Regardless of political party, elections weigh on many Americans, and with long-lasting coverage, it can be difficult to escape the political noise. A Baylor College of Medicine expert offers advice to those experiencing distress throughout election season.

“There is uncertainty with change,” said Dr. Eric Storch, professor and vice chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and vice chair of psychology in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor. “People worry about how their lives will change depending on the election results or that the elected individual may not represent them or their values – this can heighten feelings of distress throughout the election.”

Keeping up with your mental health is crucial if you feel triggered by political events. If you’re experiencing heightened levels of stress due to the election, try to address those feelings by being an active participant in the political process:

This story appears in STYLECASTER’s Activism Issue, starring Jurnee Smollett. Click here for more.

I need a drink. I’ve never been so stressed. That was terrifying. My anxiety is through the roof. These are just some of the texts and messages I received from friends following the first presidential debate of the 2020 election season. Personally, I was feeling all of the above and then some, and while it was comforting to know that I wasn’t alone in my despair, it brought to my attention the fact that my loved ones and I were not mentally prepared to handle a negative outcome in the upcoming election. It was through our collective post-debate trauma that I realized the importance of preserving mental health during election season—and the reality of just how damaging things can get if we don’t take this seriously.

2020 has been a trying time for virtually everyone, and

Netflix’s “The Crown,” which tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II over the decades, will address Princess Diana’s struggle with bulimia as a young woman, years before she decided to speak openly about her condition.

The actor set to play the beloved royal, Emma Corrin, opened up about the challenging nature of the material in a recent interview with USA Today.

“(Princess Diana) was very candid about (her eating disorder), which I think is incredibly progressive of her at that time,” Corrin, 24, told the paper. “Obviously, it’s something we’re talking about now, but even now if someone comes out and says that is something they’ve dealt with, it’s a big deal. … I knew that it was central to her experience, and I wanted to do that justice.”

  • Courtney Malenius, of Brooklyn, New York, and seven of her neighbors attended the season 46 premiere of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” last weekend.
  • The group had to self-administer rapid COVID-19 tests, remain separated in pods, and wear masks.
  • One public-health expert told Insider he would’ve attended the show given the safety precautions, while another said she wouldn’t feel comfortable being inside for that long, even with masks and pods.
  • Following coronavirus guidelines that say TV programs can have live audiences consisting of employees, cast, and crew only, Malenius and her friends each got $150 for attending the taping.
  • “I didn’t think we were being sneaky. Whether or not the show was, I don’t know,” Malenius said about the money.

Indians’ Terry Francona reveals he underwent several surgeries during season for major health issues

CLEVELAND — Indians manager Terry Francona revealed he underwent several surgeries in a four-day span and required an extended stay in intensive care while dealing with major health issues that sidelined him for most of the 2020 season.

Francona missed 48 of Cleveland’s 62 games during the pandemic-shortened season. He initially underwent an operation for a gastrointestinal problem in August that had bothered him for a year.

That was followed by blood clotting that led to more operations and him being admitted to the Cleveland Clinic.

“It was kind of a tough time,” the 61-year-old Francona said Wednesday on a Zoom call from his home in Arizona. “I don’t want to go through that again.”

Francona hopes to manage next season, which would be his ninth with the Indians. He’ll revisit with doctors in seven weeks to gauge his progress.

In the meantime, he needs to get stronger and has

CDC Stresses Vaccines As Newark Enters Flu Season

October 6, 2020

NEWARK, CA — October is here, and though it’s early enough in the season that influenza cases in Newark remain minimal, public health officials are using this time to remind Americans that getting their flu shot this year is more important than ever.

Nationally, just under 45,900 cases have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of those cases, 5,762 were reported in California Monday.

This week’s flu numbers come as the country approaches 7.3 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus. With no end in sight to the pandemic, the CDC is also predicting the United States will see anywhere from 39 million to 56 million influenza cases this season.

As the country prepares to weather flu season amid a pandemic, CDC officials say getting the flu vaccine will help curb a potential strain on U.S. health care providers and hospitals.

However, American parents aren’t quite on

| Community Health

Health officials across the U.S. are bracing for flu season while in the midst of battling the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a phenomenon many in the healthcare community have dubbed the “twindemic.”

Local doctors, pharmacists and healthcare providers are advocating for as many people in Aiken County to get vaccinated for influenza as soon as possible. They hope that early preparation can help prevent people from being infected by multiple respiratory illnesses like colds, strep throat and coronavirus that will be circulating this fall.

“This is going to be the season,” said Dr. Kenneth Jones, chief medical officer at Rural Health Services. “We’ve never had anything like this before. It’s all new, so we’re going to have to figure it out as we go along. We’re probably going to end up over-treating some people, but I’d rather over treat than under-treat at this time.”

It is possible to become infected with
