The International Vaccine Institute (IVI) hosted a virtual State Forum today to advocate for multilateral cooperation through vaccine diplomacy. During a coronavirus pandemic with the continuous threat of more neglected infectious diseases spreading around the world, the forum convened a panel of country ambassadors and vaccine experts to promote partnership and equity in global health.

“Our coming together today is visible evidence of the kind of solidarity that will end this pandemic, prevent the next one, and control and eradicate more neglected diseases that disproportionately affect low- and middle-income countries,” said George Bickerstaff, Chair of IVI’s Board of Trustees, in his welcome.

The forum was livestreamed online from IVI headquarters in , Korea and featured remarks from First Lady Kim Jung-sook of the Republic of Korea and Queen Sylvia of Sweden, as well as ambassadors from the Republic of Korea, Sweden, India,

Colorado in “third wave” of COVID-19 as hospitalizations reach highest level since May, state health director says

October 13, 2020

| Dept Of Health

More Colorado residents are in the hospital for COVID-19 than at any point since late May, as hospitalizations surged past the peak of the state’s summer spike.

As of Monday, 288 people were hospitalized with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Colorado. The last time more patients were receiving hospital-level care for the virus was May 31, when the spring wave of the new coronavirus was receding.

Cases also took a turn upward last week after falling slightly the previous week. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reported 4,979 cases in the week ending Sunday, which is about 900 cases more than the state saw during the single-biggest week of the July surge.

The state did perform more tests last week than in late July, but the increasing rate of tests coming back positive indicates that’s not the only reason the number of cases is growing. About 4.5% of

On Tuesday, the district replaced its online dashboard that tracked positive cases in the public school system with a link to a Florida Department of Health report. The data lists out COVID-19 cases tied to public and private schools,

Protecting educators and health care workers through strategic state stockpiles

October 12, 2020

| Health Benefits

As of this writing, 922 U.S. health care workers have died fighting COVID-19, with nearly one-third lacking adequate amounts of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the initial months of the disease’s outbreak. In those early months, global supply chain issues and the rapid depletion of Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) resources illustrated serious gaps in America’s pandemic preparedness. Today, we continue to feel the ramifications as parents, educators and students face an uncertain return to the classroom.

In the future, these shortages could be avoided through the creation of something similar to the SNS: Strategic State Stockpiles.

States need to play a larger role in pandemic preparedness to “fill the gap” if, and when, the federal government is unable to do so. They can build independent emergency medical stockpiles mirroring the SNS, but with an emphasis on low-cost, high-yield items such as PPE and portable ventilators. This would allow states to

Mississippi State Department of Health launches school district COVID-19 data | News

October 12, 2020

| Dept Of Health

Like most other districts throughout Mississippi, all four public school districts serving Monroe County students have witnessed positive COVID-19 cases, leading to quarantines of those who have been in close contact.

While the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) has reported data on its website since late August about how many school-related cases there are for each county, it began reporting numbers last week specific to each school in the state.

The K-12 reports of COVID-19 school cases, outbreaks and exposure link gives a county-by-county breakdown with data for each individual school. Weekly information includes total numbers pertaining to faculty and staff and students who tested positive for COVID-19, the total number of those on quarantine due to exposure and the number of outbreaks since the beginning of the school year.

As preventative measures against COVID-19, students arriving at school daily have their temperatures checked and hand sanitizer applied before

Since the coronavirus pandemic started, the United States has recorded more than 7.6 million cases of COVID-19 and 213,000 deaths.

USA TODAY

Coronavirus hospitalizations were continuing a dangerous trend in the United States while Brazil and India each reached ominous milestones as the global pandemic showed little sign of retreat Sunday.

Hospitalizations, which peaked at nearly 60,000 across the nation in July, had fallen by more than half last month. But since dipping below 29,000 on Sept. 20, the number of people being treated in hospitals each day has crept higher, to almost 35,000.

And a USA TODAY analysis of Johns Hopkins data through late Saturday shows 11 states set records for new cases for a seven-day period – Alaska, Colorado, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota and Utah. The U.S. has recorded its fourth consecutive day of more than 50,000 new COVID-19 cases,

GOP Get Out the Vote tour

Candidate for governor Greg Gianforte speaks as volunteers and others gather in the parking lot in front of the Montana GOP office in Billings on a stop in the “Get Out the Vote” tour Thursday.

CASEY PAGE, Billings Gazette

A group of roughly 100 health professionals has sent an open letter to Republican gubernatorial candidate Greg Gianforte chiding him over various actions regarding COVID-19 precautions.

In response, Gianforte’s campaign said the letter was an attempt to politicize public health.

The letter was sent Friday to Lee Montana Newspapers and included 111 names of nurses, doctors, caregivers and public health professionals.

It criticized Gianforte, the state’s current U.S. House representative, for three instances.

First, he appeared at a Lewis and Clark County event Oct. 3 that the health department said violated COVID-19 restrictions. Citations were expected.

Second, he arrived at an Oct. 6 gubernatorial event without a face mask. The letter

Testing positive: New York has among lowest state rates of new COVID-19 cases

October 11, 2020

| Health Article

New York continues to have one of the nation’s lowest rates of people testing positive for the coronavirus, but experts say recent outbreaks and cooler weather could push those numbers up.

The state had the second-lowest positive test rate in the country, according to Covid Act Now, a nonprofit website run by epidemiologists, public health experts, data scientists and others that analyzes COVID-19 data. In the latest analysis, from Saturday, only Maine, at 0.5%,had a lower rate than New York, which was tied with Vermont for the second-lowest positivity rate of 1.2%. Idaho, with 23.9% of people testing positive, had the highest. The group uses a 7-day rolling average of test results.

In March and April, New York was the epicenter for the pandemic in the United States, with hundreds of residents dying of COVID-19 every day.

“We got from where we were in April because we distanced, we isolated,

October 11, 2020

| Health Education

UDUPI/BENGALURU: With Karnataka reporting Covid19 positive cases upwards of 10000 per day in recent past, the department of health and family welfare will embark on a state-wide health education programme. The campaign aimed at reaching the grassroots level will also use a bouquet of technology at the disposal of the government – social media included, noted Jawaid Akhtar, additional chief secretary to the department on Friday.

Interacting with deputy commissioners, chief executive officers of zilla panchayats and P S Harsha, commissioner, department of information and public relations via video-conference, Akthar said the above programme will be run extensively during October and November. The sharp spiral of Covid19 cases can be checked only with active participation of people, the most important stakeholders and educating them on its need is a must, he said.

Simple practice of wearing a mask in the correct manner, maintaining social distancing, not touching objects needlessly, washing
