The nation’s top infectious disease expert said the United States faces a “difficult situation” with a rise in positive coronavirus tests through a wide swath of northern states as the weather cools.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the share of positive coronavirus tests is increasing in the Northwest, Midwest and other northern states.

The share of tests that detect the virus is a key indicator of whether the coronavirus is spreading or under control in a community. Public health officials want to see less than 3% of all tests return positive. An ideal rate is less than 1%, Fauci said

As predicted, the US is now grappling with a new Covid-19 surge — one that could overwhelm hospitals, kill thousands of Americans a day by January and leave even young survivors with long-term complications.

The state toll has leapt over the past week and more than 6,500 people have died from the disease there, according to health officials. More than 460,000 people have been infected with the virus in Florida, which has a population of 21 million, and a quarter of the state's cases are in Miami. Positive Virus Tests, Hospitalizations Surge in Colorado | Colorado News

| Health

DENVER (AP) — Colorado is experiencing another surge of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, prompting Gov. Jared Polis to plead Tuesday with residents to wear masks, stay home as much as possible, and maintain social distancing practices.

As of Tuesday, Colorado’s three-day average positivity rate — the percentage of total tests coming in positive — was 5.4%, and the state recorded 1,000 newly confirmed cases both Saturday and Monday, the highest daily numbers recorded during the pandemic, Polis said.

About 290 people were hospitalized for COVID-19 on Tuesday, the highest total since May 31, The Denver Post reported.

During a briefing on the pandemic, Polis didn’t suggest he was contemplating renewed mandatory restrictions on business or other activities to stem the surge. But he insisted: “If this continues, our hospital capacity will be in jeopardy.”

The World Health Organization recommends trying to keep the positivity rate below 5% of all tests.

A 25-year-old Nevada man was the first American confirmed to have caught COVID-19 twice, and his second infection was worse than the first.

USA TODAY

Coronavirus cases are rising in Michigan and COVID-19 hospitalizations have spiked 80% in recent weeks, climbing in all regions of the state, health officials warned Tuesday.

“It is very possible that this is the beginning of a second wave,” said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, the chief medical executive and chief deputy director for health for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

“That is why we are asking everyone to remain vigilant and do these basic things: wearing masks, avoiding the social gatherings. It’s very important.”

Dutch PM Orders ‘Partial Lockdown’ To Halt Coronavirus Surge

October 13, 2020

| Health News

The Netherlands will go into “partial lockdown” to curb one of Europe’s biggest coronavirus surges, with all bars, cafes and restaurants to close, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said Tuesday.

The sale of alcohol and cannabis will also be banned after 8pm (1800 GMT) in a bid to reduce the social contacts that have led to the rise in Covid-19 cases, Rutte said of the steps.

After long refusing to make the wearing of masks compulsory, Rutte finally ordered that non-medical face coverings must also be worn in all indoor spaces by people aged over 13.

“We are going into a partial lockdown. It hurts but it’s the only way, we have to be stricter,” Rutte told a televised press conference.

“If we do all of this, we can quickly return to a more normal life.”

The rules will take effect at 10pm (2000 GMT) Wednesday and will last for

The U.S. may be “facing a whole lot of trouble” as coronavirus cases continue to skyrocket across the country heading into the cold winter months.

On Monday, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, appeared on CNBC, saying the U.S. is “in a bad place” as the colder weather begins to settle across the nation.

“That’s a bad place to be when you’re going into the cooler weather of the fall and the colder weather of the winter,” Fauci said. “We’re in a bad place. Now we’ve got to turn this around.”

Chicago — Coronavirus cases are on the rise in 39 states and only three are seeing fewer cases. Average daily deaths are also rising in 10 states compared to two weeks ago. The Midwest has been especially hard-hit in recent weeks.

With the nation seeing nearly 50,000 new cases a day, public health officials have given an ominous warning.

“We are truly headed into the fall with it covered by a virus disaster on our hands,” said Dr. Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.

The country is seeing roughly twice as many new cases today as it did at the start of April.

“I hope these numbers jolt the American public into a realization it’s on a trajectory of getting worse and worse,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, said.

So is this still the first

Why Global Citizens Should Care

The UN’s Global Goal 2 aims to end hunger and malnutrition globally by 2030. But the COVID-19 pandemic has sparked hunger crises all over the world, including in Britain. It’s critical that we tackle food poverty, especially for children, otherwise it could have devastating impacts in other areas of life too, including health, education, and more. Take action to protect the most vulnerable communities from COVID-19 and its impacts here.

There has been a dramatic increase in the number of children registering for free school meals in the UK, poverty campaigners say, revealing the strain the COVID-19 pandemic is putting on family budgets.

An estimated 900,000 children signed up to the free school meals programme as the new academic year started in September, according to research released by the Food Foundation think tank. They published the data as part of a joint campaign to raise
