As Trump tweets false flu claims, here are the facts about the ‘twindemic’ that could be coming

Stop comparing the coronavirus and the flu — and start preparing to face them both this fall.

That’s the message from many doctors and public health experts after President Trump downplayed the coronavirus threat on Tuesday by tweeting that Americans should learn to live with COVID-19 as they have adapted to deal with seasonal influenza.

“Flu season is coming up! Many people every year, sometimes over 100,000, and despite the Vaccine, die from the Flu,” Trump tweeted, less than a day after returning to the White House following his hospitalization for COVID-19 at Walter Reed Medical Center over the weekend. “Are we going to close down our Country? No, we have learned to live with it, just like we are learning to live with Covid, in most populations far less lethal!!!”

US presidents’ health through the years: secrets, lies, tweets

October 7, 2020

| Health Facts

How healthy is Donald Trump, really? Contradictory and incomplete information from officials since the president contracted coronavirus confirms that the health of the White House incumbent is a well-kept secret.

Analysts also say Trump has displayed a savvy use of digital tools to try to steer coverage of the first major presidential health crisis of the social media age.

Since the Friday announcement of Trump’s positive test, his personal doctor Sean Conley has been accused of giving fragmented and confusing information that conflicted with what Chief of Staff Mark Meadows was saying.

According to Matthew Algeo, the author of several books about the recurring lies of US leaders, presidents are not compelled to be forthcoming about their health, so it’s no surprise if they are not.

“We just basically are operating on the honor system when it comes to our president’s health,” he said.

With Trump’s reelection bid less than

Fighting COVID-19 Misinformation, Global Health Student Tweets the Truth

As spring term approached in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, University of Oregon senior Myriah Kunipo-Aguirre found herself hunkered down at her parent’s house in Carson, California.

She needed to complete field work for her global health minor, but the UO canceled travel and internship programs as it grappled with the spread of COVID-19.

Kristin Yarris, director of the Global Health Program, recognized the problem confronting Kunipo-Aguirre and other students. She quickly launched a course called Global Health Crisis to give students a chance to complete required field experience where they resided.

Kunipo-Aguirre tracked the outbreak in her own backyard—Los Angeles County—using Twitter to report on the emergency response of state and county officials. With 10 million residents, Los Angeles County is the most populous county in the country, and among the first to impose lockdown measures intended to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Kunipo-Aguirre created a Twitter feed

Coronavirus: Trump leaves hospital, tweets that he’ll be back on campaign trail soon

Bethesda, Md. — President Donald Trump staged a dramatic return to the White House Monday night after leaving the military hospital where he has been receiving an unprecedented level of care for Covid-19. He immediately ignited a new controversy by declaring that despite his illness the nation should not fear the virus that has killed more than 210,000 Americans — and then he entered the White House without a protective mask.

Trump’s message alarmed infectious disease experts and suggested the president’s own illness had not caused him to rethink his often-cavalier attitude toward the disease, which has also infected the first lady and several White House aides, including new cases revealed on Monday.

Landing at the White House on Marine One, Trump gingerly climbed the South Portico steps, removed his mask and declared, “I feel good.” He gave a double thumbs-up to the departing helicopter from the portico terrace, where

US President Donald Trump has resumed making calls and tweeting from hospital, but doctors say his progress on Sunday will be crucial to see if he develops a more severe form of Covid-19.

The president’s medical team was due to give an update of the his condition late Sunday morning.

Trump posted a video Saturday from the business suite in Walter Reed medical center near Washington, saying he was improving and would be “back soon” — but that the crucial coming days would be “the real test.”

On Sunday, his deputy campaign manager Jason Miller told ABC he had spoken to Trump for a half-hour Saturday and that the president was eager for political news with the November 3 election less than a month away.
