HOBOKEN, NJ — Elysian Charter School, one of the city’s three charter schools, confirmed over the weekend that it’s going all-remote for now. Sources said that the decision was made after a student at the K-8 school tested positive for coronavirus.

Vijay Chaudhury, a spokesman for Mayor Ravi Bhalla, said over the weekend, “Elysian Charter School has made the decision to go remote given recent developments and in consultation with the Hoboken Health Department. We are confident their precautions will help keep our children safe.”

A representative for the school, located at the north end of town, declined to discuss the matter further or say how long they’ll be closed, but said that they had informed the school community. This story will be updated if more information is received, such as a reopening date.

Pierce County Health: Schools Should Prepare For Remote Learning

October 10, 2020

PIERCE COUNTY, WA — Depending on how the county handles the coronavirus pandemic over the next two weeks, Pierce County schools may be forced to completely close all their classrooms once again near the end of October, according to the latest update from the Tacoma – Pierce County Health Department.

Recently the number of daily coronavirus infections in Pierce County has been on the rise, and Wednesday, the county passed a worrying threshold: reporting 75.6 new coronavirus infections per every 100,000 residents over the past two weeks. That’s just over the cutoff rate of 75 cases, pushing Pierce County from a “moderate risk” county to a “high risk” county under state guidance. That guidance strongly recommends that all high risk counties hold classes completely remotely, which Pierce County’s top health official says they will do if high case counts persist.

Chile scientists study potential coronavirus mutation in remote Patagonia

SANTIAGO (Reuters) – Scientists in Chile are investigating a possible mutation of the novel coronavirus in southern Patagonia, a far-flung region near the tip of the South American continent that has seen an unusually contagious second wave of infections in recent weeks.

Dr. Marcelo Navarrete of the University of Magallanes told Reuters in an interview that researchers had detected “structural changes” in the spikes on the distinctive, crown-shaped virus. He said research is underway to better understand the potential mutation and its effects on humans.

“The only thing we know to date is that this coincides in time and space with a second wave that is quite intense in the region,” Navarrete said.

The Magallanes region of Chile is largely a remote, glacier-strewn wilderness dotted with small towns and the regional hub Punta Arenas, which has seen cases of COVID-19 spike in September and October following a first wave earlier

Cope with mental health issues when you work remote.

Working from home has a lot of benefits. Who doesn’t love dressing in sweatpants every day, avoiding the commute and enjoying quality time with their dog? But working from home also has plenty of drawbacks—and some of those are related to a significant negative impact on mental health.

In April, a large study found 75% of people were experiencing social isolation and this was correlated with working from home. The more people worked from home, the more they felt socially isolated. Now, another just-released study is highlighting the same challenges, but with even greater reports of mental health challenges.

The just-released study by Oracle and Workplace Intelligence surveyed 12,000 people across 11 countries and found the following:

  • 78% of the global workforce reported negative impacts to their mental health this year.
  • 42% say their productivity has plummeted.
  • 41% say they

Leominster Mayor Dean Mazzarella is declaring a “public health crisis” over the educational situation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mazzarella’s office confirmed his decision Tuesday morning, after the mayor called a Monday evening meeting of the Leominster School Committee to discuss the possibility and the effects of remote learning on children and families.

“I thought long and hard about this and decided that it might be time to consider this as a public health crisis in the community,” he said during the meeting.

Mazzarella said members of the school committee flouted his meeting, leaving early in order to attend a workshop that could’ve been delayed.

“This, to me, is a priority. This, to me, is the most important thing happening in our community,” Mazzarella said.

The mayor said he had heard from numerous families who expressed concern over the effects of the district’s all-remote learning
