A healthcare worker collects a coronavirus sample.

An IBM division is launching a blockchain-based health verification system designed to help individuals safely return to shared physical spaces like work, school, flights or stadiums.

  • IBM Watson Health, a data, analytics and technology company working within the health industry, announced Monday its Digital Health Pass would allow organizations to establish their own criteria for COVID-19 health verification.
  • These include test results and temperature scans that can be generated for an individual’s pass, and recorded and shared using the IBM Blockchain network.
  • Organizations are seeking solutions to aid the return to public spaces, according to general manager of IBM Watson Health Paul Roma, yet they also need to protect users’ privacy.
  • The digital pass will use “sophisticated cryptographic techniques” in order to verify individuals’ health statuses while ensuring the underlying data does not become public, the company said.
  • Users can manage their information through an encrypted smartphone wallet app, according

I’m going to keep it real: the mainstream image of “fit” is too narrow. Literally. We still live in a world where being perfectly thin and toned with a six pack is the pinnacle. And while fitness should be accessible to everybody, most of these images don’t represent every body. They largely leave out people of different sizes, genders, abilities, races, ages, and other identities. The push to achieve this fit ideal can overly-dominate gym culture, causing many to feel excluded from the community, to harshly judge themselves and others, ignore their body’s boundaries, or avoid the gym altogether (just to name some potential harms).

Thankfully, there are many gyms looking to create more inclusive spaces so that anyone who walks through their door feels welcomed. But since “inclusivity” is such a buzz word nowadays, it can be tough to decipher which organizations are actively

A new home for a fast-growing youth mental health centre in Toronto wants to redefine what healing spaces look like

What elements in a building can inspire wellness? For architect Robyn Whitwham, it’s large windows, good ventilation and colourful walls that make a space come alive.

These elements and more have inspired Whitwham as she designed the new hub for Stella’s Place, a fast-growing mental health centre serving young people, free of charge, in downtown Toronto.

The design journey has been a personal one for Whitwham, a 29-year-old Stantec architect, who falls into the same age category, 16-29, as the youth that Stella’s Place helps every day. The impact Stella’s Place has had on people her age, Whitwham said, was top of mind as she drafted sketches for what its new space in a former candy factory in Alexandra Park would look like.

“Everyone has a connection to them because everyone suffers from mental health challenges in some way, shape or form,” Whitwham said. “A place like that in the

The American Psychiatric Association’s data showed only one in every three Black Americans who need mental health services receive that care

ST. LOUIS — Dr. Kezia Jackson’s mission is clear.

In fact, the name of her business says it all.

While her office in Clayton has been closed for months because of COVID-19, she’s been operating Healing Spaces Psychological Services through video calls from her home.

“I think everyone can benefit from talking to someone about everything we’ve seen these last few months and just adjusting to this new way of living,” Jackson said. “So, making that more of a normal typical thing is one of my goals.”

For anyone, asking for help can be difficult.

For Black people, according to the American Psychiatric Association, seeking help and receiving services for mental health disorders is an even tougher process.

While the association’s research found that rates of mental illness in
