Rural communities that are vibrant, growing and healthy enjoy a handful of similar resources. One is access to education, and another is access to health care. Ask yourself this question: “Would I move my family to a community that does not meet my needs and expectations as they relate to education and health care?” The answer is no!

Access to health care services is vital to recruit and retain businesses and the jobs they bring. After a great deal of hard work, Gothenburg was able to create the right environment to attract Fortune 500 companies. Access to quality health care services was critical to this process. To many seeking the good life in rural Nebraska, driving 20 miles, instead of 100 for a checkup or procedure, is a deal maker. It means employers seeking to fill jobs can ensure future employees that health care for their families is readily available.

Cheek: Technology the key to better health care for rural Texans – Opinion – Amarillo Globe-News

Texas has a rural health care disparity.

This means that 75 percent of our counties are federally designated health professional shortage areas. There simply aren’t enough doctors and nurses. Sixty-four of our counties lack a hospital, and 25 counties have no primary care physician. In short, rural health care disparity in our state means some 3 million Texans struggle to access the care they need.

Addressing the health gap facing our medically underserved areas would start with increased education about the benefits of checkups and procedures, better health care access, and expanded affordability. We also must find ways to combat the persistent, systemic disadvantages that often serve as a barrier to quality care.

This is an enormously complex problem without an easy solution. The best approach is to focus on one health care issue at a time where progress can be made. Improving our ability to screen more Texans for

Survey: Rural U.S. has less access to healthcare since start of COVID-19 pandemic

Oct. 7 (UPI) — Nearly one in four households in rural areas of the United States were unable to get treatment for serious medical problems this summer because of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a survey released Wednesday.

Results of the survey were released by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

The survey of more than 3,400 U.S. adults, conducted between July 1 and Aug. 3, also found that 40% of rural households could not find a doctor willing to see them as the new new coronavirus spread in their local area.

“During a time of record-setting growth in new COVID-19 cases across rural America, rural communities are facing distinct challenges handling the coronavirus outbreak due to long-standing systemic health and social inequities,” the authors of the report wrote.

“When it comes to healthcare, the coronavirus outbreak has dramatically affected delivery, with

Even when there isn’t a pandemic, finding the right doctor can be tough in rural eastern Ohio. Reid Davis, 21, and his mother Crystal live in Jefferson County, which hugs the Ohio River near West Virginia. Their home is surrounded by farms, hayfields and just a few neighbors.

“To the nearest hospital, you’re talking about 50 minutes to an hour,” Reid Davis says.

Davis’ mother has rheumatoid arthritis, a severe autoimmune condition, for which she sees a specialist. That doctor prescribes an injectable medication and also works on her joints to ease inflammation and pain, he says.

But when

Rural Hospitals Teeter on Financial Cliff as COVID Medicare Loans Come Due

October 1, 2020

David Usher is sitting on $1.7 million he’s scared to spend.

The money lent from the federal government is meant to help hospitals and other health care providers weather the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet some hospital administrators have called it a payday loan program that is now, brutally, due for repayment at a time when they still need help.

Coronavirus cases have “picked up recently and it’s quite worrying,” said Usher, chief financial officer at the 12-bed Edwards County Medical Center in rural western Kansas. Usher said he would like to use the money to build a negative-pressure room, a common strategy to keep contagious patients apart from those in the rest of the hospital.

But he’s not sure it’s safe to spend that cash. Officially, the total repayment of the loan is due this month. Otherwise, according to the loan’s terms, federal regulators will stop reimbursing the hospitals for Medicare
