Food science class with Obama chef a recipe for remotely engaging K-12 students

When elementary school teacher Cheresse Thomas taught virtual summer school to help keep kids busy during the pandemic, math and science were on the menu — and so were smoothies and ceviche.

Thomas’ students — kindergarteners and first- and second-graders — were among some 1,700 K–12 students from across the Los Angeles Unified School District participating in a new UCLA science and food class. Teachers from more than 40 classes customized the course outline to their students’ age level, teaching them the science behind each week’s recipe — and sharing the grocery list. That prepared them for the live weekly cooking webinar and Q&A session with UCLA’s partner Bill Yosses, former pastry chef for the Obama White House.

“The cooking demonstrations really got the students’ attention,” said Thomas, who currently teaches third grade at Yes Academy in the South Los Angeles neighborhood of Hyde Park. “The next day they’d come

Dr. Judy Melinek knew it was time to make a change when she started fear for her health and safety.

While working as acting chief forensic pathologist for Alameda County in California, she read early reports about a virus in Wuhan, China. By June, after repeatedly sounding the alarm about the need for health workers to have sufficient personal protective equipment, she’d had enough. She also hoped for temperature checks, social distancing and masks, but she noticed that not all of the staff in her office were taking these steps.

And then an email appeared offering her the opportunity to relocate to New Zealand, a country that has reported less than 2,000 coronavirus cases and 25 deaths, drawing widespread

Coronavirus pandemic and election-year politics collide, eroding trust in science

October 11, 2020

| Health Article

The positive development immediately became entangled in election-year politics, with President Trump repeatedly making false and exaggerated claims about the new therapeutics. He called them a cure, which they’re not. He said he was about to approve them — a premature promise given that the FDA’s career scientists are charged with reviewing the applications.

This has been the 2020 pattern: Politics has thoroughly contaminated the scientific process. The result has been an epidemic of distrust, which further undermines the nation’s already chaotic and ineffective response to the coronavirus.

The White House has repeatedly meddled with decisions by career professionals at the FDA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other science-based agencies. Many of the nation’s leading scientists, including some of the top doctors in the administration, are deeply disturbed by the collision of politics and science and bemoan its effects on public health.

“I’ve never seen anything that closely

Eric J. Topol, MD: Hello. I’m Eric Topol, editor-in-chief of Medscape, and I have the privilege today to interview Dr Stephen Hahn, the commissioner of the FDA. So, Stephen, welcome. It’s great to have you with us.

Stephen M. Hahn, MD: Well, Eric, it’s great to be here. I appreciate the invitation. And I’m looking forward to our conversation. These are really important topics for the country.

Topol: No question. Just as a way of background. Dr Hahn came on as commissioner of the FDA in December. I don’t think he knew exactly what he was getting into. He has an amazing background. Undergraduate at Rice and Temple for medical school. We actually shared some history at the University of California, San Francisco, where he did his medical residency. He was

NevadaTeach responds to community needs with free virtual math and science tutoring for 6th – 12th graders

October 7, 2020

| Community Health

In response to the need for tutoring to supplement the online learning many middle and high school students are facing, the NevadaTeach program at the University of Nevada, Reno has set up opportunities for free virtual tutoring for mathematics and science courses.

NevadaTeach students are offering free virtual tutoring for 6th – 12th grade students in order to contribute to the success of the students in the community. Due to the shift to online learning, NevadaTeach faculty wanted to find a way to help students. Typically, NevadaTeach pre-service teachers apply their knowledge and skills learned within their NevadaTeach coursework to field-based interactions with students in middle and high schools. With distance and hybrid learning, as well as social distance guidelines within schools, these valuable field-based interactions are difficult or impossible to obtain. To allow the pre-service teachers these valuable interactions, the faculty put together free online tutoring. The tutors consist

Health officials say political battles over emergency orders don’t change the fact that wearing a mask in public will save lives during the coronavirus pandemic.

A mask is adjusted on the first day of school at Northeast Elementary School in Jackson on Tuesday morning, Aug. 25, 2020. The first cohort returned to class Tuesday with the second half of the students returning to class on Thursday.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issued an emergency order Monday requiring face coverings in public spaces, restricting gatherings and limiting the capacity of bars and other venues. The order reaffirms a handful of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive orders that were invalidated by the Michigan Supreme Court last week for reasons unrelated to the orders’ ability to prevent COVID-19 spread.

MDHHS Director Robert Gordon said his emergency orders, based on a

A New Survey from the Brand Reveals the Need for Ongoing Science Education

More than 9 in 10 of parents of school-aged kids (91%) feel that having the whole family learn about how to prevent the spread of bacteria would result in a healthier household, according to a new survey from Microban 24, a revolution in home sanitizing that protects surfaces against bacteria for 24 hours*. As children across the country settle into their new school year routines – whether in person or virtually – there is no better time to teach them about bacteria, and how to protect against them.

Are non-stick pans safe? | Live Science

October 4, 2020

| Health

Spending each morning at the kitchen sink scraping at the charred remains of breakfast gets tedious after a while. Non-stick cookware may seem like an appealing alternative — but is it safe?

Usually when people inquire about the safety of their non-stick cookware, they’re talking about Teflon, said Suzanne Fenton, a reproductive endocrinologist at the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences in North Carolina. Also known as polytertrafluoroethylene (PTFE), this clear plastic is used to coat metal pots and pans, giving them a waxy, easy-to-clean surface — and for decades, scientists have debated whether it’s safe for cooking.

Experts tend to agree that Teflon itself isn’t a problem. The coating itself is considered non-toxic. Even if you ingest small flakes of it, it passes right through you. But some experts are concerned about what happens when Teflon gets too hot. “When pans are overheated, that PTFE coating begins to disintegrate,”
