‘Un-Gala’ for mental health to feature actor Sean Astin – News – telegram.com

| Health Education

WORCESTER – The affable sounding Sean Astin is known for his roles of resilience and everyday heroism, such as Samwise Gamgee in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, Mikey Walsh in “The Goonies,” the title character in “Rudy,” and Bob Newby in Netflix’s “Stranger Things.”

He is also an active advocate for mental health education and for ending the stigma of mental illness. Asked why he became involved in the cause of increasing mental health awareness, Astin had a two-word response: “My mother.”

Patty Duke (1946-2016) was a beloved actress who won an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and three Primetime Emmy Awards. She was also “really one of the first celebrity types to talk about bipolar disorder, or manic depression as it was known at that time,” Astin said.

“We watched her devote the second part of her life to advocacy, doing shows, speaking to Congress,” he said.

Politics and the City: Board of Health ‘dysfunction’ gives some councilors pause – News – telegram.com

| Dept Of Health

One of the first major recommendations made by City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. when he became Worcester’s chief executive in 2014, was to reorganize the city’s public health functions and change the Board of Health from an advisory board to a regulatory one.

It gave the board the power to deal with all local public health issues, effectively cutting the City Council out of the equation.

The move was hailed by its supporters because they said it would remove the politics that had prevented the city from effectively addressing public health issues in the past.

Since the Board of Health was reconstituted and given greater powers, it has indeed done many good things and taken on many difficult public health issues. What made the board so effective was that its members worked so well together and with public health officials.

But that has all changed in recent months.

Worcester’s Kennedy Community Health set ‘to meet moment’ – News – telegram.com

WORCESTER — Stephen Kerrigan embraces challenges.

Kerrigan became president and CEO of the Edward M. Kennedy Community Health Center in July 2019, and since then, and especially over the last seven months, the center has faced challenges, obstacles and changes, but also taken pride in the way it has continued to provide quality health care to its 29,000 patients throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

“Has the last year had some challenges?” Kerrigan, who grew up in Lancaster and graduated from St. John’s High in 1989, said. “Sure, but as I say all the time to folks, ‘Challenges are just opportunities to do things a little differently.’”

In the United States, 1,400 community health centers provide affordable care for almost 30 million people at 12,000 sites. In Massachusetts, more than 1 million residents rely on community health centers as their primary care providers. The Kennedy Community Health Center, which was founded as

Worcester health officials work to ward off ‘twindemic’ – News – telegram.com

WORCESTER — The line snaked around the first parking lot and back into a second outside Community Healthlink on Thursday, and Wakana Gates was unsure she had enough time during her lunch break to wait for a COVID-19 test.

“I don’t want to hurt anyone,” Gates said as she debated joining the line.

Gates explained she tested weekly for the virus to ensure she would keep her children safe. So far, she had not tested positive.

But COVID-19 wasn’t the only virus on Gates’ mind: flu season is just around the corner.

And Gates noted the viruses’ similar symptoms complicate diagnosis, that a weakened immunity from one virus made it more likely to pick up the other or exacerbate symptoms, and that the two viruses were airborne.

“It’s very scary,” Gates said.

She is not the only one concerned.

Amid a steadily increasing number of COVID-19 cases in Worcester and

Backstage Gym is in forefront of Lancaster fitness – The Item – telegram.com

LANCASTER – Unique to the area, Lancaster has a residents-only gym that is free of charge to use, called the Backstage Gym. It is located in the center of town, inside the Lancaster Community Center – unsurprisingly, on the stage – and has recently reopened after its forced closure due to the pandemic.

“The gym is a cooperative venture of the Friends of Lancaster Seniors and the town of Lancaster,” said Alix Turner, director of both the Community Center and the Council on Aging.

The town supplies the space, insurance and equipment maintenance as well as town employees like facilities workers (and Turner) to help keep the gym running. The Friends finance the project, donating the fitness equipment and supplies to the town, at a cost of $8,000 and counting. According to Turner, the Friends also provide “the many volunteers who make the place hum.”

The Backstage Gym opened in

Raymond V. Mariano: I wish you good health, Mr. President – News – telegram.com

| Good Health

I was up very early, stumbling around the living room when I opened up my computer to read the day’s headlines. When I read that President Trump and the First Lady Melania Trump had tested positive for COVID-19, I thought that my sleepy eyes were confused.

I started switching news sources convinced that I would find nothing to verify what I thought I had read.

The night before, I had seen that Hope Hicks had tested positive for this deadly disease. I knew that she was with the president a few times this week, even traveling in relatively close quarters on Marine One — the helicopter that they both flew in on Wednesday.

As much as I despise all of the things Trump has done while president, I never wished for this. And reading it on my computer screen seemed surreal.

I know he almost never wore a mask and

The annual Art in the City fundraiser for Family Health Center of Worcester is a little different this year. With help from the Skinner Auction House, Family Health Center began an online auction Sept. 22 featuring the original works of 61 New England artists, all to benefit the center’s mission to offer access to quality health care to low-income and uninsured patients. Bids are being accepted until 6 p.m. Sept. 25 at https://www.skinnerinc.com/auctions/1235T.

The public is invited to join a live-streaming event to celebrate Art in the City, hosted by Jen Carter of WXLO, at 7 to 7:45 p.m. Sept. 24 at https://zoom.us/j/95862089152.

“Funds raised through the Art in the City auction will directly support comprehensive health services for 35,000 low-income residents of Worcester and South Worcester County,” said Lou Brady, president
