How a Chilean raspberry scam dodged food safety controls from China to Canada

SANTIAGO (Reuters) – In January 2017, Chilean Customs inspectors acted on a tip from a whistleblower: The country’s prized crop of raspberries was under threat.

Inspectors raided the offices of Frutti di Bosco, a little-known fruit trading company on the second floor of a tower block in downtown Santiago.

The files, company data and sales records they seized revealed a food trading racket that spanned three continents.

At its heart was a fraud centered on raspberries. Low-cost frozen berries grown in China were shipped to a packing plant in central Chile. Hundreds of tons of fruit were repackaged and rebranded by Frutti di Bosco as premium Chilean-grown organics, then shipped to consumers in Canadian cities including Vancouver and Montreal, according to documents prepared by Chilean Customs as part of its

The cost of reopening

“It is important to realize that phase one of our reopening will be very different from our normal senior center operations. However, we hope that with each new reopening phase, we continue to get closer to ‘normal.’ Our top priority right now is to provide the services our members need in the safest way possible,” said Beavercreek Senior Center Supervisor, Tyler Barlage.

Gov. Mike DeWine set a reopening date of senior centers and adult day centers for September 21 and laid out several measures the facilities will have to follow.

Senior centers reopening are required to open with a limited capacity. They need to screen all participants and staff and keep a daily log and test all staff and volunteers every 14 days and test some participants. Senior centers must also require all staff and participants to wear face coverings and use CDC guidelines for cleaning

Allina health care workers begin limited two-day strike over safety conditions amidst pandemic

October 6, 2020

| Health Magazine

A two-day strike of 220 medical tech workers and therapists at Allina Health in Minneapolis and Shakopee, Minnesota began Monday. The walkout took place one month after being overwhelmingly authorized by a vote of the workers. It took place despite being postponed by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Healthcare Minnesota union over threats of legal action by Allina Health.

Health care workers are seeking wage increases, better health care coverage and retirement plans, and increased paid time off as well as a general improvements in workplace safety. These concerns are especially pressing given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The SEIU had previously come to a temporary agreement with Allina that the company pay an initial one-time stipend to employees should they be exposed to the virus and need to quarantine. Workers are demanding that they be granted full wages and benefits during these periods to reduce the spread and risk

Today, during a virtual ceremony, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and its regulatory counterparts in Mexico – the Federal Commission for the Protection from Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS) and the National Service of Agro-Alimentary Health, Safety and Quality (SENASICA) – enhanced a partnership to work together on food safety in both countries.

This Statement of Intent broadens and strengthens the scope of their existing partnership to include the safety of all human food regulated by the FDA. Additionally, this latest partnership embraces the use of new and emerging technologies, leverages food safety programs at SENASICA and COFEPRIS and their work with local industry, and further enhances the collaborations of U.S. and Mexico with other key partners.

Leaders in Washington region ask White House to follow safety protocols as coronavirus outbreak spreads

October 5, 2020

The Rose Garden event Sept. 26 that is at the center of the outbreak came as the District’s seven-day rolling average of new infections had trended downward for weeks. The city this month has recorded its lowest number of caseloads since early July, averaging fewer than 40 daily cases with an infection rate lower than that of most states.

During a Monday news conference, Bowser said city leaders “have reached out to the White House on a couple of levels, a political level and a public health level, to make sure that any assistance we could provide could be rendered.”

She suggested that White House officials abide by local public health regulations, including avoiding large gatherings and self-quarantining while waiting for the results of a coronavirus test. The mayor said her administration would not comment on individual cases in the city linked to the White House outbreak.

“Obviously we are

Hand Sanitizers Packed Like Food And Beverage Pouches Recalled Over Safety Concerns

KEY POINTS

  • A company voluntarily recalled hand sanitizers that resembled food and beverage pouches
  • The pouches also had children’s characters on them
  • Ingesting hand sanitizer is not safe, especially for children
  • The confusing packaging could lead to accidental hand sanitizer ingestion

A company has voluntarily recalled several of its hand sanitizer products with packages that look rather like food or drink pouches. Such products may lead to accidental ingestion, which is potentially harmful to health.

On Oct. 2, the FDA released a company announcement from Ashtel Studios voluntarily recalling several 25-milliliter containers of hand sanitizers that are packaged in what looks like food or beverage pouches and, even have children’s characters displayed on them.

The recall affects the following products, all of which are packaged in 25 ml pouches:

  • PAW Patrol Hand Sanitizer (NDC 70108-042-01 )
  • JoJo Siwa Hand Sanitizer (NDC 70108-044-01 )
  • Hot Wheels Hand Sanitizer (NDC 70108-045-01 )

But what happens outside school may be another matter. A sleepover in Nance County was linked to more than a dozen quarantines and a number of cases.

“The thing is, you can’t control what people do when they go home,” Sepers said.

Lawler said the lack of evidence of transmission in schools may be because officials are only looking for — and testing — kids with symptoms. Anecdotally, he said, local researchers are hearing of cases in which kids aren’t being taken for testing.

The key to keeping kids in school, he said, will be to keep them in masks and at a safe distance apart.

“Everybody wants kids in school,” he said. “Certainly people in public health and medicine understand school, for a variety of reasons, is critical for kids. But you have to find a balance that allows you to do that as much as possible without driving
