BRUSSELS — Authorities in Belgium, one of the European countries hit hardest by the coronavirus, are warning that the number of cases is rising at a “quite alarming” rate and that 10,000 people could be catching the virus each day by the end of the week.

Yves Van Laethem, a spokesman for Belgium’s COVID-19 crisis center, says that “all the indicators continue to rise, it must be said, in a quite alarming way, in all provinces and all age groups.”

An average of 4,145 new cases of the disease were being recorded every day in Belgium in the week of Oct. 2-8, an increase of 89% over the previous week, according to new data released Monday. More than 6,500 new cases were reported last Wednesday alone.

Van Laethem said that “if this rise continues at the same rate, we could see 10,000 new cases a day at the end of

| Health Issues

PARIS — French Prime Minister Jean Castex has warned that France could impose further restrictions as the coronavirus is spreading rapidly and the situation in hospitals is deteriorating in the country.

Speaking on French news broadcaster France Info on Monday, Castex said that “there can be no more slackening” to face the COVID-19 epidemic. Nine big cities, including Paris and Marseille, have been placed under maximum virus alert.

Castex called on French people to limit private gatherings in their homes. He said a “general lockdown” of the country “must be avoided by all means.”

French health authorities reported about 43,000 new infections over the weekend.

The director of the Paris region public health agency, Aurelien Rousseau, said that COVID-19 patients now occupy more than 42% of ICU beds in the capital and its suburbs. Speaking on BFM TV, he said that the rate of positive tests reached 17% in the

Heavy drinking is killing women in record numbers, and experts fear a COVID-related spike | Coronavirus

October 12, 2020

| Health News

On her last day of consciousness, Misty Luminais Babin held onto hope. “I choose life,” the 38-year-old told her sister, husband and doctor from inside the Ochsner Medical Center ICU.

But her sister, Aimee Luminais Calamusa, knew it was a choice made too late. A former ICU nurse herself, she was trained to recognize signs of the end. Even after draining 3 liters of fluid from Babin’s abdomen, her liver — mottled and scarred by years of heavy drinking — couldn’t keep up. The fluid had started building up in her lungs and she gasped for air. Without oxygen, her other organs began to fail.

“When I left that day, I knew that would be the last time I talked to her, ever,” said Calamusa. “It was really hard to walk out that door.”

Babin died two days later, on June 14 of this year, after a long struggle with

Largest single-day spike after jurisdictions report 2,558 new patients

October 11, 2020

| Health Article

On Friday, Oct. 9, jurisdictions around Canada reported 2,558 new cases of COVID-19, along with 31 fatalities and 2,016 recently recovered patients.

Alberta and Quebec combined to withdraw three deaths from previous dates. However, the nationwide updates have increased Canada’s active case count by 514, leaving 19,008 currently infected patients around the country.

The 2,558 new cases that were announced on Friday marks the largest single-day spike Canada has recorded throughout the pandemic. It surpasses the 2,437 cases that were announced on Thursday.

The latest modelling data was presented Friday by Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam. If people don’t start to limit their contacts, we could be seeing up to 5,000 cases a day by late October to early November.

“We’re at a tipping point in this pandemic,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday morning while reflecting on the rise in cases nationwide.

Arlington Sees Spike In Single-Day Numbers Of Coronavirus Cases

October 8, 2020

| Health Article

ARLINGTON, VA — Virginia Department of Health reported 49 new cases Thursday of COVID-19, the illness associated with the new coronavirus, in the Arlington Health District. That’s the highest number of new cases confirmed in a single day in Arlington since 50 were reported on May 29.

Ryan Hudson, acting public information officer for Arlington’s Public Health Division, said in an email that the higher number was due to VDH clearing a backlog cases.

In addition, VDH noted on its website that 689 cases from across Virginia should have been reported on Wednesday, due to a surveillance system reporting issue.

“Cases are not reported on the day the patient became ill, but on the day they have been classified as meeting the case definition for COVID-19,” the website said.

The total number of confirmed cases in Arlington stands at 4,132.

Virginia health officials also reported no new deaths due to

| Community Health

NEW LONDON, CT — The Ledge Light Health District has activated a “COVID Alert” in New London and developed a community plan to intervene and reduce the number of infections. The district’s contact tracing efforts have shown that the majority of new cases involve community-based transmission, rather than institutional based transmission, as was the case at the beginning of the pandemic.

Cases in New London County have surged recently. The county has witnessed a 267 percent increase in positive tests in recent weeks, with 154 cases being reported across the county as of Tuesday.

The news comes as hospitalizations have increased in the state. New London County saw an increase of one patient up to a net of 28 after several recent sharp rises.

Health Dept. Reports Spike in New State and Local Coronavirus Cases

October 8, 2020

| Dept Of Health

(Updated at 10:40 a.m.) Nearly 50 new coronavirus cases were reported in Arlington overnight, the biggest one-day spike for the county since late May.

This morning the Virginia Dept. of Health reported 49 new cases in Arlington, bringing the county’s cumulative total to 4,132 and the trailing seven-day average of new daily cases to 19.3 from 12.6 yesterday. The last time the daily average was higher was Sept. 1.

October had thus far been relatively uneventful in Arlington, with the trailing seven-day average of new daily COVID-19 infections here staying below 16 — until today.

Statewide numbers also jumped this morning, with 1,844 new reported cases in Virginia, the second-highest spike since the beginning of the pandemic. So far the state health department has not indicated, as it sometimes does, that there was a reporting issue that might account for the anomalous jump in cases.

In Arlington, no new hospitalizations

Northern California evangelical school tied to ‘very large’ spike in virus cases

October 7, 2020

| Health Article

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A Northern California county will face greater restrictions as it grapples with a surge in coronavirus cases, many of them tied to an evangelical college where more than 120 students and staff have tested positive in the last two weeks, health officials said Tuesday.

Shasta County health officials say that an outbreak of cases among students and staff at the Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry contributed to a recent spike in COVID-19 cases that bumped the county on Tuesday into a new level of regulations on restaurants, bars, theaters and businesses.

“We have been fortunate enough to have a relatively low number of cases throughout the course of the pandemic,” said Kerri Schuette, spokeswoman for Shasta County Health and Human Services. “But we’ve had a very large increase in cases over the past two to three weeks, with 123 being associated with the Bethel School of

Albany County says spike in COVID-19 cases likely tied to schools

ALBANY — Another county resident died from the coronavirus and the county is experiencing an increase in cases likely tied to the resumption of school, Albany County officials said Friday.

The victim, a man in his 70s with underlying health issues, is the county’s 135th known death from COVID-19. He was the 346th confirmed victim in the eight-county Capital Region.

At a morning briefing with reporters, Albany County Executive Dan McCoy said the percentage of new cases tied to outbreaks at the University at Albany are dropping but county officials warned they were seeing a slight increase in cases potentially tied to cases that have emerged since local school districts opened their doors in September..

On Sept. 17, 84 percent of the county’s new daily diagnoses were tied to the college. The following week, it dropped to 61 percent and it stood at just over 13 percent on Thursday, he
