Which states had the best pandemic response?

October 14, 2020

| Health

For this story, reporters interviewed a wide range of health researchers, public officials and academic experts to ask them which states were standouts in their management of the pandemic. What we heard repeatedly were lessons culled from a handful of states that others could follow.

We’ve distilled their insights into three categories that represent the greatest challenges states are facing: fighting the virus, managing the economic fallout and reopening schools.

FIGHTING THE VIRUS

Leading the way in the rural Northeast

Few states have a record as unblemished as Vermont.

The odds could have been stacked against the state. The virus arrived in Vermont during the first wave sweeping the country. It shares borders with some of the hardest-hit states and has the third-oldest population in the country.

But Vermont swiftly flattened its initial wave and has since gone weeks at a time

Virginia governor critical of Trump’s coronavirus response in first appearance since testing positive

October 14, 2020

| Health Article

About 65 staff members who had close contact with the Northams were told to self-isolate for two weeks. Northam said none tested positive, which he called “a testament” to the value of wearing masks.

He noted that masks protected several staff members who could not physically distance from him before he tested positive, including a press secretary, photographer and security detail who traveled in an SUV and airplane with Northam.

He contrasted that with the largely mask-free Rose Garden ceremony last month that Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s top infectious-disease expert, has called a superspreader event. Trump, first lady Melania Trump and several others subsequently tested positive for the virus.

“No masks, no social distancing — and look at the number of people that tested positive,” Northam said Tuesday, referring to the White House event. “We talk about science, it doesn’t get any clearer than that . . . I

Fact-check: Did Dr. Anthony Fauci praise Trump’s coronavirus response? – News – Austin American-Statesman

Donald Trump: Says Dr. Anthony Fauci said of Trump’s pandemic response, “I can’t imagine that … anybody could be doing more.”

PolitiFact’s ruling: Mostly False

Here’s why: A new campaign ad from President Donald Trump uses an out-of-context quote from Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, to tout Trump’s response to the coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 214,000 Americans.

“President Trump tackled the virus head-on, as leaders should,” the narrator of the ad says, before panning to Fauci to hammer home the point.

“I can’t imagine that … anybody could be doing more,” Fauci is shown saying.

The comment from Fauci was in reference to the White House coronavirus task force and the broader government response, not to Trump. It’s also almost seven months old. In a statement to CNN, Fauci said he felt his words were taken out of context.

The 30-second spot, titled

Poor domestic response to pandemic undermining UK’s global health announcements, experts say

LONDON — As the U.K. seeks to expand its role as a global health leader under Prime Minister Boris Johnson, it is being undermined by a poor domestic public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to experts.

The U.K. government has made a number of recent high-profile global health announcements. These have centered on increasing funding to the World Health Organization, along with calling for the agency’s reform, and joining the COVAX scheme for an equitable coronavirus vaccine, pledging to donate up to £571 million. Earlier this year, the U.K. was a leading donor to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations.

The global scale of the coronavirus disaster demands a global response | Coronavirus outbreak

October 9, 2020
| Global Health

The scale of the coronavirus crisis is hard to fully comprehend: globally, more than 30 million people have contracted the virus and nearly 1 million have died. The UN estimates that the pandemic will mean $8.5tn in lost output for the world this year and next. The wider social and economic costs – from poverty to mental illness to domestic violence – are almost impossible to quantify.

Yet the global scale of the disaster has not been met with a global response of the same magnitude. National governments have taken often drastic action to slow the spread of the disease. But while scientists working on diagnostics, therapies and vaccines cooperate across borders, the intergovernmental response has been marked by its absence. It also reflects the peculiarly inept and lamentable crop of global leaders from Washington to London, Moscow and Beijing.

The world should have been better prepared for a

Why Are Police the Wrong Response to Mental Health Crises? (ep. 122)

October 8, 2020

MOLLY KAPLAN
[00:00:01] From the ACLU, this is At Liberty. I’m Molly Kaplan, your host.

Over the last months, we’ve explored different conversations on the subject of policing: abolition, violence and accountability, protest and activism. Today, we’re digging into a topic that has gained more attention in the wake of Daniel Prude’s death in March at the hands of the Rochester Police Department.

We will dig into the startling connection between mental health 9-1-1 calls and police brutality. Studies show that nearly 50% of police victims are living with a disability, predominantly a mental health disability. In many ways, 9-1-1 has become the only option for people looking for mental health crisis intervention. And police often arrive at the scene armed with deadly weapons and a lack of mental health training. The results are devastating.

But there is hope. There are new alternatives to policing that can provide real care

SACRAMENTO, Calif. and ARLINGTON, Va., Oct. 8, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — California’s community health centers (CHCs) are facing significant lost revenue as a result of business disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fund investors include the Alliance Healthcare Foundation, The California Endowment, The California Wellness Foundation, JPMorgan Chase, Richard W. Goldman Family Foundation, and UnitedHealth Group.

Opinion | William Foege gives a scathing indictment of Trump’s pandemic response

October 8, 2020
| Health Center

Dr. Foege, an epidemiologist who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012, said he wasn’t sure what he would do in Dr. Redfield’s shoes, but the first thing “would be to face the truth.” Despite spin from the White House, “this will go down as a colossal failure of the public health system of this country. The biggest challenge in a century and we let the country down.” In the future, public health textbooks “will use this as a lesson on how not to handle an infectious disease pandemic.” The cause, he said, has been “the incompetence and illogic” of the White House.

Not placing the CDC in charge of the pandemic response violated “every lesson learned in the last 75 years that made CDC the gold standard for public health in the world,” he wrote. The need for a “coherent federal plan, the backbone of every former response,

New England Journal of Medicine blasts Trump officials’ response to virus, calls for new leaders

October 7, 2020

| Health Article

The New England Journal of Medicine on Wednesday, in an unprecedented editorial, denounced the Trump administration’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic and called for voting out “current political leaders” who are “dangerously incompetent.”

The harshly worded editorial is the first time the prestigious medical journal, which usually stays out of politics, has weighed in on an election.

The editorial does not mention President TrumpDonald John TrumpTrump and Biden’s plans would both add to the debt, analysis finds Trump says he will back specific relief measures hours after halting talks Trump lashes out at FDA over vaccine guidelines MORE by name, but it refers to “the administration” and calls for voting out “our current political leaders.”

“When it comes to the response to the largest public health crisis of our time, our current political leaders have demonstrated that they are dangerously incompetent,” the editorial states. “We should not abet them
