| Health Center

SPRINGFIELD – The number of patients being treated for COVID-19 at Baystate Health hospitals has increased this week, as cases statewide and in the region continue to climb.

Officials reported 15 people confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus are being treated in one of the Baystate medical centers. None of the patients are serious enough to be in the critical care unit. One week ago, there were eight patients admitted who tested positive for COVID-19, officials said.

On Sept. 27 a dozen people were admitted to Baystate Health hospitals with COVID-19.

The number of cases statewide has been increasing this month. There are currently 40 communities listed in the high-risk category which have had an average of at least eight daily cases per 100,000 population in the past two weeks. Included on the list are Springfield, Holyoke, Worcester, Boston and Sunderland, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

Illinois’ positivity rate creeps back up to 4% with latest 2,905 coronavirus infections

Ashlee Rezin Garcia/Sun-Times

Illinois’ average coronavirus testing positivity rate rose to 4% for the first time in a month on Saturday as public health officials announced 2,905 more people have contracted the virus statewide.

The Illinois Department of Public Health also reported 31 more deaths were attributed to COVID-19, raising the state’s death toll to 8,975.

Illinois has recorded some of its highest daily case totals of the entire seven-month pandemic over the last week, due mostly to the fact that more people are being tested per day.

The latest cases were confirmed among 66,256 tests, while on average more than 55,000 tests have been administered daily statewide over the last month — almost triple the testing rate during the worst days of the pandemic in May.

Michigan health department issues order requiring masks, limiting gathering sizes statewide

October 5, 2020

| Health Issues

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Monday issued an emergency public health order requiring masks and limiting gatherings after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s authority to issue orders was struck down by the Supreme Court on Friday.

The governor’s executive orders were thrown into legal limbo last week when the Michigan Supreme Court ruled the laws underpinning her executive orders were unconstitutional. The governor is seeking clarification from the court on whether the order takes effect immediately, arguing it instead starts Oct. 30 under a court rule.

The requirements put in place by MDHHS closely track with the executive orders the governor had put in place, MDHHS Director Robert Gordon said Monday.

The number of persons tested and reported to the Department of Health within the last seven days (between September 27th and October 3rd) is 187,883.  Of these, 23,979 persons were reported yesterday, October 3rd.

There are 8,216 total deaths attributed to COVID-19, an increase of 17 new deaths reported. County-specific information and a statewide map are available on the COVID-19 Data Dashboard.
