Stocks recover on signs of Trump’s improving health

MILAN (Reuters) – Stocks and other risk assets rose on Monday as signs that Donald Trump’s health was improving brought relief to markets after the uncertainty of his COVID-19 infection sent investors rushing for safety last week.

The U.S. President, 74, was flown to a hospital for treatment on Friday, but his doctors said he had responded well and could return to the White House as soon as on Monday.

The MSCI world equity index .MIWD00000PUS, which tracks shares in 49 countries, was up 0.4% by 0812 GMT, supported by overnight gains across Asia and a positive start in Europe.

The pan-European STOXX 600 .STOXX rose 0.7%. S&P 500 futures EScv1 rose 0.5% and Nasdaq futures NQc1 0.8%, indicating a similarly strong start on Wall Street later.

Whitmer shifts nursing home policy with new ‘care and recover centers’

Lansing — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s administration moved Wednesday to select centers under stricter guidelines to help care for elderly individuals with COVID-19, altering a policy that’s drawn criticism during the pandemic.

Whitmer’s office announced an executive order Wednesday evening establishing what it called “care and recovery centers.” Whitmer’s administration made the changes five months after initially signing an executive order establishing “regional hubs.”

The regional centers — wings, units or buildings located in existing nursing homes across the state — will have to meet additional safety and preparedness standards compared to the state’s past regional hubs, which were put in place at the height of the pandemic to care for individuals discharged from hospitals or residing in facilities that couldn’t properly isolate them.

Existing regional hubs could potentially qualify as new “care and recovery centers,” also known as CRCs.

Universal Health Services, a large hospital system with more than 400 locations across the country, was still working Tuesday to get its network and operations back online after a cyberattack early Sunday morning.

“We are making steady progress with recovery efforts,” the Pennsylvania-based company said in a statement late Tuesday. “Certain applications have already started coming online again, with others projected to be restored on a rolling basis across the U.S.”

Nursing home volumes taking longer to recover than home health

Even as home health providers had recovered most of the volume lost during the pandemic by July, a new study finds skilled nursing volumes had not seen nearly the same improvement.

The analysis by consultancy Avalere Health found the skilled nursing industry suffered a bigger volume hit than home health providers at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and patients are taking longer to return to nursing homes. In July, skilled nursing facilities were taking in 34% fewer Medicare fee-for-service patients from hospitals compared with a year earlier. Home health’s volumes from hospital discharges, meanwhile, were down just 1.8% in that time.

The pandemic has prompted people to avoid residential facilities for older adults, including skilled nursing facilities, and the trend could stick around even after the pandemic subsides. COVID-19 exposed longstanding infection control and staffing problems in skilled nursing facilities and other long-term care facilities.
