Vice presidential debate: Kamala Harris claims she won’t take vaccine if Trump recommends

Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris said Wednesday that she would not take a vaccine recommended by President Trump during a heated debate clash over the White House’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Harris accused Vice President Mike Pence, head of the Trump administration’s coronavirus task force, of failing to disclose critical information to Americans in the early days of the pandemic. When asked about a poll showing half of Americans would not take a vaccine as soon as it is available, Harris indicated that she was skeptical of Trump’s involvement in the rollout of a potential vaccine.

“If the public health professionals, if Dr. Fauci, if the doctors tell us we should take it, I’ll be the first in line to take it, absolutely,” Harris said. “But if Donald Trump tells us we should take it, I’m not taking it.”

Covid-19 Vaccines Should First Go to Health Workers, First Responders, Group Recommends

| Global Health

Certain health workers and first responders should be the first to receive a Covid-19 vaccine when one becomes available, followed by people with health conditions that put them at higher risk of severe Covid-19 disease, a special U.S. committee recommended.

As supplies of vaccines rise, the committee recommended vaccinating groups like teachers, child-care staffers and transit workers. Only later should other groups and finally remaining Americans get vaccinated, the committee said in a report released Friday by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.

“You cannot reduce transmission when you have very few doses. That’s the time to prioritize directly the high-risk groups,” Saad Omer, a committee member and director of the Yale Institute for Global Health, said in an interview.

The committee also recommended that any vaccine be provided to people without any out-of-pocket costs, and that authorities take steps to overcome public reluctance to get vaccinated.

New Army field manual recommends midday naps

October 2, 2020

| Health

Oct. 1 (UPI) — The Army released a new field manual Thursday that officially embraces midday naps to help improve performance.

The new guide focuses on individual wellness rather than the health of whole units, and it updates the branch’s health and fitness recommendations for the first time since 2012.

In addition to encouraging afternoon napping, the Army plans to shift its hourlong early-morning training sessions to fitness training regimens tailored to individuals.

“This will require physical training to occur throughout the duty day, not just during a one-hour period in the early morning,” said Megan Reed, a spokeswoman for the Center for Initial Military Training at Fort Eustis, Va., which spearheaded the service’s health reform efforts outlined in the new field manual.

The new manual also has chapters on setting goals, visualizing success and “spiritual readiness.”

“We’ve made leaps and strides, by not looking at soldiers as carbon copies

Connecticut health department recommends against door-to-door trick-or-treating this Halloween

The Connecticut Department of Public Health issued Halloween guidance Thursday, urging against traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating this year.

The recommendations are in line with ones provided by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last month.

“Traditional Halloween activities carry a high risk for spreading COVID-19, but we can reduce that risk significantly by organizing and participating in fun, lower or moderate risk alternatives,” the health department said in a posting on its website. “The holiday may look different this year, but the Connecticut Department of Public Health (CT DPH) believes we can still enjoy a happy (and healthy) Halloween.”

Gov. Ned Lamont, at a news conference last month, had said he was not looking to cancel Halloween.

“It’s a time of the year when people automatically wear masks, they often wear gloves, so it seems like you’re 90% of the way towards a safe way to do Halloween just

The Army now recommends warm baths, meditation and naps

October 1, 2020

| Health And Fitness

The warriors known for waking up at the crack of dawn are now advised to get plenty of rest.

In a measure that may seem to contradict the motto “Army Strong,” the military branch’s latest exercise guidelines encourage recruits to practice aggressive napping, meditation and warm baths. The unorthodox activities are part of a revamp of the US Army’s physical-fitness training field manual, now called the “FM 7-22 Holistic Health and Fitness.”

“Soldiers can use short, infrequent naps to restore wakefulness and promote performance,” the booklet recommends, adding that they should “take longest nap possible” when “available sleep time is difficult to predict.”

In general, the Army manual suggests that soldiers get seven to eight hours of sleep a night, which soldiers can help facilitate by listening to soothing music or taking a warm bath before hitting their cots.

“The Army has always had an internal dynamic that real men
