A Wisconsin restaurant is installing lights that reportedly kill airborne viruses

The Blind Horse Restaurant & Winery in Kohler, Wisconsin, is reportedly the first restaurant in the U.S. to install far-UVC light technology, according to a press release.

Healthe, Inc., a Florida-based company, made the lights — called “Healthe Space” lights — which “provide real-time mitigation of harmful pathogens and viruses,” the release said.

According to the company, the lights are mounted on the ceiling and give off general light as well as “far-UVC 222 sanitizing light to clean air and surfaces.”

MDH says 1,178 new cases have been identified across the state in the past 24 hours. It’s the fifth day in a row of 1,000-plus new cases. Minnesota has passed the 1,000 mark nine of the past 12 days.

Just under 18,000 COVID tests were administered by private and state labs in Minnesota in the past 24-hour period – significantly lower than the previous four days, which averaged about 30,000 per day.

The Latest: Tensions rise as virus cases surge in Wisconsin, Dakotas

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — A surge of coronavirus cases in Wisconsin and the Dakotas is forcing a scramble for hospital beds and raising political tensions, as the Upper Midwest and Plains emerge as one of the nation’s most troubling hot spots.

The three states now lead all others in new cases per capita, after months in which many politicians and residents rejected mask requirements while downplaying the risks of the disease that has now killed over 210,000 Americans.

“It’s an emotional roller coaster,” said Melissa Resch, a nurse at Wisconsin’s Aspirus Wausau Hospital, which is working to add beds and reassign staff to keep up with a rising caseload of virus patients, many gravely ill.

The Wisconsin Hospital Association and a coalition of health care and business organizations have formed a coalition to encourage people to wear masks and take other precautions to check the surge in COVID-19 infections in the state.

“What we know is that masks work,” said Eric Borgerding, president and CEO of the Wisconsin Hospital Association. “And whether it’s through a mandate or through very vigilant use and encouragement of using masks, we know that it works.”

Losing one more person to suicide is unacceptable. But how do we start making changes?

More than 17 million adults in the United States have endured at least one major depressive episode in the last year, according to National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

And more than 17.1 million kids in the U.S. have a psychiatric disorder, according to Rogers Behavior Health.

Instead of setting these statistics off to the side as a topic that’s separate from life and separate from sports news – until a tragedy happens – let’s start talking about what those numbers mean.

For a lot of people – including athletes – mental health equates to shame, humiliation and vulnerability, when really it could be an

Why a treatment used for over a century on diseases like measles, mumps and influenza could work to treat the new coronavirus strain.

USA TODAY

A team of researchers, including two from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has solved a long-running biological mystery, reporting the discovery of the first two viral relatives of rubella, also known as German Measles.

“Rubella was this lone wolf, this mystery, this virus that never had any relatives,” said Tony Goldberg, an epidemiologist at UW, who maintains a research project in Uganda’s Kibale National Park. It was at Kibale that one of the two new viral relatives was found in the aptly named cyclops leaf-nosed bat. The bat virus has been named ruhugu.

Goldberg and his former doctoral student Andrew J. Bennett teamed up with U.S. and German researchers to report the two rubella relatives in a paper published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

The claim: “Wisconsin Republicans have not passed a single bill in 6 months.”

The stalemate between a Democratic governor and a Republican-dominated Legislature has left Wisconsin without a clear path forward to address the coronavirus pandemic.

Gov. Tony Evers has declared multiple states of emergency to implement a stay-at-home order and mask mandates. Republicans — who have a stranglehold on both Legislative houses — have challenged those in court, once successfully.

But they have chosen not to overturn Evers’ orders themselves, despite having the authority to do so.

One viral Facebook post goes a step farther to say Republican legislators haven’t done anything at all of late.

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin health officials announced Wednesday that a field hospital will open next week at the state fairgrounds near Milwaukee as a surge in COVID-19 cases threatens to overwhelm hospitals.

Wisconsin has become a hot spot for the disease over the last month, ranking third nationwide this week in new cases per capita over the last two weeks. Health experts have attributed the spike to the reopening of colleges and K-12 schools as well as general fatigue over wearing masks and socially distancing.

State Department of Health Services Secretary Andrea Palm told reporters during a video conference that the facility

Wisconsin will be opening a field hospital at the state fairgrounds near Milwaukee next week as a spike in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations is threatening to overwhelm hospital systems, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) announced Wednesday.

The state has become one of the nation’s new COVID-19 hot spots in recent weeks and has ranked third nationwide this week in daily new cases per capita, according to the Associated Press. Health officials have attributed the surge to the reopening of universities and K-12 schools and fatigue among the public over health measures such as wearing masks and social distancing.
