Federal retirement and Social Security benefits to increase by 1.3 percent in January

October 13, 2020
| Health Benefits

The increase applies only to annuity benefits for retirees, not to the salaries of current federal employees. Retiree COLAs are set automatically by an inflation index whose annual count concluded with the announcement Tuesday of figures through September.

In contrast, current employees receive pay raises set through the annual government budget process. No decision has been reached regarding a January 2021 raise.

President Trump has recommended a 1 percent pay raise while Congress so far has taken no position. If no figure is enacted into law by the end of the year, that amount will take effect automatically. Some members of Congress continue to advocate for increasing the figure to 3 percent to match the planned raise for military personnel.

For retirees, some COLA policies vary depending on which of the two main federal retirement systems applies to them.

Biden fans at nation’s largest retirement community

October 12, 2020

THE VILLAGES, Fla. (AP) — Sara Branscome’s golf cart whizzed down the smooth asphalt path that winds through The Villages, the nation’s largest retirement community, an expanse of beautiful homes, shops and entertainment venues that bills itself as “Florida’s Friendliest Hometown.”

Branscome’s cart was festooned with two American flags that flapped in the warm afternoon breeze. A line of oncoming carts bedecked with balloons and patriotic streamers chugged past while honking. Branscome jabbed her left foot on the horn pedal, then gave a thumbs-up.

“This gets you rejuvenated and ready for the next month or so, so we can do this and win. It gives you hope,” the 60-year-old retiree said.

Then she let out a whoop and two surprising words: “Go Biden!”

It’s not a cry that might be expected to resound in The Villages, and it’s certainly not one that is encouraging to President Donald Trump. Older voters

JACKSON COUNTY, MI — A Jackson-area retirement community has experienced an increase in deaths related to the novel coronavirus since an outbreak was first identified there in September.

John Ganton’s Countryside Care Center in Summit Township has reported 49 cases of COVID-19 in residents and 14 deaths from the virus since the pandemic began in March, according to data reported to the state as of Oct. 8. It has also reported 40 cases in staff.

Those figures are up from one death on Sept. 30, and 38 cases in staff. The number of COVID-19 cases in residents has stayed the same, the database shows.

“We are continuing to see positive cases but are working to the full extent possible to contain them and protect our residents and staff,” Countryside’s Director of Operations Crystal Caldwell said in an email Friday, Oct. 9.

Why Working During Retirement Could Hurt You From a Social Security Standpoint

October 8, 2020
| Health Benefits

Many seniors pledge never to work again after retirement, but others opt to work. For some, it’s a matter of needing the money. For others, it comes down to not wanting to be bored.

There are definitely perks to working during retirement, but if you choose to go that route, you should know that it could end up impacting your Social Security benefits — and not for the better.

How a higher retirement income could come back to bite you

If you hold down a job and collect Social Security before reaching full retirement age, your income from that job will be subject to the earnings test, and if it’s too high, you may have some of your Social Security benefits withheld. Once you reach full retirement age, however, that risk disappears. At that point, you can work and earn as much as you’d like without impacting your benefits.

Longtime MLB catcher Francisco Cervelli is retiring from baseball, he announced on Instagram. Cervelli said he is hanging up his spikes because it’s time to “put my health before my career.” The 34-year-old had seven documented concussions throughout his career, including one that ended his 2020 season in August.

Here is Cervelli’s retirement announcement:

“Today, I retire happy and fully satisfied, because I gave my heart and soul to this wonderful game,” Cervelli wrote. “I am retiring because the time has come to put my health before my career. For a long time, I put baseball first, through countless concussions and injuries, because this game was my life; my whole world. But it’s clear to me now that my future holds so much more. For the first time in a long time, I know my health and wellness needs to be the leadoff. It’s time.”

| Community Health

JACKSON, MI — A Jackson-area retirement community has seen unspecified rise in cases of the novel coronavirus since mid-September.

Ganton’s Countryside Care Center in Summit Township has reported a cumulative 49 cases of COVID-19 in residents and one death from the virus, according to data reported to the state as of Sept. 30. It has also reported 38 cases in staff.

None of the other seven Jackson County facilities in the state’s daily report have reported more than two cases in residents and nine in staff. Both of those statistics come from Arbor Manor Care Center, also run by Ganton’s Retirement Services.

The Jackson County Health Department declined to say how many cases are active at Countryside Care Center but confirmed health officials are working with the center to implement infection control methods, such as additional personal protective equipment, eliminating visitations and adequate staffing plans.

Why Claiming Social Security at 62 Could Be Your Best Retirement Move

October 1, 2020
| Health Benefits

Choosing when to begin claiming Social Security benefits is one of the most important retirement decisions you’ll make, because the age you file for benefits will affect how much you receive each month for the rest of your life.

Some people may advise waiting until age 70 to start collecting benefits, because you’ll receive significantly larger checks each month compared to if you’d claimed earlier. However, for many retirees, claiming as early as possible at age 62 is actually one of the best retirement decisions you can make.

Sometimes it pays to claim early

Social Security benefits are designed so that, in theory, you’ll receive roughly the same amount over a lifetime no matter when you begin claiming. If you claim early, you’ll receive smaller checks but more of them. Claim later, and you’ll receive fewer — but bigger — checks.

That said, you have to

5 Questions: Former Carlisle woman inspired by great-aunt's suffrage work

Frazier also developed a keen interest in infection control and applied his knowledge to the dental clinic’s day-to-day operations, she said. He was also a former CPR instructor for Sadler’s staff.

According to Frazier, community health centers play an important role in providing accessible, affordable dental care.

“I was born into poverty and didn’t have access to dental care,” Frazier said. “The opportunity to take care of the basic health care needs of people who fell through the cracks is what brought me to Sadler.”

Before joining Sadler in January 2001, Frazier spent more than 20 years as a dentist in the U.S. Army. He earned his Bachelor of Science from Bethany College in West Virginia and his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Howard University College of Dentistry in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the American Dental Association, Pennsylvania Dental Association, and the Organization for Safety,
