MS. WINFIELD CUNNINGHAM: Good afternoon. I’m Paige Winfield Cunningham, a health policy reporter here at The Washington Post and author of the Health 202 Newsletter, and this afternoon, I’m delighted to welcome our first guest, Dr. Eric Topol, who is founder and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute and the executive vice president of Scripps Research.

Welcome to Washington Post Live, Dr. Topol.

DR. TOPOL: Thanks, Paige. It’s great to be with you.

MS. WINFIELD CUNNINGHAM: I want to start off, of course, by talking about the search for a vaccine which is something I know a lot of our viewers are paying attention to. We saw this controversy over the stricter standards that the FDA was considering for granting emergency use authorization, and last week, the White House signed off on those standards after the president had indicated he thought they were politically motivated.

Health systems, govt responses linked to virus tolls

BERLIN (AP) — Scientists say a comparison of 21 developed countries during the start of the coronavirus pandemic shows that those with early lockdowns and well-prepared national health systems avoided large numbers of additional deaths due to the outbreak.

In a study published Wednesday by the journal Nature Medicine, researchers used the number of weekly deaths in 19 European countries, New Zealand and Australia over the past decade to estimate how many people would have died from mid-February to May 2020 had the pandemic not happened.

The authors, led by Majid Ezzati of Imperial College London, then compared the predicted number of deaths to the actual reported figure during that period to determine how many likely occurred due to the pandemic. Such models of ‘excess mortality’ are commonly used by public health officials to better understand disease outbreaks and the effectiveness of counter-measures.

The study found there were about 206,000

2020 Global Hunger Index: One decade to zero hunger linking health and sustainable food systems – World

October 12, 2020
| Global Health

What do we know about the hunger situation worldwide? Has progress been made or are there any setbacks? Using the Global Hunger Index, the global hunger situation can be calculated and assessed.

The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a tool designed to comprehensively measure and track hunger and undernutrition at global, regional, and national levels. It is designed to raise awareness and understanding of the fight against hunger, and call attention to those areas of the world where hunger levels are highest and where the need for additional efforts to eliminate hunger is greatest.

Global Hunger Index 2020: Progress and Setbacks

The 2020 GHI shows that while the world has made gradual progress in reducing hunger on a global scale since 2000, this progress has been too slow. Hunger persists in many countries, and in some instances, progress is even being reversed. The global level of hunger and undernutrition is

| Health Plans

Hospital officials are not sounding the alarm, however.

Dr. Cliff Robertson, CHI Health’s chief executive, said Thursday that if needed, his health system has the ability to nearly double its capacity to 2,000 beds. Robertson said CHI Health hospitals also could increase the number of intensive care beds by using post-op recovery rooms and operating rooms.

“As a health system, we still have plenty of capacity,” he said.

Officials with Methodist Health System said they have plans in place for potential patient surges related to COVID-19.

“We’re all seeing an uptick in COVID-19 numbers across the communities we serve,” said Steve Goeser, president and CEO of the health system, “and our planning and preparedness continues.”

In an interview with the Associated Press, Cory Shaw, chief operating officer for Nebraska Medicine’s hospital and clinics, said, “Obviously, we’re concerned. But as of right now, we are in a good place in terms

Attorney General William Tong today joined 27 other state attorneys general announcing a settlement with Tennessee-based CHS/Community Health Systems, Inc., and its subsidiary, CHSPSC LLC. This settlement resolves an investigation of a data breach which impacted approximately 6.1 million patients.

Health systems seek out patient feedback to improve telehealth platform

October 10, 2020

| Health Magazine

The pressure is on for health systems to create digital experiences patients will enjoy or risk losing out on revenue. In the digital age, consumers have high expectations of what these platforms should be like. “Systems are no longer just competing with other health systems in their region, they are competing with the experiences people have in their daily lives from other brands—that is the bar,” Kalis said. “When those experiences are cumbersome, that can lead to choosing one provider over another … and in the most extreme case, even switching providers.”

Telehealth’s increased popularity has prompted Stanford Health Care to totally rethink how it is assessing patients’ experience with the platform. The California system now does about 62,000 telehealth visits a month, up from about a 1,000 a month before COVID-19.

Now that volumes have stabilized and are staying strong, Alpa Vyas, vice president for patient experience at Stanford,
