As President Donald Trump stood on a White House balcony Saturday — spewing mistruths about his opponent’s plan for policing and claiming the coronavirus is “disappearing” while hundreds of people watched from below — it was clear that his illness has taught him very little and he will continue to endanger Americans until Election Day.

There was a chance for a strategic pivot by the President after he contracted Covid-19 that would have helped him shore up his flagging approval ratings on the handling of the virus. After learning a great deal about coronavirus, as he claimed during his stay at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, he could have chosen a path of responsibility

Just as the US sees an upward trend in hospitalization rates, Trump has invited some 2,000 people for his speech from a White House balcony, which is just the latest sign of his staff and doctors acquiescing to his desires rather than following public health guidelines and common sense.

The large gathering follows Trump’s acknowledgment during a

“I think I’m going to try doing a rally on Saturday night if we have enough time to put it together, but we want to do a rally probably in Florida on Saturday night,” he said. “I might come back and do one in Pennsylvania the following night, and it’s incredible what’s going on. I feel so good.“

The president has been on a hiatus for public events after testing positive for the coronavirus last week.

PORTSMOUTH — The first in the nation federal health study on adults and children exposed to dangerous PFAS chemicals is slated to restart Thursday, Oct. 15.

Andrea Amico, co-founder of community advocacy group Testing For Pease, said “we were informed by ATSDR (the Agency For Toxic Substances and Disease Registry) that the Pease Health Study has been approved to reopen” pending final approval from an internal review board.

“I’m thrilled that this study is going to reopen and that members of our community can enroll,” Amico said Thursday. “This study is critically important to answering the questions and concerns of the community that have been impacted by PFAS exposure.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and ATSDR are conducting the PFAS health study.

Thousands of people working at Pease International Tradeport, along with children and infants who attended two day cares there, were exposed to multiple PFAS chemicals from

That incident, too, began on a weekend. It, too, left doctors and nurses to rely on paper backup systems.

Nebraska Medicine officials said last week that the health system’s emergency rooms had remained open since the outage began early Sept. 20, a Sunday, and no patients had been diverted to other hospitals.

No patients’ electronic medical records were deleted or destroyed, the health system said at the time, thanks to the system’s “backup and recovery processes.”

But when asked whether patients’ medical or financial information had been exposed, a Nebraska Medicine spokesman said the statement the health system provided contained all the information officials could provide.

Nebraska Medicine’s outage also affected hospitals in North Platte, Norfolk, Hastings and Beatrice for which the health system hosts electronic health records systems.

Electronic records at Great Plains Health in North Platte came back over the weekend and were up and running Tuesday with

By ANDREW DeMILLO, Associated Press

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Little Rock teachers’ union backed off its call Monday for teachers to only work virtually because of concerns about the spread of coronavirus in schools after dozens of teachers faced disciplinary action for not showing up for in-person classes.

Little Rock Education Association President Teresa Knapp Gordon said members on Monday night called off its action, which called on teachers to work virtually but not in person.

Sixty-nine teachers face disciplinary action, which includes the possibility of termination, for not showing up to teach classes in person, Superintendent Mike Poore told reporters The 21,000-student, state-run district has about 1,900 teachers. Classes remained open on Monday.

“There will be a form of discipline and that we’re working on over the course of the rest of the day,” Poore told reporters. Gordon on Monday night said the teachers had received notices
