Trish Scalia, the wife of President Donald Trump’s Labor Secretary Eugene Scalia, has tested positive for Covid-19, the Labor Department said Tuesday night.

The agency said in a statement that doctors performed the test Tuesday afternoon. She has “mild symptoms but [is] doing well,” the statement said.

Eugene Scalia, the son of the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, tested negative Friday night, according to the Labor Department. He has experienced no symptoms.

“The Secretary and Mrs. Scalia will follow the advice of health professionals for Trish’s recovery and the health of those around them. For the time being, the Secretary will work from home while continuing to carry out the mission of the Department and the President’s agenda,” the agency said in the statement.

The secretary and his wife attended the Rose Garden ceremony last month where Trump officially nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett to fill the seat of

Deaths in Colorado rose 20% during first 6 months of pandemic

October 11, 2020

| Dept Of Health

The number of deaths in Colorado jumped 20% during the first six months of the coronavirus pandemic as at least 3,788 more residents died than would be expected, reflecting the outbreak’s grim toll on human life even beyond those killed directly by the virus.

The increase in fatalities is largely due to the respiratory disease COVID-19, which has become the fourth leading cause of death in the state.

But other causes — including overdoses, cirrhosis, heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s — also saw significant spikes, according to an analysis of state data by The Denver Post.

“The pandemic has affected every aspect of our lives, including every aspect of our health care and our health,” said Dr. Matthew Wynia, director of the Center for Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Colorado.

Overall, an estimated 22,723 Coloradans died between March and August, which is up from the 18,935 deaths the

Fauci calls Amy Coney Barrett ceremony in Rose Garden ‘superspreader event’

October 10, 2020

| Health News

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, on Friday called President Donald Trump’s Rose Garden ceremony last month announcing Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court a “superspreader event.”

Fauci, who was interviewed by CBS News Radio’s White House correspondent Steven Portnoy, defended the efficacy of wearing masks to slow the spread of Covid-19 and used the ceremony as an example.

“Well, I think the data speaks for themselves. We had a superspreader event in the White House and it was in a situation where people were crowded together and were not wearing masks,” he said. “So the data speak for themselves.”

This is not the first time Fauci has been at odds with Trump, who has had a cavalier attitude toward Covid-19 since being released from the hospital Monday after being infected with the virus, and has boasted about his apparent recovery and given mixed messaging around

KFF Survey Finds Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance Premiums Rose 4% in 2020

October 9, 2020

| Health Benefits

Family premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance rose 4% over the past year, averaging $21,342, according to the benchmark Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) 2020 Employer Health Benefits Survey.

Conducted from January to July of this year, the annual survey, whose findings were also published in the journal Health Affairs, polled 1765 nonfederal public and private firms on their employer-sponsored health coverage, including premiums, employee contributions, cost-sharing provisions, offer rates, wellness programs, and employer practices.

Although it does not capture the full scope of the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on health care costs and coverage, survey results still exhibit the rising cost that employees are responsible for contributing. On average, the study found that workers are paying $,588 in out-of-pocket costs toward family coverage, with employers paying the remaining amount.

“Conducted partly before the pandemic, our survey shows the burden of health costs on workers remains high,

Houston nonprofit The Rose determined to help uninsured women receive breast cancer treatment

October 9, 2020

| Health Article

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted millions of lives in many ways, one of which is the severe cut back in the number people keeping up with their routine checkups. Houston-based nonprofit group The Rose, which has been helping women receive breast cancer diagnoses and treatments for over 35 years regardless of their ability to pay, is determined not to give up on its mission.

Dorothy Gibbons, CEO and co-founder of The Rose, said the marked increase in the number of people putting off their mammograms was disastrous since early detection was the key to stopping cancer in most cases.

“We are conducting our screenings while observing social distancing,” said Gibbons. “We’re at 75 percent of what we normally would be doing. Some of our ladies are having to wait a bit to get their mammogram.”

The Rose operates two clinics in Houston and Bellaire respectively where women, insured or uninsured,

Washington, D.C. health department faults White House over Rose Garden event, urges testing

October 8, 2020

| Dept Of Health

In an extraordinary step, the Washington, D.C., Department of Health has released an open letter appealing to all White House staff and anyone who attended a Sept. 26 event in the Rose Garden to seek medical advice and take a COVID-19 test.

The letter indicates a lack of confidence in the White House medical team’s own contact tracing efforts regarding an ongoing virus outbreak that has infected President Donald Trump, multiple senior staff members and two U.S. senators, among others.

Co-signed by nine other local health departments from neighboring jurisdictions in Maryland and Virginia, the letter flatly states a belief that contact tracing on the outbreak has been insufficient.

It says the public appeal is based on, “our preliminary understanding that there has been limited contact tracing performed to date, there may be other staff and residents at risk for exposure to COVID positive individuals.”

It asks all White House

Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance Rose 4% in 2020

A Kaiser Family Foundation study shows that the growing cost of health insurance for employees continues to outstrip wage growth.

Family premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance averaged $21,342 this year, a 4% increase that outpaced wage growth, according to the 2020 benchmark KFF Employer Health Benefits Survey.

Workers this year contributed an average of $5,588 to the cost of family coverage, with employers paying the rest, and that the average annual premium for single coverage rose 4%, to $7,470, according to the survey, which polled 1,765 public and private companies from January to July.

“Conducted partly before the pandemic, our survey shows the burden of health costs on workers remains high, though not getting dramatically worse,” Kaiser Family Foundation President and CEO Drew Altman said in a media release.

“Things may look different moving forward as employers grapple with the economic and health upheaval sparked by the pandemic,”

| Health Plans

Employer-sponsored health insurance premiums rose 4 percent over the past year, outpacing the increase in workers’ wages and the rate of inflation, according to an analysis released Thursday by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Average annual premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance are now $7,470 for a single plan and $21,342 for a family plan, up 4 percent from the previous year. Those dollar amounts include both worker and employer contributions.

Meanwhile, wages increased by 3.4 percent alongside 2.1 percent inflation.

About 157 million people get their insurance through work, and the costs have steadily risen over the years.

The average premium for family coverage, including the employer contribution, has increased 22 percent over the last five years and 55 percent over the last decade.

In 2020, on average, workers contributed 17 percent of the premium for single coverage — about $1,243 — and 27 percent for family coverage, or about $5,588.

White House not contact tracing Rose Garden event considered possible ‘superspreader’: report

October 5, 2020

The White House is not contact tracing guests and staff who attended a Rose Garden event for the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, despite many viewing it as a possible spreader of the coronavirus, The New York Times reported on Monday.

The celebration, which took place 10 days ago, is viewed by some as the potential epicenter or “superspreader” of the White House’s coronavirus outbreak because it has been followed by at least 11 attendees testing positive for COVID-19, including President TrumpDonald John TrumpQuestions remain unanswered as White House casts upbeat outlook on Trump’s COVID-19 fight White House staffers get email saying to stay home if they experience coronavirus symptoms White House says ‘appropriate precautions’ were taken for Trump’s outing to see supporters MORE, first lady Melania TrumpMelania TrumpGOP lawmaker calls on Pelosi to apologize for response to Trump contracting coronavirus White

Rose Garden event suspected of virus outbreak alarms D.C. health officials

October 3, 2020

The D.C. regulations do not cover federal property, meaning the White House was technically exempt, but the fallout has left city officials scrambling over how to respond. For now, they have deferred to the Trump administration for contact tracing efforts to contain the transmission of a disease that has killed more than 208,000 Americans.

Experts said contact tracing for an event with more than 150 people — who were on hand in the Rose Garden as Trump introduced his Supreme Court nominee, Amy Coney Barrett — would be extraordinarily difficult. Seven people besides Trump who were there have tested positive in recent days: first lady Melania Trump, former White House adviser Kellyanne Conway, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R), University of Notre Dame President John Jenkins, Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and an unnamed journalist.

It is not known how many others in the crowd have
