On Thursday, Oct. 8, jurisdictions around Canada reported 2,437 new cases of COVID-19, 17 fatalities and 1,842 recently recovered patients.

Following investigations in Quebec and Manitoba, one death and one case were removed from their totals. However, Canada’s active case count still went up by 578 on Thursday, for a total of 18,494 currently infected patients nationwide.

Ontario started the day by reporting a record-high spike of 797 new cases of COVID-19. In addition, 100 new cases were identified in the K-12 school setting, in a 24-hour stretch in which 36 learning institutions reported their first infections.

In Quebec, more than 1,000 new patients were identified for the sixth time over a seven-day stretch, as worrisome trends continue to develop in multiple regions of the province. In addition, 202 new cases were identified among students and staff.

Sixty-seven new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in Manitoba, which marks the second-largest

Hospitals feel squeeze as coronavirus spikes in Midwest

October 1, 2020

| Health

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The coronavirus tightened its grip on the American heartland, with infections surging in the Midwest, some hospitals in Wisconsin and North Dakota running low on space and the NFL postponing a game over an outbreak that’s hit the Tennessee Titans football team.

Midwestern states are seeing some of the nation’s highest per capita rates of infection, and while federal health officials again urged some governors in the region to require masks statewide, many Republicans have resisted.

Like other states, health officials in Wisconsin had warned since the pandemic began that COVID-19 patients could overwhelm hospitals. That’s now happening for some facilities as experts fear a second wave of infections in the U.S.

A record number of people with COVID-19 were hospitalized in Wisconsin. Of those 737 patients Wednesday, 205 were in intensive care, with spikes in cases in northern parts of the state driving up the numbers.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — New York state health officials are investigating the recent rise in people testing positive for the coronavirus in Orange and Rockland counties, as well as in Brooklyn, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a Monday morning news conference.

On Thursday, the two Hudson Valley counties accounted for 12 percent of New York’s new positive test results. (SEE: Coronavirus Cases In Orange, Rockland Outpace Region)

In New York City, health officials also sounded an alarm on growing cases last week and warned that a new round of coronavirus lockdowns could be coming to neighborhoods should the upticks not improve. (SEE: ‘Alarming’ Coronavirus Growth Tracked In 8 NYC Neighborhoods)

State officials are beginning targeted probes into the spikes in Orange and Rockland counties. “Like this Brooklyn cluster — we have to get to the bottom of that,” Cuomo said.

For example, in Rockland County the positivity rate reached 6.7

Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington state, Wisconsin and Wyoming have all seen increases in the virus, the analysis found, based on data from Johns Hopkins University.

In the meantime, only 11 states saw new cases fall more than 10 percent compared to the week before: Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont and Virginia. The remaining 18 states saw level infection rates.

The news comes as public health experts have expressed concerns over a new fall and winter wave of the virus as colder temperatures cause Americans to spend more time indoors. A “huge surge” is likely as the end of the
