| Health Education

Voters throughout the state will decide in November whether to let stand or repeal a comprehensive sexual health education bill passed by the state Legislature earlier this year.

Referendum 90 asks voters whether Senate Bill 5395 — which was passed by the state Legislature in March — should be enacted.

The legislation, which is suspended pending the outcome of the election, would require school districts to begin offering “comprehensive sexual health education” to students of all ages.

For all grade levels, parents and guardians would be able to opt their students out of the lessons, the law states.

What “comprehensive sexual health education” means varies by grade, according to the state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

For example, in grades K-3, curriculum could focus on what is called social emotional learning, where students learn about concepts such as self-esteem and decision-making.

“(Social emotional learning) provides skills to do

By DON THOMPSON, Associated Press

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — More than 100 suspected victims of a UCLA obstetrician-gynecologist will have more time to file legal claims against the doctor and university under one of nine measures California Gov. Gavin Newsom approved Tuesday to aid crime survivors.

Similar to previous provisions in different cases, the legislation allows a one-year window — all of 2021 — to file claims that could otherwise have been too late under existing statutes of limitations. The bill is specific to UCLA and responds to allegations that Dr. James Heaps, who worked at the university’s student health centers and its medical center, committed dozens of sexual assaults.

It’s unclear how many of the more than 100 women who have made claims against Heaps will benefit from the bill, according to a legislative analysis. It would mainly aid those who were assaulted more than 10 years ago ,

The extent of DPH’s investigation into the matter was unclear, but the department has purview over regulating hospitals.

Daniels remains in custody on $500,000 bail as he awaits an Oct. 26 court date.

In an arrest warrant affidavit, investigators noted that hospital staff took more than five hours to notify authorities about suspicions that Daniels had sexually assaulted the woman.

When asked about the delay, a hospital spokeswoman said she could not comment further, citing medical privacy laws.

Maputo – Additional funding from the Government of Norway of $1.1 million USD will enable UNFPA to support the Government of Mozambique to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak, with a focus on ensuring the health, protection and safety of 500,000 women and girls in Cyclone Idai and Kenneth affected areas.

Women and girls pay a high price during humanitarian crises – being more likely to die from pregnancy and childbirth complications to experiencing increased risks of gender-based violence (GBV). Understanding these known challenges, the additional funding mitigates these consequences and increases the availability of services, care and support, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and protection and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention, in Sofala and Cabo Delgado Provinces.

“Norway is fully committed to supporting those responding to the needs of vulnerable girls and women who are already recovering from devastating Cyclones, and are now faced with the

Amy Hequembourg.

The COVID-19 pandemic has magnified health disparities among minority racial and ethnic populations. Amy Hequembourg, associate professor in the School of Nursing, is also concerned about another population facing disproportionate health risks: sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations.

SGM populations represent diverse individuals who suffer from a variety of health disparities. Unique forms of stress resulting from discrimination and prejudice targeting SGM identities are at the heart of these disparities, and drive poor health outcomes and risky health behaviors.

“Heterosexism operates as a system of interrelated cultural, legal and social structures that assume compulsory heterosexuality, and marginalize and penalize those who don’t conform to that expectation, thus perpetuating inequality” says Hequembourg, whose research focuses on understanding why SGM individuals are at risk for experiencing adverse health outcomes.

“Sexual minority stressors, such as repeated exposure to daily micro-aggressions and prejudice, are rooted in
