New AHA Scientific Statement on Heart Health for LGBTQ Adults

October 9, 2020

| Health

Cardiovascular health should be routinely assessed and addressed in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning (LGBTQ) adults, the American Heart Association (AHA) concludes in a new scientific statement.

“Among the most important takeaways from this scientific statement is the need for healthcare providers in clinical settings to routinely assess sexual orientation and gender identity,” Billy A. Caceres, PhD, RN, chair of the statement writing group, told theheart.org | Medscape Cardiology.

Billy A. Caceres, PhD, RN

“This will help healthcare providers engage LGBTQ patients in discussions about their heart health that account for the unique experiences of this population,” said Caceres, assistant professor, Columbia University School of Nursing, New York.

The statement was published online October 8 in Circulation.

“Invisible” Population

There are roughly 11 million LGBTQ adults in the United States, yet they are often “invisible in healthcare settings and cardiovascular research,” Caceres noted. The AHA scientific statement

by Hans Henri P. Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe

October 2020, Mental Health Europe high-level seminar

2020 will be a year that we remember as one that shook the world and brought many countries to their knees. An unimaginable number of lives and livelihoods have been lost to COVID-19. Families and communities have been forced apart, businesses bankrupted and people deprived of opportunities that a year ago were taken for granted.

However, we have a way forward to create important change. As WHO Regional Director for Europe, I am prioritizing efforts on mental health in three main ways:

  1. Addressing the stigma and misinformation that exacerbate suffering
  2. Bringing mental health care to the community
  3. Reforming policy and increasing investment.

To understand where we need to go, we must first understand where we have been

… and that means examining the toll the pandemic has taken on the mental health and

Statement on Racism as a Public Health Crisis

In June 2020, the Mayor of Boston declared racism as a public health crisis and began implementing strategies to mitigate its damaging effects. Shortly after, the cities of Somerville, Revere, Everett, and Chelsea joined this declaration. In September, amid growing evidence, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey, and Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley challenged the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to acknowledge the role of racism in precipitating the current deep public health crisis.

Bunker Hill Community College joins our municipal and congressional leadership in declaring, in the strongest terms, that racism is a public health crisis. Voices from our campus have raised these concerns and called for immediate solutions to support our Black and brown students and employees. We join efforts across sectors to shape longer-term strategies to dismantle racism and ensure a just and equitable recovery from

September 29, 2020

A statement from Superintendent Gilligan, Town Manager Rodrigues, Director of Health Services Cheryl Barczak and Health Director Brian LaGrasse

Over the past week, Merrimack College has seen a substantial increase in the number of COVID-19 cases on campus. Those cases have all been related to Merrimack College and contact tracing completed by the Town has shown no evidence of community spread due to this cluster.

We have been working directly with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and other state agencies to gather information and get guidance as we navigate this event.

“Through contact tracing, which includes interviews completed with every positive case by our public health nurses, we have determined that the Merrimack cases are currently isolated,” said Brian LaGrasse. “We will continue to monitor all positive cases and public health data to ensure that the cases remain isolated and our community is safe. This is

ACGME Issues Statement on the Executive Order on Race and Sex Stereotyping

PR Newswire

CHICAGO, Sept. 30, 2020

CHICAGO, Sept. 30, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The ACGME today issued a statement on the Presidential Executive Order on Combating Race and Sex Stereotyping. The Order, issued September 22, 2020 seemingly promotes training of employees to create an inclusive environment by avoiding race and sex stereotyping; however, that intent is subverted by defining divisive concepts in a way that turns mechanisms intended to protect into weapons of divisiveness and exclusion. The Executive Order is inconsistent with work done over the past 50 years to advance civil rights of minoritized and thereby marginalized communities in the United States and, through its mandates, risks further division and fostering a culture of enmity. This approach works against the ACGME’s mission to improve both health and health care for patients and communities and ultimately results

| Global Health

SEATTLE, Sept. 30, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The death toll from COVID-19 passed one million this week. It is a sobering moment. But there is cause for optimism as recent days have seen a significant surge in momentum around global cooperation, which is our greatest strength when it comes to consigning this pandemic to the history books.

This is a shared global crisis that demands a shared global response. The only way to fully protect one nation is to protect every nation. And countries and companies are stepping up in unprecedented ways to make sure that the tools to fight this disease are available, affordable, and accessible to everyone who needs them.

The Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator is the best shot we have for this. Created just five months ago, this collaboration is already delivering incredible results. A ground-breaking agreement announced on Monday will provide 120 million rapid

Statement from the Press Secretary Regarding the Global Health Security Agenda Annual Report

September 29, 2020

| Global Health

President Donald J. Trump has no greater priority than the health and safety of the American people.  In today’s interconnected world, we must work to ensure health security across the globe to protect Americans.

The White House has released the annual report, “Strengthening Health Security Across the Globe: Progress and Impact of United States Government Investments in the Global Health Security Agenda,” which highlights contributions the United States has made as the global health leader to improve the capacity of our international partners to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease outbreaks.

While this report covers progress during the period before the COVID-19 pandemic, global health security is undeniably more important now than ever.  The pandemic has demonstrated that an infectious disease threat anywhere can be an infectious disease threat everywhere.

This year’s report details the results and progress achieved through United States investments in global health security, including financial
