How Much Would Trump’s Coronavirus Treatment Cost Most Americans?

October 7, 2020

| Health News

The New York Times is investigating the costs associated with testing and treatment for the coronavirus and how the pandemic is changing health care in America. You can read more about the project and submit your medical bills here.

President Trump spent three days in the hospital. He arrived and left by helicopter. And he received multiple coronavirus tests, oxygen, steroids and an experimental antibody treatment.

For someone who isn’t president, that would cost more than $100,000 in the American health system. Patients could face significant surprise bills and medical debt even after health insurance paid its share.

The biggest financial risks would come not from the hospital stay but from the services provided elsewhere, including helicopter transit and repeated coronavirus testing.

Mr. Trump has praised the high quality of care he received at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and has played down the risk of the virus.

Ethicists say Trump special treatment raises fairness issues

October 7, 2020

| Health News

The special treatment President Donald Trump received to access an experimental COVID-19 drug raises fairness issues that start with the flawed health care system many Americans endure and end with the public’s right to know more about his condition, ethics and medical experts say.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. revealed on Tuesday how rare it was for anyone to get the drug it gave Trump outside of studies testing its safety and effectiveness. The drug, which supplies antibodies to help the immune system clear the coronavirus, is widely viewed as very promising.

Trump also received the antiviral remdesivir and the steroid dexamethasone, and it’s impossible to know whether any of these drugs did him any good.

“He deserves special treatment by virtue of his office,” said George Annas, who heads Boston University’s center for law and health ethics. “The question is whether it’s good treatment.”

These drugs are unproven for mild illness

Under America’s Broken Health Care System, Some Who Downplayed COVID-19 Received the Best Treatment For It

| Health Center

Jodi Click, who suffers from severe Crohn’s Disease, has long been accustomed to frequent doctors visits and medical procedures. But nothing prepared the 40-year-old for her lengthy battle with COVID-19 this year. After contracting the virus in March, she has spent months enduring the aftermath of the disease: unpredictable blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms, and low oxygenation levels. She now relies on a walker for mobility.

Her wallet hasn’t recovered either. Because of her prolonged illness, she quit her teaching job, which meant she lost her employer health insurance and was forced to switch to a government insurance plan amidst a wave of health problems. She’s now struggling to afford basic necessities, while waiting weeks for her insurance to authorize payment for medical procedures, like an echocardiogram, that her doctors recommend. “I will probably have to sell my house and move home with my parents,” Click says, “even though I

Antibiotics May Be Best First Treatment for Appendicitis | Health News

By Steven Reinberg, HealthDay Reporter

(HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Oct. 6, 2020 (HealthDay News) — For some patients suffering from appendicitis, antibiotics may do the trick, a large U.S. trial suggests.

More than 70% of patients who received antibiotics avoided surgery for at least 90 days, according to the new report.

“When we compared the outcomes of people treated with antibiotics alone or surgery to remove the appendix, we found that people receiving either treatment felt well at 30 days,” said co-principal investigator Dr. David Talan. “In terms of overall health status, antibiotics were no worse than surgery and allowed most people to avoid an operation in the short term.”

Talan is a professor of emergency medicine and infectious diseases at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

In the trial, more than 1,500 patients in 14 U.S. states randomly received antibiotics first or an appendectomy. The trial is the largest

Trump’s covid-19 medical treatment makes no sense

October 6, 2020

| Health

The medical obscurity began Friday, when we learned of the president’s diagnosis but got no information regarding prior tests and their results — important facts when trying to provide contact tracing and inform people if they might be at risk for a potentially deadly illness. Besides the positive test Thursday night, we then learned, Trump might have had symptoms earlier that day at a fundraiser in Bedminster, N.J., along with “low grade fevers and a cough” early Friday, which indicated that he had covid-19, the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Behind the scenes, White House physicians, who can consult directly with any expert in the world they might want to reach, discussed potential treatments and opted for an experimental medication, an antibody cocktail made of artificial molecules that fight the spread of the virus in the body. Regeneron’s monoclonal antibody cocktail is not yet approved by the Food and

Doctors said the President received the steroid Dexamethasone—a medication commonly used for those with moderate to severe illness

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After spending the weekend at Walter Reed Military Hospital, President Trump returned home to the White House on Monday. The President credited excellent treatment while hospitalized as one of the keys to his recovery.

Doctors at Atrium Health say President Trump received multiple treatments including an experimental antibody, Remdesivir, and a steroid known as Dexamethasone.

“It works by decreasing the inflammation in someone’s body and in the case of the coronavirus infection it reduces the lung inflammation,” Dr. Lewis McCurdy said.

We’re told this same medication is used for many other coronavirus patients — especially those with moderate illness or who may have trouble breathing.

Atrium Health is also teaming up with Wake Forest to launch

Trump steroid treatment for COVID-19 raises potential side effect risk

October 6, 2020

By Carl O’Donnell and Deena Beasley

(Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump is being treated for COVID-19 with a steroid that is recommended for severe cases of the illness and that comes with risks of serious side effects, including mood swings, aggression and confusion.

Trump’s medical team on Sunday said the president was started on dexamethasone, a generic steroid long and widely used to reduce inflammation associated with other diseases. The steroid was begun after Trump experienced low oxygen levels.

White House officials have painted a rosy picture of Trump’s condition, saying he could be discharged from the hospital as soon as Monday. But dexamethasone has typically been reserved for more serious cases.

A study in June that was hailed as a breakthrough showed that use of the steroid reduced death rates by around a third among the most severely ill hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Dexamethasone is used to treat immune

Trump’s COVID-19 treatment raises red flags in medical community

Overlake Medical Center’s director of pulmonary care said the medicine President Trump is being given is reserved for COVID-19 patients needing oxygen.

BELLEVUE, Wash. — President Donald Trump briefly ventured out in a motorcade on Sunday to salute cheering supporters outside Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, a move that disregarded precautions meant to contain the deadly virus that has forced his hospitalization and killed more than 209,000 Americans.

“They’ve been out there for a long time and they’ve got Trump flags – they love our country,” Trump said in a Twitter video.

But the move drew criticism on social media about the president putting those in the SUV with him at risk of contracting the virus. Secret Service agents inside the vehicle could be seen in masks and other protective gear.

The president tweeted that he would be discharged Monday night from the military hospital. White House officials said
