Improving the mental health of young refugees in Uganda through sport

October 12, 2020

World Mental Health Day 2020 was a moment to recall the importance of addressing mental health issues at a time when close to 1 billion people live with a mental disorder, and when billions of people around the world have seen their mental wellbeing affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Refugees are among the most vulnerable to the consequences of the pandemic, and mental health conditions amongst people forced from their homes by conflict and war are already two or three times higher than in the general population, with one in five people experiencing mental health challenges. Young refugees live with the daily stress and anxiety of being forcibly displaced, but one thing that can make a real difference to their mental and physical wellbeing is sport.

This fact means that, three years on from its establishment by the IOC, the mission of the Olympic Refuge Foundation (ORF) is

CDC study: ‘Urgent need’ to slow spread of coronavirus among young adults

October 9, 2020

| Health Article

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study released Friday warned that there is an “urgent need” to address the spread of the coronavirus among young adults.

The study found that increases among transmission in younger people are often a precursor to transmission among older, higher-risk people.

The study examined 767 counties in June and July that were “hot spots,” meaning they had high levels of virus spread. The study found that the spread of the virus, measured by the percentage of positive tests, began rising first in people aged 24 and under, before later rising in older, more vulnerable age groups.

The findings “provide evidence that among young adults, those aged 18–24 years demonstrate the earliest increases in percent positivity; and underscore the importance of reducing transmission from younger populations to those at highest risk for severe illness or death,” the study said

“Addressing transmission among young adults

‘Joyful journaling’ app from University of Michigan grads helps young people understand their mental health

October 8, 2020

ANN ARBOR, MI — Drew Pilat, Tommy Searle, Jack Kornet and Mars Hovasse were frustrated by the lack of self-care resources they said they found available to students when they were undergrads at the University of Michigan.

University counseling services were overwhelmed, and waitlists often stretched for weeks, and the self-care resources available were old and clinical, they said.

So, the four friends decided to create a resource of their own: Wellnest, a “joyful journaling” app where users can use their voice to make journal entries to help them get ready for their day, understand their moods or just make a few quick notes.

“We know that journaling is incredibly healthy and accessible, but not many of our peers were actually doing it,” Pilat said. “We also liked this shift because the majority of students experiencing mental health issues don’t seek help, but we could still reach them with Wellnest.”

Treatment Reverses Young Man’s Type 1 Diabetes. Will It Last? | Health News

By Serena Gordon

(HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 7, 2020 (HealthDay News) — After starting a drug that’s officially approved to treat a type of blood cancer, a young man with type 1 diabetes was able to stop using insulin.

He’s been off insulin since August 2018 — more than two years.

Dr. Lisa Forbes — his doctor and co-author of a letter describing his case in the Oct. 8 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine — stopped short of calling the drug a cure for type 1 diabetes.

But Forbes, an assistant professor of pediatrics, immunology, allergy and rheumatology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, said the patient’s diabetes appears to have been reversed. She hopes it will stay that way as long as he keeps taking the oral medication called ruxolitinib (Jakafi). It’s in a class of medications known as JAK inhibitors.

Whether this drug

Europe’s Second Covid Wave Starts to Spill Over From Young to Old

October 6, 2020

| Health

Since the summer, Europe’s second wave of the coronavirus has mainly affected young people, who usually have mild or no symptoms. But infections are beginning to leak into older age groups, the latest data show, often spreading from younger to older members of the same family.

Cases among those aged over 65 are increasing in most European countries, according to data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. As a result, hospitalizations and deaths—which stayed low for much of the summer while infections spread among young people less likely to fall severely ill—are starting to rise too.

Many European countries are now recording more cases than they did in the spring, but that is partly because of better detection. The health emergency isn’t as serious as it was at the time, when only a fraction of infected people were tested for the virus, and some hospitals in countries

Fire and police departments responded around 9:50 p.m. to a fire alarm at Devereux Advanced Behavior Health facility, 1150 Devereux Drive, where they found patients fighting and assaulting employees, according to League City police.

The facility is part of a national nonprofit serving children with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health issues, according to the organization’s website. The League City location is a residential facility housing young people ages 11 to 22 who have “complex treatment needs.”

Officers who arrived at the scene saw patients rioting inside the building, broken windows and furniture barricading doors. They requested assistance from the Webster Police Department, Galveston County Sheriff’s Department and Texas Department of Public Safety.

Young children advised to eat just one square of chocolate a week in Irish Gov’s new guidelines

October 2, 2020

| Dept Of Health

Young children should eat just one square of chocolate per week, according to the Irish Government’s new healthy eating guidelines.

The Department of Health launched its first-ever National Healthy Eating Guidelines on Thursday, which outline which foods children aged between one and four should avoid.

The guidelines advise parents with children in that age bracket to give their kids tiny portions of unhealthy foods, suggesting half a biscuit a week or three individual potato chips.

The new guidelines advise giving children three small meals a day in addition to two or three healthy snacks since children have “small tummies” at that age.

Any foods high in fat, sugar, or salt, should be limited to one “tiny” portion a week, the guidelines say.

The guidelines were launched by Health Minister Stephen Donnelly, Children’s Minister Roderic O’Gorman, and Minister for Public Health and Wellbeing Frank Feighan on Thursday.

The guidelines noted a

(Reuters) – Coronavirus cases among young adults rose steadily across the United States in recent weeks as universities reopened, suggesting the need for this group to take more measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, a U.S. health agency said.

Universities that want to reopen for in-person learning need to implement mitigation steps such as mask wearing and social distancing to curb the spread of the virus among young adults, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in the report.

As colleges reopened, many more young people got covid-19, CDC reports

September 29, 2020

The Northeast saw the biggest spike in virus cases among 18- to 22-year-olds, with a 144 percent increase. Cases in the Midwest among that age group also rose dramatically, with a 123 percent increase.

Also on Tuesday, a public university in North Carolina mourned the death of a student from complications that followed a covid-19 diagnosis.

As colleges across the country resume classes this fall, the incidence of virus cases is being closely watched to see if universities are increasing the spread of the novel coronavirus — and what students and school officials can do to try to prevent that.

About 45 percent of 18- to 22-year-olds are enrolled in college, according to the CDC. Colleges have crafted a wide array of plans, including efforts to starkly reduce communal housing, ramp up testing and persuade students to keep their distance from others. Some schools have seen case numbers in the

The uptick in cases was not solely attributable to increased testing and could be linked to some universities resuming in-person attendance, the CDC researchers said. They also said transmission
