As negotiations to pass the next stimulus check amble forward, we can take stock of what we know about how it will be handled, based on the first stimulus check, several previous stimulus proposals and the latest details of a White House-authored stimulus bill.

We’ll go over the top takeaways that will help you to understand what’s happening with stimulus payments right now, including who would qualify, how much money you might expect to receive and the effect on your taxes. This story was recently updated.

1. Negotiations are a roller coaster

Here’s the quick version: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will continue to negotiate through the weekend.

Both sides of the aisle are currently contesting the White House’s $1.8 trillion offer, which arrived Friday and includes another direct payment for up

Community colleges are experiencing existential crises with more stimulus uncertain

October 10, 2020

It’s not clear if U.S. colleges (or anyone) will be receiving getting more stimulus before the end of the year.

And several community college leaders told Yahoo Finance that if they don’t, many of these schools will struggle to survive in the years to come.

“The biggest concern is we’re going to find many institutions that are serving some students with the greatest need or the greatest barriers to persistence and completion may not have the financial viability to continue,” Carrie Welton, director of Policy and Advocacy at the Hope Center, told Yahoo Finance. “We’re actually risking taking those institutions off the table for students altogether. I think that’s probably the greatest restaurant, obviously institutions need to be available for students to be able to attend.”

‘We desperately need help’

The Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) system oversees 17 institutions serving 85,000 students, and CSCU President Mark Ojakian

It appears unemployed workers won’t get another boost in their weekly benefits any time soon, after President Donald Trump pulled officials out of negotiations on a fifth round of coronavirus relief Tuesday.

The move abruptly dashed hopes of a deal on items such as enhanced unemployment benefits after weeks of talks between the White House and top congressional Democrats seemed to be bearing some fruit.

Absent more aid, jobless Americans will be living off their current allotment of benefits from the state or federal government. In some cases, that amounts to just $5 a week.

Even that money will disappear by the end of the year for millions of workers without more legislation — leaving them with no income if they’re unable

Key Facts

Enhanced federal unemployment benefits: Democrats and the White House never agreed on the amount of a new weekly benefit (the $600 a week from the CARES Act expired in July, and Trump’s $300 a week Lost Wage Assistance program has run dry), but they did agree that more federal support is necessary. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)  and Democrats wanted $600 per week, and

FISCAL KNUCKLE-RAPPING. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell delivered a mild rebuke to squabbling Washington lawmakers on Tuesday. While praising the fiscal stimulus as Covid-19 plunged the United States into recession, he effectively said they needed to do more to avoid a “tragic” reversal of progress. Listen up, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Leader Mitch McConnell and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

One way Powell expressed this in Fedspeak was by saying “the risks of policy intervention are still asymmetric.” At least he clarified that, adding the dangers of overdoing stimulus seem smaller than those from providing too little support. It’s a theme echoed the same day by European Central Bank executive board member Philip Lane

NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. stocks closed sharply higher and crude prices surged Monday as renewed optimism surrounding stimulus negotiations and news of President Donald Trump’s health progress helped calm investor anxiety.

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin continued talks toward a bipartisan agreement on a new pandemic relief package. That revived hopes for a new round of stimulus more than two months after emergency unemployment benefits expired for millions of Americans.

“This probably is a bit of a relief rally,” said Chuck Carlson, chief executive officer at Horizon Investment Services in Hammond, Indiana. “Two weeks ago there wasn’t much hope and now there’s a growing consensus that stimulus could pass before the election.”

“That seems to be where the market is leaning right now.”

Trump’s physician, Dr. Sean Conley, announced late in the session that the president has met or exceeded all standard criteria to

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Growing risk appetite helped push U.S. stocks and crude prices higher on Monday as renewed optimism surrounding stimulus negotiations and news of President Donald Trump’s health progress helped calm investor anxiety.

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin continued talks aimed at arriving at a bipartisan agreement on a new pandemic relief package. That revived hopes that a new round of stimulus could be in the offing more than two months after emergency unemployment benefits expired for millions of Americans.

“As long as we hear negotiations are continuing Mnuchin and Pelosi trying to narrow their conditions, the market will think they are making progress and something will happen soon,” said Paul Nolte, portfolio manager at Kingsview Asset Management in Chicago.

While the severity of Trump’s condition remained unclear, he took a brief ride in a presidential motorcade to wave to his supporters, as
