| Community Health

On the same day President Trump issued a tweet that said, in part, “Don’t be afraid of Covid,” Carroll County passed a milestone with more than 2,000 total cases of COVID-19 reported.

The 22 new cases announced by the Carroll County Health Department brought the county’s overall number to 2,007. That represents nearly 1.2% of Carroll’s population, a rate that is roughly half the national average. Additionally, 147 Carroll countians have died of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Trump, diagnosed with COVID-19 last week, tweeted Monday afternoon, in announcing he would soon be leaving the hospital and returning to the White House, “Feeling really good! Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life.”

County Health Officer Ed Singer concurred with the theme of Trump’s message, while emphasizing that everyone has a “social responsibility” to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“I would agree with the

Historians will likely look back at the COVID-19 global health pandemic and the Black Lives Matter social protests as a unique period in the history of the world.

The editors of Heart Sounds, the annual magazine of literary, auditory and visual art published by the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences’ Center for Medical Humanities, felt it was deserving of a special “social distancing” edition.

“We sought to exhibit how we have managed to stay in high spirits during this period of social distancing. We hope that this issue will highlight the talents housed in our community and inspire creativity within our readers,” chief editors Brian Yu and Jee Eun Choi wrote in the edition’s introduction.

Heart Sounds was started two years ago by Sara Xu, a current fourth-year medical student, to allow artistic and literary expression in the Jacobs School community.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy on Monday acknowledged that “Halloween is more than just a fun activity, but a real tradition” for many Americans, but said the fall festivities should ensure “everyone does that safely and responsibly.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently issued guidelines which label high, low and moderate-risk activities for families and kids who will be seeking candy door-to-door or headed to pumpkin patches and orchards. Social distancing while trick-or-treating and avoiding packed holiday parties are among the recommendations from local health agencies nationwide.

October 4, 2020

| Health Benefits

Cork may well be a city of hills, but a new campaign aimed at promoting the use of e-bikes is hoping “to flatten the curve” for many would-be Leeside cyclists.

It comes as Cork City Council announced plans for two new cycle lanes. The We-Bike campaign, launched by Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr Joe Kavanagh and Mayor of Co Cork Cllr Mary Linehan-Foley, is aimed at promoting electric bikes as an everyday commuting option in Cork city and county.

The two new cycle lanes are planned around University College Cork and Cork Institute of Technology to encourage students and staff at both institutions to get on their bikes.

The new cycle lanes will run along Donovan’s Road and College Road, with a link between Magazine Road to Glasheen Road, all near UCC, while a second route will go along Melbourn Road and Rossa Avenue, near CIT.
