Texas boy’s brain-eating amoeba death leads city to flush water system

A local official in Texas said it will take 60 days to flush out and ensure a drinking water system is safe to use after a 6-year-old boy died from what doctors determined was a brain-eating amoeba, while others pushed back on the notion that the water authority was in some way tied to his death.

“The Brazosport Water Authority was never an issue with Josiah’s passing or an issue of water quality,” Rep. Dennis Bonnen, Texas Speaker of the House, said on Monday, Fox 26 reported.

His sentiments echo a news release posted on Saturday by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality that there is no safety issue with the Brazosport Water Authority distribution system, which had initially issued a do not use advisory for 11 cities. The advisory was lifted

An investigation into a 6-year-old boy’s death led to the detection of a brain-eating amoeba in a Houston-area city’s water supply, health officials confirmed this weekend. CBS affiliate KHOU-TV reported Josiah McIntyre was hospitalized earlier this month after contracting naegleria fowleri at either the Lake Jackson splashpad or a hose at his family’s home.

6-year-old Josiah died on Sept. 8 after being infected with a brain-eating amoeba. His death prompted @LakeJacksonTX to test the water. CDC preliminary results came back yesterday. 3 of 11 samples were positive: a downtown splash pad, his home’s hose bib and a hydrant. #khou11 https://t.co/rggdGw8LDh pic.twitter.com/iylTXpFc3C

‘Brain-eating’ amoeba in Texas city’s water supply kills 6-year-old

September 28, 2020

| Health Article

A “brain-eating” amoeba has been found in the water supply of a Texas city where a 6-year-old boy recently died from an infection with the organism, according to news reports.

The boy, Josiah McIntyre, who lived in Lake Jackson, a city near Houston, Texas, died on Sept. 8 of a rare infection with the amoeba, known as Naegleria fowleri, according to NBC News. Naegleria fowleri is naturally found in warm freshwater, such as lakes and rivers, and people usually become infected after swimming or diving in bodies of contaminated freshwater, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Infections, which are rare, happen when contaminated water goes up the nose — you cannot become infected from swallowing contaminated water, the CDC says.

Josiah’s family said he may have been exposed to Naegleria fowleri from either their home’s water hose, or a city “splash pad,” where

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – On Sept. 24, the Texas Department of State Health Services reported the district-by-district data on COVID-19 infections collected by the Texas Education Agency.

DSHS released a statement on the website detailing the issues.

That same day, DSHS withdrew the data, citing “issues.”

Within a few days, a statement was added to the dashboard, acknowledging that nearly 500 cases from Texas public schools had not been initially reported on the website. These cases, the statement says, had been reported to the state by the districts, but because of issues with data integration, had been “inadvertently omitted” from the cumulative total.

Now, the cumulative data has been corrected, and DSHS’s statement promises the corrected district-by-district data on Sept. 28, posted here.

The full statement on the DSHS TEA dashboard is below.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration for Brazoria County Sunday after Naeglera fowleri, a potentially deadly amoeba, was found in the city of Lake Jackson’s water supply.

Authorities said the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was working alongside officials with the city of Lake Jackson, the Texas Division of Emergency Management, the Texas Department of State Health Services, the Centers for Disease Control, and the Environmental Protection Agency to resolve the issue.

Texas authorities initially alerted residents to the threat by sending an urgent message about brain-eating amoeba found in the southeast county’s water’ supply.

A “Do Not Use” water advisory was issued for Lake Jackson, Freeport, Angleton, Brazoria, Richwood, Oyster Creek, Clute, Rosenberg, Dow Chemical, TDCJ Clemens

LAKE JACKSON, Texas (AP) — Environmental officials in Texas have lifted a warning for a final Houston-area community to stop using tap water because it might be tainted with a deadly brain-eating microbe, but with a warning that the water should be boiled before being consumed.

Texas withdraws data on school infections, citing “issues”

September 27, 2020

Editor’s note: After this story was published, the Texas Department of State Health Services removed the data from its website, citing “issues” with the numbers. The agency says it will post new data on Monday, Sept. 28 after consulting with the Texas Education Agency. This story will be updated to reflect any changes.

The vast majority of known coronavirus cases among Texas public school students who have returned to classrooms in person this school year were found in older students, new state data released Thursday shows.

According to the data, which includes self-reported, test-confirmed cases from hundreds of school districts across the state, 69% of infected students were in grades seven through 12, while just 15% were in grades four through six and 16% in grade three or lower. Experts say that split makes sense, since there is some evidence that older students are more likely to be symptomatic and

September 27, 2020

Coronavirus isn’t the only illness the people of Brazoria County in Texas have to worry about any longer after a brain-eating Amoeba was found in the water supply for a southeastern portion of the state that is comprised of thousands of residents.

In a Tweet Friday, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality released a statement that the Brazosport Water Authority had issued a do not use advisory in the areas of Lake Jackson, Freeport, Angleton, Brazoria, Richwood, Oyster Creek, Clute, Rosenberg, Dow Chemical, TDCJ Clemens & TDCJ Wayne Scott after Naegleria Fowleri was potentially found in the water supply.

The advisory for those areas meant that customers should not use the water for drinking, bathing or cooking and should only use it for flushing toilets.

According to the CDC, Naegleria fowleri is an amoeba that contaminates water and effects people when that water enters the body through the nose. From
