Traditional Halloween activities such as trick-or-treating will not be cancelled in Tulsa County this year.

“Oh, heck, no,” said Dr. Bruce Dart, executive director of the Tulsa Health Department.

“Halloween is something that can still be fun for kids and families, as long as people follow the same general recommendations of watching your distance, washing your hands and avoiding crowded, indoor events,” Dart said Tuesday during a regular city/county news briefing on COVID-19.

“Frankly, to be honest, I can’t think of a better opportunity to have some fun while wearing a mask,” he said.

However, Dart said it is important for everyone to make modifications, including masks that cover both the nose and mouth.

“A costume mask should not be used unless it is made

| Health Education

A mobile site for COVID-19 testing developed for neighborhoods where traditional health care locations aren’t readily accessible will visit locations around the Lehigh Valley over the next few weeks.

The CATE Mobile Response Unit — CATE stands for Community Accessible Testing & Education — was developed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Highmark Blue Shield, Independence Blue Cross, and Latino Connection.

In collaboration with St. Luke’s University Health Network and other community partners, the unit will conduct COVID-19 testing for people who are showing symptoms or who have been exposed to the pandemic illness, while also educating the public on how to stay healthy and safe.

The unit’s tagline is “Sharing knowledge to erase fear,” which it accomplishes through widespread community health care and health education offered for free and with no insurance required.

CATE’s schedule is as follows:

Allentown (Flu shots also available): Buck Boyle Park, 10 Pump

AP FACT CHECK: Debate week’s twisted tales on virus, climate

October 10, 2020

| Health Facts

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sidelined but not silenced, President Donald Trump demonstrated anew this past week he can’t be relied on to give a straight account of the disease that has afflicted millions, now including him. He heralded the arrival of a COVID-19 cure, which did not happen, and likened the coronavirus to the common flu even while knowing better.

The week featured the only vice presidential debate of the 2020 campaign and an emphasis on policy lacking in the virulent Trump vs. Joe Biden showdown of the week before.

Vice President Mike Pence asserted Trump respects the science on climate change when actually the president mocks it, and Pence defended a White House gathering that the government’s infectious disease chief branded a super-spreader event. His Democratic rival, California Sen. Kamala Harris, tripped on tax policy while wrongly accusing Trump of dismissing the pandemic as a hoax.

Rep. Hayes tests negative for virus, 3 weeks after diagnosis

WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes said a test Saturday showed no signs of the coronavirus in her body, nearly three weeks after she was diagnosed with COVID-19.

The Democrat, who represents Connecticut’s 5th District, has been documenting her battle against the disease on social media since revealing her positive test results on Sept. 20.

“Tossed and turned most of the night,” she posted on Sept. 21. “Breathing is so labored.”

Hayes said a follow-up COVID-19 test on Saturday came back negative. She said she also received a flu shot and made an appointment with the American Red Cross to donate plasma.

“We can all do our part to keep our community safe,” she tweeted Saturday in a post followed by three mask-wearing emojis and the hashtag “#HealthyATHome.”

CMS Gives Hospitals 14 Weeks to Start Daily COVID, Flu Reports

| Health Article

Editor’s note: Find the latest COVID-19 news and guidance in Medscape’s Coronavirus Resource Center.

The federal government is giving hospitals 14 weeks to comply with daily reporting requirements for COVID-19.

Hospitals that fail to meet the requirements will be barred from participating in Medicare and Medicaid, as announced in late August in a final rule.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will send letters on October 7 to all 6200 hospitals that receive reimbursement from the two federal health programs informing them of how well they are doing now, said CMS Administrator Seema Verma on a press call.

Verma would not give an estimate on how many hospitals are currently not compliant. But Deborah Birx, MD, a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, said on the call that 86% of hospitals are currently reporting daily.

Federal officials on the call also announced that hospitals would have

In less than a month, Andy’s unemployment benefits will run out. He is currently on week 36 of his Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), a program created under the federal CARES Act for independent contractors and other workers who are ineligible for traditional unemployment. In D.C., these workers get a minimum of $179 every week for a total of 39 weeks.

“What program will D.C. be offering to people on PUA?” he asks. “What do they expect us to do? How do they expect us to pay our bills? How can we survive with $0? Winter is coming. It’s not going to get any easier.”

Andy, who works in international development, saw his income drop to zero in mid-January as the coronavirus pandemic began to impact travel. Like so many residents, Andy found even applying for PUA to be a nightmare. He was forced to wait until late April—around the
