Eating healthy on a budget.
Eating healthy on a budget.

Shana Spence says she’s an “eat-anything” dietitian: she encourages her clients to eat what they actually enjoy. When it comes to food, she says to focus on what nourishes your body, fills you up, and doesn’t break the bank.

Life Kit consulted Spence for advice on how to cut back costs on food while still eating nutritious meals.

Foods labeled “organic” and “non-GMO” are often viewed as the “top shelf” or “name brand” healthy food – and they’re priced that way too. But, there are lots of affordable and wholesome alternatives (hello frozen veggies!).

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A year ago, when Ruth Sacks Marlin — a former lawyer who had been working as a personal trainer for the last 15 years — was invited to IDEA World Convention, touted as the world’s largest personal training conference in Anaheim, Calif., she was excited.

“I was in a cohort with 250 of the biggest names in the fitness industry. The chairperson of that conference talked about her large fitness facility and her virtual training business,” said Marlin, a St. George resident.

However, at the time — well before he coronavirus (COVID-19) caused a global shutdown — Marlin, like all others, didn’t foresee the widespread need for virtual fitness training.

“Last year, I was focused on my [more than] 15-year-old personal training one-on-one, fitness classes, traveling to people’s home, training in three private gyms, and on travel fitness,” she said.

As the election nears, here is a brief breakdown of what Trump has done — and has not done — on some key health issues.

Although the U.S. is an important partner to the WHO, it can be replaced, said David Heymann, an epidemiologist who headed the WHO’s response to SARS in 2003. “Germany has become a very important partner in global health recently and other countries are stepping up as well,” he said shortly after Trump’s announcement.

It’s not just cash that Germany is funneling into global health. It’s also determined to be the voice of reason in shaking up the WHO post-pandemic. A case in point: While Germany and France abandoned talks over an American proposal for reforms at the WHO, they penned their own plan to strengthen the organization.

Pitching for ‘more WHO’

The two nations recently made the pitch for a beefed-up WHO in a blueprint, reported by Reuters last week, that would give the global body more legal powers while boosting mandatory payments from member countries.
