JENNIFER: WENDY, GO AHEAD AND START AND TELL US ABOUT TASTE WISE KIDS >> SO TASTE WISE KIDS IS A NONPROFIT THAT TEACHES KIDS WHERE THEIR FOOD COMES FROM AND HOW TO BUILD HEALTHY EATING HABITS. WE WORK WITH KIDS ALL OVER BALTIMORE. IT LOOKS DIFFERENT THESE DAYS IN THE VIRTUAL SPACE, BUT WE ARE STILL SERVING LOTS OF FAMILIES AND KIDS AND MAKING SURE THAT NOT ONLY ARE THEY THINKING ABOUT FOOD IN NEW WAYS BUT ALSO GETTING A CHANCE TO INTERACT WITH FOOD THEY HAVE AT HOME AND MATERIALS THAT WE’RE PROVIDING THEM SO THEY’RE CONTINUING TO LEARN AND GROW IN THEIR LEARNING THROUGHOUT THIS YEAR. JENNIFER: HOW ARE YOU DOING THAT, CONNECTING ONLINE WITH THESE KIDS? SOME SURE. SO WE ARE CONTINUING OUR DAYS OF TASTE PROGRAM. IT’S USUALLY IN SCHOOLS AND ON FARMS. OBVIOUSLY, THIS YEAR WE’LL BRING THE SCHOOLS AND THE FARMS TO THEM. WE’RE PROVIDING THEM MATERIALS THAT ARE BEING SENT HOME AND PROVIDING VIDEOS THAT THEY CAN WATCH AND ALSO TRY TO HAVE THEM INTERACT ONE ON ONE — NOT ONE ON ONE, CLASS BY CLASS, WITH CHEFS LIVE AS WELL. AND THEN WE ALSO HAVE, WHICH WE’RE EXCITED ABOUT, WHICH ACTUALLY HAPPENS THROUGH THE COVID — WAS RESPONSE TO COVID, BUT NOW IT’S BECOME A WHOLE NEW PROGRAM FOR US, CALLED TASTE WISE KIDS AT HOME. WE HAVE NEW MATERIALS, ACTIVITIES AND INFORMATION FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES TO DIG IN AND PLAY AT HOME AROUND FOOD. THOSE MATERIALS ARE AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE AS WELL AS WE SENT OUT EMAILS. IF YOU’RE ON OUR EMAIL LIST EACH WEEK, WE PROVIDE A FAMILY FOOD TIP AS WELL AS RECIPES AND FUN ACTIVITIES LIKE DOING SCAVENGER HUNTS IN YOUR KITCHEN OR LEARNING HOW TO MAKE A SALAD DRESSING THAT HAVE MINIMAL ACTIVITIES. ALL OF THAT IS AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE. JENNIFER: THIS IS WHERE THE SHE WAS COME IN. YOU HAVE A BIG FUNDRAISER COMING UP. JERRY, TELL US ABOUT THAT. WHAT ARE YOU DOING? >> WE’RE DOING A VIRTUAL COMPETITION. AND WE HAVE FOUR SHE WAS, TWO DIFFERENT TEAMS. AND IT’S BEEN VERY EXCITING TO DO. I CAN’T TELL YOU WHAT THE INGREDIENTS ARE FOR THE THING. YOU HAVE TO SEE IT ON OCTOBER 5. BUT I DID A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING BAGEL TUNA. SO I BASICALLY TOASTED EVERYTHING BAGELS, CRUSTED THE TUNA WITH THAT, AND WE HAVE A BEAUTIFUL FRESH TOMATOES AND AVOCADOS AND CUCUMBERS. MOST OF THEM ARE FROM MARYLAND FARMS. JENNIFER: THAT’S IMPORTANT TOO IS WHERE YOU GET A LOT OF SOURCE OF PROTEINS IS WORKING WITH THE FARMS DEPENDING ON YOU MORE THAN EVER DURING COVID. >> YES, ALL INGREDIENTS THAT WE USE FOR THIS PARTICULAR COMPETITION ARE MARYLAND FARMS PRODUCED. THE SECRET INGREDIENT IS THE MOST INTERESTING ONE WHICH WE WON’T TALK ABOUT. >> WE HAVE LOTS OF SECRETS. YOU HAVE TO WATCH ON OCTOBER 5. >> I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW WHAT IT WAS WHEN IT SHOWED UP. ALL THE SHE WAS ARE LIKE, WHAT’S THAT? >> HOW IMPORTANT IS THE FUNDRAISER, WENDY. >> REALLY IMPORTANT. THE MORE MONEY WE CAN RAISE, THE MORE KIDS WE CAN SERVE, AS WE ARE TRYING TO GET CREATIVE AND MAKING SURE THE KIDS AND FAMILIES HAVE THE MATERIALS THEY NEED AT HOME, CONTINUE TO DO THE WORK WITH US. IT’S ALSO IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT’S A WAY TO SHOWCASE WHAT OUR FARMERS AND CHEFS AND FOOD ENTREPRENEURS ARE DOING AND HELP PUB SIZE WHAT’S GOING ON FOR THEM AS WELL. IT’S A CRITICAL FUNDRAISER EVERY YEAR FOR US. IN SOME WAYS, IT’S MORE IMPORTANT THIS YEAR AS WE’RE ABLE TO RAISE AS MUCH MONEY AS WE CAN. >> CHEFS LIKE JERRY, YOU HAD TO HUSTLE DURING ALL THIS.
