LIBERTY Launches “Community Smiles” Program in Florida to Help Enrollees Navigate Social Needs

October 1, 2020
| Community Health

LIBERTY Dental Plan (“LIBERTY”) announces the launch of the new “Community Smiles” Program to help our Florida Medicaid enrollees address barriers to health and connect to free or reduced-cost community resources.

Research shows the Social Determinants of Health, which include a variety of behavioral and environmental factors, serve as barriers to health and may have a greater impact on health outcomes than health care. These barriers – such as a lack of transportation and childcare – can also prevent enrollees from accessing their dental benefits and adhering to treatment plans, which contribute to poor oral health, untreated dental disease, and missed days of work and school.

LIBERTY developed this initiative to support our enrollees and promote ‘whole person’ health. After the program’s initial launch in California and Nevada, thousands of enrollees took advantage of the opportunity to search for and connect with community programs, particularly housing, food, and health care

Why Claiming Social Security at 62 Could Be Your Best Retirement Move

October 1, 2020
| Health Benefits

Choosing when to begin claiming Social Security benefits is one of the most important retirement decisions you’ll make, because the age you file for benefits will affect how much you receive each month for the rest of your life.

Some people may advise waiting until age 70 to start collecting benefits, because you’ll receive significantly larger checks each month compared to if you’d claimed earlier. However, for many retirees, claiming as early as possible at age 62 is actually one of the best retirement decisions you can make.

Sometimes it pays to claim early

Social Security benefits are designed so that, in theory, you’ll receive roughly the same amount over a lifetime no matter when you begin claiming. If you claim early, you’ll receive smaller checks but more of them. Claim later, and you’ll receive fewer — but bigger — checks.

That said, you have to

New Study Shows That Playing With Dolls Allows Children to Develop Empathy and Social Processing Skills

October 1, 2020

| Health Article

Barbie® and neuroscientists from Cardiff University have collaborated on a new study which for the first time uses neuroimaging as evidence to explore the effects of doll play

  • Evidence shows that doll play activates brain regions which are associated with social information processing and empathy, indicating that doll play enables children to rehearse, use and perform these skills even when playing on their own

  • To understand the relevancy of the study, Barbie independently commissioned a global survey in 22 different countries questioning 15,000 parents which showed 91 percent of parents rank empathy as a key social skill they would like their child to develop, but only 26 percent were aware that doll play could help their child develop these skills

  • Today Barbie launches an online hub featuring resources for parents, caregivers, and children, to support them in their social processing skills which has been developed alongside leading empathy expert, writer,

Celebrating National Recovery Month during the COVID-19 pandemic has been a unique experience to say the least. The recovery community is one that is accustomed to celebrating with in-person meetings, rallies and walks, but this September in particular has posed both new challenges and opportunities for us. I know that I was disappointed not to be able to receive my 13-year recovery coin at my home group in person.

Announcing this milestone over Zoom wasn’t the same as feeling the energy of a room full of recovering people, just as attending a virtual recovery rally isn’t the same as standing shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of people on the steps of your state capitol.

Despite this, since the onset of the pandemic, I have been moved by the fellowship and community that has sprung up around me. I have witnessed recovery community organizations and recovery houses in my community

MetroHealth receives $500,000 from UnitedHealthcare to expand two social determinants of health programs

September 29, 2020

| Health Food

With the help of a $500,000 grant from UnitedHealthCare, MetroHealth will expand two programs addressing social determinants of health for underserved populations in the Greater Cleveland area, according to a news release.

The three-year collaboration aims to expand initiatives that target high-risk pregnant mothers and medically complex patient populations through the programs, both of which connect participants to wrap-around services like housing support, food assistance, financial resources and employment resources to improve health outcomes, according to the release.

UnitedHealthcare and MetroHealth will collaborate to design and test effective care management strategies based on program findings, according to the release, which notes that this could impact many of UnitedHealthcare’s Medicaid members in the Cleveland area.

“The need for payer and provider partnerships to address the health needs of the underserved has never been more evident,” Mike Roaldi, CEO of UnitedHealthcare Community & State Ohio, said in a provided statement. “The COVID-19

  • While the fashion industry at large struggles in the pandemic, activewear is thriving, with sales and engagement spikes across social media.
  • Activewear brands like Fabletics and Vejas have been standouts in terms of engagement on influencer content mentioning them, according to new data from Traackr.
  • Business Insider broke down key findings from Traackr’s latest report, including top activewear brands and fashion influencer content by category.

The American fashion industry at large — and especially luxury — has declined in sales and engagement on social media during the pandemic.

Onetime stalwarts like J.Crew, JCPenney, and Brooks Brothers have filed for bankruptcy in the last few months while some luxury outlets like Need Supply and Totokaelo shut down permanently.

As a result, many brands have cut back their spending on paid deals with creators.

Luxury fashion brands saw engagements (the number of likes, shares,

A Unique IPA Centers on Social Determinants of Health

September 28, 2020

| Better Health

By Jacqueline LaPointe

September 28, 2020 – More and more healthcare providers and payers are teaming up with ride-sharing companies, food pantries, and other community-based organizations to address one of the largest drivers of patient outcomes – social determinants of health.

Where a patient lives, what food she can afford, her education level, if she drives, and a host of other socioeconomic, behavioral, and environmental factors drive health outcomes, whereas purely clinical care contributes to just 10 to 20 percent, according to commonly cited statistics.

As healthcare providers strive to reduce costs while improving quality of care, especially under risk-sharing contracts, they have realized the value of addressing these social determinants of health.

But developing, implementing, and notably, generating ROI on programs that target social determinants of health has been a major challenge for both providers and payers, leaving many to wonder if the programs will last long enough to

Police and mental health: Would social workers accompanying police protect mentally ill, keep them out of jail?

September 28, 2020

| Community Health

It has been more than a year and a half since police shot and killed Osaze Osagie.

The parents of the 29-year-old State College man called the police because they were concerned for his well-being. He was making threats towards himself and others, police said at the time.

Officers went to his home on March 20, 2019, but they were confronted by Osagie with a knife, they said. They shot and killed him when he ignored their commands to drop the knife and ran at the officers, according to police.

It turns out he was autistic and had mental-health issues, his parents, Sylvester and Iyunolu Osagie said, insisting police should have called mental health professionals who were familiar with their son’s condition.

“Isn’t there something wrong when you send the police to protect your son and take him to the hospital and they send him to the graveyard?” his mother

Social media and health information: Empowering or misleading?

September 28, 2020
| Health Facts

The search engine giants, Dr. Google or Dr. Bing, are visited by most of our patients before seeking medical help. In 1976, medical student Tom Ferguson, MD, first coined the term e-Patient. It means a health consumer who uses the Internet to gather information about a medical condition for themselves or on behalf of family and friends and uses electronic communication tools to cope with medical conditions. Dr. Ferguson described e-Patients as “empowered medical consumers.”1

During the COVID-19 pandemic, social media and networking platforms – such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, WhatsApp, online health support groups – are used increasingly by e-Patients to gather critical health information. Health care providers often take a conflicted stand on the use of social media. Though we want our patients to read about their illnesses and make informed choices, we often get frustrated by misdiagnoses, misinformation, and disinformation that comes with it.
