Overnight Health Care: Regeneron asks for emergency authorization of coronavirus treatment Trump received | McConnell says he hasn’t visited White House in two months due to coronavirus | Employer-sponsored health insurance premiums rise 4 percent

Regeneron filed for emergency authorization of its antibody COVID-19 treatment drug, just hours after President Trump claimed it basically cured him. Mitch McConnell hasn’t been to the White House in months, and a new analysis shows Americans’ job-based health care is continually getting more expensive.

We’ll start with Regeneron:

Antibody treatment Trump touts relied on testing with fetal tissue he opposes

But the president’s repeated praise for the antibody cocktail he got when he was first hospitalized nearly a week ago has generated controversy given his clampdown on fetal tissue research at the behest of social conservatives crucial to his political base.

“It’s blatant hypocrisy,” said Lawrence Goldstein, a senior faculty member at the University of California at San Diego, who has used fetal tissue in his research.
“A lot of the opponents [of fetal tissue research] have looked the other way” when it comes to the cell line involved in both the Regeneron therapy and some of the coronavirus vaccines being developed, said Goldstein, who sits on a federal ethics advisory board created over the summer to review whether NIH should give federal grants or contracts toproposals deemed deserving on scientific grounds. The board recommended rejecting all but one of the 14 proposals.

The antibody cocktail for Covid-19 that President Trump touted on Wednesday afternoon was developed with cells originally derived from fetal tissue, a practice that his administration has moved to restrict.

In June 2019, the Trump administration suspended federal funding for most new scientific research involving fetal tissue derived from abortions.

“Promoting the dignity of human life from conception to natural death is one of the very top priorities of President Trump’s administration,” the Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement in 2019, around the time of the ban.

“Intramural research that requires new acquisition of fetal tissue from elective abortions will not be conducted,” the statement added.

Regeneron asks for emergency FDA approval for COVID-19 antibody treatment

October 8, 2020

| Health Article

Oct. 8 (UPI) — Biotechnology company Regeneron has requested emergency use authorization from federal regulators for a COVID-19 antibody treatment.

The REGN-COV2 treatment is a combination of two antibodies that’s designed to “block infectivity” of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19.

“The two potent, virus-neutralizing antibodies that form REGN-COV2 bind non-competitively to the critical receptor binding domain of the virus’s spike protein, which diminishes the ability of mutant viruses to escape treatment and protects against spike variants that have arisen in the human population,” the company said in a statement.

Regeneron, which asked the Food and Drug Administration for the emergency authorization, said it has doses available for 50,000 patients and will have enough for another 300,000 in the coming months.

“If [emergency use authorization] is granted the government has committed to making these doses available to the American people at no cost and would be responsible for their distribution,”

‘You catch it and then you get better:’ Trump claims he would’ve beaten COVID-19 without treatment

October 8, 2020

| Health News

President Trump boasted Thursday that he doesn’t need any help beating coronavirus — and you don’t either.

The COVID-stricken president said he is strong enough to win his fight against the deadly virus without treatment, an ill-informed statement considering that 210,000 Americans have succumbed to the pandemic

“I think I would have done it fine without drugs. You don’t really need drugs,” Trump told Fox News.

“You catch it and then you get better. And then you are immune,” Trump added.

Trump praised the experimental anti-body treatment that he was given last Friday, calling the drug a “cure” for COVID-19.

But he suggested that his own strength was primarily responsible for his ability to fight off the virus so far.

“I view it as a cure because I took it,” Trump said. “It’s great, it made me better, I’ll tell you right now.”

Doctors say that personal strength obviously has

Trump hails virus treatment, says he’s ready to do rallies

October 8, 2020

| Health Article

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Thursday that he is ready to hold campaign rallies and he credited an experimental drug treatment with helping his recovery from COVID-19, although there is no way for the president or his doctors to know whether the drug had any effect.

“I’m feeling good. Really good. I think perfect,” Trump said during a telephone interview with Fox Business Channel, his first since he tested positive.

“I think I’m better to the point where I’d love to do a rally tonight,” Trump said adding that he no longer thinks he’s “contagious at all.”

Trump did not indicate where or when he might have contracted the virus, saying only, “If you’re anywhere around this thing you can catch it.” But he mentioned a recent Rose Garden event announcing his new Supreme Court nominee and a meeting with military families. He said family members often want

5 Questions: Kari Nadeau on advances in food allergy prevention and treatment | News Center

October 8, 2020

| Health Food

Our mantra now is “through the skin, allergies begin; through the diet, allergies stay quiet.” Food proteins that enter the body through breaks in the skin — such as if a baby has eczema — can trigger allergies, whereas new foods entering the gut at the right time, when solid foods are introduced, can help the body see them as safe.

Stanford patented a powdered food product that can be mixed with baby food, which exposes babies to a wide variety of food proteins to help prevent allergies. It’s now commercially available and being distributed globally.

3.  Your research has focused on using oral immunotherapy to treat food allergies. What are the big milestones in that work?

Nadeau: Oral immunotherapy had been around since the early 1900s. Patients get tiny, gradually escalating amounts of the food protein that triggers their allergy, under a doctor’s supervision. For instance, if you have

BEIJING (Reuters) – China’s Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical Group said on Thursday an experimental antibody treatment for COVID-19 being developed by its unit had been approved for human testing in the United States and the trial was expected to start soon.

Several drugmakers are testing antibody treatments for COVID-19 to help patients’ immune systems fight the coronavirus that causes the disease which has killed over 1 million people worldwide.

Health experts say such antibody treatments could be used as a therapeutic bridge until vaccines become widely available.

Fosun said its unit, Hengenix Biotech Inc, planned to start an early stage clinical trial in the United States “in the near future after conditions are ready.”

Hengenix’s HLX70, a monoclonal neutralising antibody treatment, has obtained a clinical trial approval from U.S.

When Stephen Smith was a sophomore in college, he started having anxious thoughts about his relationship with his girlfriend. Pretty soon he started worrying about other things, to the point where he couldn’t focus on anything else. Over and over again, as he tried to study or go to football practice, he couldn’t—these pernicious thoughts kept coming back, laden with a fear that something terrible was going to happen.

Smith spent months trying to find answers about what was going on in his mind, just so he could get his life back. He saw five different doctors. He got five misdiagnoses. He got five treatments for the wrong thing. He ended up spiraling so badly, he says, that he had to drop out of college and move home. One day, while searching his symptoms online, he came across other people with similar

Regeneron requests EUA from the FDA for coronavirus treatment

October 8, 2020

| Health

Regeneron’s stock price rose over 4% in premarket trading Thursday after the company submitted an “emergency use authorization” request to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its Covid-19 antibody treatment.

Its REGN-COV2 monoclonal antibody coronavirus therapy is what President Donald Trump took last week after being diagnosed with Covid-19. He has since described it as a “cure” even though there’s no such scientific proof.

The biotech company published a statement Wednesday noting that “if an EUA is granted the  government has committed to making these doses available to the American people at no cost and would be responsible for their distribution.”

The treatment is now available for about 50,000 patients, Regeneron said, “and we expect to have doses available for 300,000 patients in total within the next few months.”

REGN-COV2 is a combination of two monoclonal antibodies and was “designed specifically to block infectivity” of the virus that causes
