Oct. 13 (UPI) — The national death toll from COVID-19 has surpassed 215,000, according to updated figures Tuesday from research at Johns Hopkins University.

The data showed about 215,100 coronavirus deaths and an addition of about 41,700 cases nationwide on Monday. The figure is a decrease from about 44,600 cases a day earlier, which followed four straight days over 50,000.

There were an additional 300 deaths on Monday, according to the data, which also showed a total of 7.8 million cases nationwide since the start of the pandemic.

The data came on the same day researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University said U.S. deaths during the first five months of the health crisis may have been undercounted by as many as 75,000.

Over the past week, new cases nationwide have averaged almost 50,000 — a substantial increase over the previous week.

The worldwide death toll from the coronavirus eclipsed 1 million on Tuesday, nine months into a crisis that has devastated the global economy, tested world leaders’ resolve, pitted science against politics and forced multitudes to change the way they live, learn and work.

“It’s not just a number. It’s human beings. It’s people we love,” said Dr Howard Markel, a professor of medical history at the University of Michigan who has advised government officials on containing pandemics and lost his 84-year-old mother to Covid-19 in February.

“It’s our brothers, our sisters. It’s people we know,” he added. “And if you don’t have that human factor right in your face, it’s very easy to make it abstract.”

Health care key for Sandhu

Health care is at the top of the priority list for Vernon-Monashee NDP candidate Harwinder Sandhu.

The nurse at Vernon Jubilee Hospital won the party nomination Monday.

She says running in the provincial election is a natural extension of the work she does at VJH.

“When deciding to run, I had to ask myself, do I try to improve health care by working at the hospital or should I go to Victoria to join John Horgan’s government and work for better health care for all British Columbians?” said Sandhu.

“As a patient care co-ordinator in one of the COVID wards at the hospital, I am well aware that the BC NDP government has earned top marks for how it handled the pandemic,” she said. “I’m eager to join the team to do my part.”

Coronavirus live updates: India’s case count tops 6 million

India’s case count is expected to surpass that of the U.S. within weeks.

Last Updated: September 28, 2020, 4:55 AM ET

A pandemic of the novel coronavirus has now killed more than 997,000 people worldwide.

Over 33.1 million people across the globe have been diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the new respiratory virus, according to data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. The criteria for diagnosis — through clinical means or a lab test — has varied from country-to-country. Still, the actual numbers are believed to be much higher due to testing shortages, many unreported cases and suspicions that some national governments are hiding or downplaying the scope of their outbreaks.

Since the first cases were detected in China in December, the virus has rapidly spread to every continent except Antarctica.

SAN DIEGO, CA – San Diego State University has reported 1,072 coronavirus cases in just over one month. The university reported 25 additional cases Sunday.

The new totals reported by Student Health Services reflect numbers as of 6 p.m. Saturday.

The news comes a day after Cal State Long Beach reported a potential spike in cases after five students living on campus tested positive. All student residents at CSULB were placed into quarantine Saturday and will all be tested to figure out how widespread the issue is.

Of the students living on campus, 385 have tested positive and students living off campus totaled 666 positive cases, health services said. A total of eight faculty or staff members have tested positive and 13 “visitors,” people who have had exposure with an SDSU-affiliated individual, have tested positive.

The number of confirmed cases was 1,030, with 42 probable cases.

The information is based
