RRMC Health Talk: Thinking about flu shots | Weekend Magazine

October 10, 2020

| Health Magazine

During this flu season, it is more important than ever to do your part to help protect you and those around you from this deadly illness. The flu season in our region typically begins at the end of October and lasts through April. The sooner you get your flu shot, the better you will be prepared for it. This is even more concerning given the combination of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and a busy flu season. This combination could easily overwhelm the health care system.

The hallmark of the flu is sudden onset and intense muscle aches, which is not typically the case with COVID-19 or other respiratory illnesses. While COVID-19 has a similar set of symptoms, some patients experience a rapid deterioration from a respiratory perspective which is less

The president is sick. Why is TV news booking pro-Trump pundits and campaigners to talk about it?

| Health Center

“Steve, respectfully, I would like to be asking this of a White House official, but they’re not putting anyone out this morning for us to question, so I’ve got to ask you,” Wallace said. “How is the president doing?”

In TV appearances Sunday and Monday, Trump campaign surrogates served double duty as cheerleaders for the president and official communicators of his closely guarded health condition, before Trump’s dramatic exit from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, frustrating network anchors who wanted officials who were less political.

Before appearing on TV as a campaign talking head, Cortes was best known for his role as a so-called pro-Trump contributor on CNN, paid to come on the air and defend the president on the issue of the day. Cortes told Wallace on Sunday that Trump “is a fighter in every sense of the word” and “very, very shortly, he is going to be

Why Entrepreneurs Need To Talk About Their Mental Health

October 4, 2020

| Health Facts

Person trapped in bag

Christian Newman

72% of entrepreneurs are directly or indirectly affected by mental health issues compared to just 48% of non entrepreneurs. That’s according to a study by the National Institute of Mental Health. 49% of entrepreneurs deal with mental health issues directly while only 32% of others experienced them. Similarly, 23% of entrepreneurs have family members who face these issues compared to just 16% of others with family members who face these same types of issues.

I’ve been an entrepreneur now for almost a decade (9 years and counting). I’m just one of 500 million entrepreneurs; we make up about eight percent of the global population, amazingly. As a category – we are exponentially more likely to suffer from mental health problems, and yet, people don’t talk about that enough – it is fetishised and glamourised, so here’s an attempt to share some data and personal experience to show the

RRMC Health Talk: ‘What did you say?’: Masks and hearing | Weekend Magazine

October 3, 2020

| Health Magazine

A lot of people these days may find themselves having a harder time talking with each other.

Our ability to communicate has certainly suffered with the need to wear face masks in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Until the pandemic is over, it looks like face masks and coverings are here to stay.

Although we hear with our ears, we use facial expressions and lip reading to understand what is being said. These important visual cues are now obstructed with face masks which makes communication more difficult and sometimes frustrating. Furthermore, personal protective equipment such as face masks and face shields block sound. These barriers can bring the volume down to a level as if you are wearing ear plugs. When you add this handicap to the missing visual cues, it is no wonder we are straining to hear and understand each other.

The overall impact is even more significant
