raises, and 4 sets of 8 upright rows.
“It was a really good workout, if I had to critique that in any way I’d have to say I’m not a fan of the order of the exercises,” he says. “I’d probably have gone shoulders to back, shoulders to back, alternating the two.”
Will follows this up with a post-workout meal of a granola bar and a donut, and then shortly after it’s time for dinner, which consists of another ’80s classic: sloppy joes. “If you’re trying to hit your protein, it’s a great option,” he says.
