Gilbert says marijuana poses a threat to health, safety, security of community

GILBERT, AZ — Gilbert is set to discuss marijuana posing a ‘threat to the health, safety, and security of the community’ at a council meeting next week.

The agenda indicates that the council will discuss an ordinance that would be put in place if Prop 207 passes in November.

The ordinance reads, “The Town finds that proposition 207 authorizes marijuana establishments and testing facilities to use chemical extraction or chemical synthesis, including butane and other flammable gases, to extract marijuana concentrate, which poses a threat to the health, safety, and security of the community and increases the responsibilities of law enforcement and other Town departments to respond to violations of state and local laws, including building, electrical, plumbing and fire codes.”

If the proposition passes, medical marijuana dispensaries will be the first in the state to start selling cannabis to those over the age of 21, until the state’s health

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Belmont University announced Friday plans to work with HCA Healthcare to implement health and safety protocols for the October 22 Presidential Debate at the University’s Curb Event Center.

HCA is supporting protocols developed by the Cleveland Clinic, who is serving as the global health advisor for all four debates, and agreed to by the Commission on Presidential Debates.

Detroit issues public health order to keep state’s COVID-19 safety rules

Detroit’s chief public health officer on Friday issued an order that maintains the state’s rules for wearing facial coverings to combat COVID-19.

Mayor Mike Duggan and the city’s Public Health Officer Denise Fair announced the move during a news conference livestreamed from the city’s Public Safety Headquarters downtown.

The move is intended to clear up confusion over rules for wearing masks in public and limiting the number of people in gatherings after a Michigan Supreme Court decision last week struck down Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s authority to establish mandates.

Duggan said the city’s public health officer was issuing the order to maintain Whitmer’s emergency orders.

“What we are doing is making sure that the steps the governor has taken continue to protect the city,” the mayor said. “We are going to make sure the city has certainty and continuity.”

GILBERT, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — The Town of Gilbert City Council will hear and consider adopting an ordinance that bans marijuana.

Voters will decide on Proposition 207, which would legalize marijuana in Arizona, but the town wants to create some guidelines for the residents at a council meeting on Oct. 13.

The ordinance indicates Gilbert believes marijuana “poses a threat to the health, safety and security of the community and increases the responsibilities of law enforcement and other Town departments to respond to violations of state and local laws, including building, electrical, plumbing, and fire codes.”

According to town documents, Gilbert “seeks to protect public health, safety, and welfare by prohibiting marijuana establishments and/or marijuana testing facilities in the Town.”

If the ordinance passes, residents will be allowed to use marijuana for personal use, but not in public places.

The White House is set to host “Fall Garden Tours” for lawmakers and the public this season to show off the newly renovated Rose Garden.

The tours will be hosted Oct. 17 and Oct. 18, even after more than 20 staffers, journalists, allies of the administration and GOP lawmakers tested positive for coronavirus following contact with the White House.

The tours are free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Visitors will be able to tour the South Lawn, First Ladies Garden, White House Kitchen Garden and Rose Garden.

Guest capacity is limited, and visitors are required to wear a face mask. Tickets will be offered to all congressional offices.

President Trump and first lady Melania tested positive for COVID-19 last week, but White House physician Dr. Sean Conley announced the president will be able to return to public engagements this weekend.

USDA Seeks Nominations for Membership on Food Safety Advisory Committee

WASHINGTON, DC, Oct. 08, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is soliciting nominations for membership to the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods (NACMCF). There are nine vacancies on the advisory committee.

Nominations are being sought for individuals with scientific expertise in the fields of microbiology, epidemiology, food technology (food, clinical, and predictive), toxicology, risk assessment, infectious disease, biostatistics, and other related sciences. USDA is also seeking nominations for one individual affiliated with a consumer group to serve on NACMCF. This member will serve as a representative member to provide a consumer viewpoint and is not required to have a scientific background. Individuals who may be currently employed by state and federal governments, industry, academia or consumer groups are invited to submit nominations. Self-nominations are welcome.

New studies, from both federal and private research groups, generally indicate that when the country marked precipitous job losses from March to May — with more than 25 million people forced out of work — the loss of health insurance was less dramatic.

That’s partly because large numbers of mostly low-income workers who lost employment during the crisis were in jobs that already did not provide health insurance. It helped that many employers chose to leave furloughed and temporarily laid-off workers on the company insurance plan.

Fort Wayne, Ind. (October 8, 2020) – With Halloween approaching, the Allen County Department of Health is recommending the community use extra precautions during their holiday celebrations to prevent an increase in COVID-19 spread.

“We can’t expect to carry on with all traditions as usual in the midst of a global pandemic,” said Dr. Matthew Sutter, Allen County health commissioner. “But by getting creative and using tools we know work like properly wearing face coverings, maintaining social distance and frequent hand hygiene, kids and adults alike can still have a safer and happy Halloween.”
