President Donald Trump temporarily left Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to wave at his supporters on Sunday, which was day 3 of his coronavirus hospitalization.

Possibly concerned about optics and taking publicity matters into his own hands, Trump, who was wearing a black face mask, was driven by his presidential motorcade in front of the D.C. hospital. Waving his bare hand from one of the black SUVs, Trump, 74, greeted the crowds of people who were waving “Make America Great Again” flags and posters.

Minutes prior to Sunday’s unannounced car ride, Trump tweeted another video from the hospital. “We’re getting great reports from the doctors. This is an incredible hospital, Walter Reed. The work they do is absolutely amazing. I want to thank them all, the nurses, doctors. I’ve also got to meet some of the soldiers and what a group,” he began.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump declared, “I get it,” in a message to the nation Sunday evening before briefly leaving the hospital to greet cheering supporters from his motorcade, a surprising move that suggested that his health – and his understanding of the coronavirus – may be improving.

Hours earlier, the president’s medical team confirmed that his blood oxygen level dropped suddenly twice in recent days. But they also said he could be discharged as early as Monday.

“It’s been a very interesting journey. I learned a lot about COVID,” Trump said, standing in his hospital room in a video posted on social media. “I learned it by really going to school.”

He added, “I get it, and I understand it.”

At least one medical professional inside Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where Trump has been hospitalized since Friday evening, questioned whether Trump had really learned anything.

“I came here, wasn’t feeling so well. I feel much better now,” Trump said in a video uploaded to his Twitter account. “I’ll be back, I think I’ll be back soon. And I look forward to finishing up the campaign the way it was started.”

Trump initially announced that he tested positive for COVID-19 early Friday. His diagnosis followed a positive test taken by senior adviser Hope Hicks.

“You don’t know over the next period of a few days, I guess that’s the real test,” he continued. “So we’ll be seeing what happens over those next couple of days.”

At a news conference at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., Saturday morning, Trump’s medical team suggested that the president tested positive for the coronavirus earlier than initially disclosed by the White House. The president’s physician, Sean P. Conley, later issued a “clarification” through the White House on that timeline, as well as the time frame in which the president was administered Regeneron, an antibody cocktail that was part of the complement of drugs Trump has taken to fend off the virus.

Conley also declined to answer specific questions about the president’s health, including how high his fever grew in recent days, when he last tested negative for the virus and whether he was ever administered supplemental oxygen since being diagnosed. A senior administration official later confirmed reports that Trump was given supplemental oxygen at the White House Friday before going to Walter Reed.

President Donald Trump is “doing very well” at Walter Reed National Medical Center after being hospitalized there for coronavirus, his White House doctor said Saturday.

“I feel like I could walk out of here today,” Trump told doctors, according to White House physician Dr. Sean Conley.

“The president is doing very well,” Conley said. “The team and I are extremely happy with the progress the president has made.”

The long-awaited briefing is the first detailed official update on Trump’s condition.

First lady Melania Trump, who has also tested positive, is reportedly doing much better than her husband and is recovering at home at the White House. Their teenage son, Barron Trump, has so far tested negative.

Trump announced his positive diagnosis early Friday after spending the day at a fundraiser at his Bedminster, New Jersey golf resort. White House aide Hope Hicks received a positive test earlier Thursday.

In a brief video message the president tweeted shortly after arriving at Walter Reed, he looked tired. He declared that he is “doing very well” and suggested that he was visiting the hospital only as a precaution.

“I think I’m doing very well, but we’re going to make sure that things work out,” Mr. Trump said in the 18-second video, filmed in the White House shortly before his departure for the hospital. “The first lady is doing

Trump, 74, went to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, in what aides said was a precautionary move. Officials said they expected him to be there for a few days.

Hours after arriving to the hospital, the White House released a memo from Sean Conley, the president’s physician, indicating Trump did not need to be put on oxygen but was starting remdesivir therapy, which is used for hospitalized adults who need oxygen but are not sick enough to require ventilation. Conley noted Trump was “doing very well,” had completed his first dose and was “resting comfortably.”
