Different Takes: Lessons On Guarding Information About The President’s Health; Reckless Leaders Cost Lives

Guarding The President’s Privacy Is Key For A White House Physician

Before deciding to take a photogenic, early-evening helicopter ride from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center back to the White House, President Trump toyed with an even more dramatic idea. He discussed wearing a Superman T-shirt under his dress clothes, coming out of the hospital looking exhausted, and then tearing off his outer shirt to reveal himself as the ever-strong Superman. Made-for-tweeting publicity stunts that are rejected can still teach us something: In this case, it is about the power of costumes and the narratives they bring with them. (George J. Annas, 10/14)

Cancer takes heavy toll on women’s work, finances, study shows

Young women with cancer are at a high risk for employment and financial consequences, a new study finds.

“Our study addresses the burden of employment disruption and financial hardship among young women with cancer — a group who may be at particular risk for poor financial outcomes after cancer given their age and gender,” said researcher Clare Meernik, a fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

She and her colleagues surveyed more than 1,300 women in North Carolina and California a median of seven years after diagnosis. Their cancer was diagnosed when they were 15 to 39 years of age and working.

Following their diagnosis, 32% of the women had to stop working or cut back on their hours. Twenty-seven percent said they had to borrow money, go into debt or file for bankruptcy because of cancer treatment.

Women with disrupted employment were

Health Coverage Takes Big Hit With Pandemic-Related Job Cuts | Health News

By Robert Preidt, HealthDay Reporter

(HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Oct. 13, 2020 (HealthDay News) — Up to 7.7 million U.S. workers lost jobs with employer-sponsored health insurance during the coronavirus pandemic, and 6.9 million of their dependents also lost coverage, a new study finds.

Workers in manufacturing, retail, accommodation and food services were especially hard-hit by job losses, but unequally impacted by losses in insurance coverage.

Manufacturing accounted for 12% of unemployed workers in June. But because the sector has one of the highest rates of employer-sponsored coverage at 66%, it accounted for a bigger loss of jobs with insurance (18%) and 19% of potential coverage loss when dependents are included.

Nearly 3.3 million workers in accommodation and food services had lost their jobs as of June — 30% of the industry’s workforce. But only 25% of workers in the sector had employer-sponsored insurance before the pandemic. Seven percent lost jobs with

Hauff takes over as CEO of Yakima Neighborhood Health Services | Local

Many of the buildings of Yakima Neighborhood Health Services are named after the organization’s figures.

The entire east Yakima campus of the community health center is named after Anita Monoian, who retired as CEO last month after more than four decades.

The Hinman building on East Yakima Avenue, which once housed a financial firm, is named after Don Hinman, a founding board member and current chair of the board of directors.

Yet another building named after a critical figure at Neighborhood Health: The Rhonda D. Hauff Resource Center. Once a market, the center at 201 S. Sixth St. provides temporary housing for the homeless and provides case managers to connect the homeless to services, including health care, long-term housing and employment.

With Hauff’s initiative, Neighborhood Health has been expanding its services for the homeless population for the last 13 years.

Earlier this month, Hauff, who had served as deputy CEO,

Fallbrook health professional takes on Marie Waldron in 75th Assembly District race

Health care worker Kate Schwartz is facing Republican incumbent Marie Waldron in the 75th Assembly District contest, and the two candidates disagree on several key issues confronting constituents.

Schwartz, a Fallbrook Democrat, is a director on the Fallbrook Regional Health District board and has been a licensed behavioral health care provider for more than three decades.

She said she’s eager to bring her experience in the health care industry to Sacramento and to help residents of the 75th Assembly District battle through the coronavirus pandemic, which has sickened nearly 50,000 people and killed more than 800 countywide.

“I’ve spent my entire career working to assist people experiencing mental health illnesses and crises,” Schwartz said in a phone interview. “And of course, working on the community level, I see the inherent, systemic problems with our health care system and want to help to fix it.”

Waldron, of Escondido, is a four-term

Schafer: Debut novel by Rochester author takes on big pharma issues

October 8, 2020

| Health Issues

The question put to Rochester author Paul John Scott about his new novel was simple: Can it be this bad in the real world?

Scott, a veteran health and science writer, has written his first novel. Called “Malcharist,” it is a completely made-up story about a potentially dangerous drug being put on the market — with outsourced drug trial research, ghostwritten studies, lack of access to raw drug-trial data, and doctors essentially paid to champion new drugs.

It is fiction, right?

“As far as I know the basic mechanisms depicted in this … are all still humming along,” he said this week in an e-mail exchange. “But the book is indeed a heightened convergence of those practices for sure.”

Scott’s novel is the first published by Samizdat Health Writer’s Cooperative, a Canadian publisher addressing the broad category of health information. This publisher clearly thinks Scott has created a story grounded

San Antonio Metro Health sees another leadership shakeup; Bridger takes on coronavirus czar role

October 7, 2020

| Community Health

The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District is seeing another leadership shakeup, as Assistant City Manager Colleen Bridger relinquishes control of the district’s day-to-day operations to take on the role of what’s essentially a coronavirus czar.

Bridger will retain the title of interim Metro Health director, which she has held since Dawn Emerick abruptly resigned the position in June, but will be responsible specifically for the city’s public health response to the virus.

Dr. Sandra Guerra, previously Metro Health’s assistant medical director, has been named interim deputy public health director and will take charge of all other operations.

“The City Council and the community asked us to prioritize public health services in this year’s budget,” said City Manager Erik Walsh, who made the changes and advised Mayor Ron Nirenberg and council members in a memo Tuesday. “Dr. Guerra will provide additional leadership to carry out these vital services.

“This will allow

Thousands of masks, face shields and safety goggles. Hundreds of bottles of hand sanitizer and soap, syringes, sutures, gloves and burn dressings. Dozens of procedure gowns and tourniquet kits. Four EMT gurneys. Two AESOP robotic surgical arm units. Two arthroscopic carts. Two Site Rite mobile ultrasound machines and one diagnostic ultrasound machine. These are just some of the items found in the 13 pallets of medical supplies and personal protective equipment UCLA Health recently shipped to Beirut, Lebanon, to aid those still in need two months after a tragic explosion devastated the city.

“The fact that we are sending this substantial donation of medical supplies is absolutely remarkable,” said Dr. Neveen El-Farra, professor of clinical medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and one of the chief organizers of the humanitarian effort. “It exemplifies UCLA Health’s commitment to the global community. It aligns with our vision of

Trump takes a brief car ride, ignoring own COVID infection

October 5, 2020

| Health News

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — Infected and contagious, President Donald Trump briefly ventured out in a motorcade on Sunday to salute cheering supporters, a move that disregarded precautions meant to contain the deadly virus that has forced his hospitalization and killed more than 209,000 Americans.

Hours earlier, Trump’s medical team reported that his blood oxygen level dropped suddenly twice in recent days and that they gave him a steroid typically only recommended for the very sick. Still, the doctors said Trump’s health is improving and that he could be discharged as early as Monday.

With one month until Election Day, Trump was eager to project strength despite his illness. The still-infectious president surprised supporters who had gathered outside Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, driving by in a black SUV with the windows rolled up. Secret Service agents inside the vehicle could be seen in masks and other protective gear.
