Trump’s Drug-Discount Cards Expected to Reach Medicare Recipients After Election

October 14, 2020

| Health News

President Trump’s plan to send 33 million Medicare beneficiaries a card that can be used to help pay for as much as $200 in prescription drug costs won’t be completed until after the election, according to a person familiar with the plan.

The cards will be mailed in phases, with some likely going out later in October but most not until after the Nov. 3 presidential election, the person said. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is spending an estimated $20 million for administrative costs to print and send letters to Medicare beneficiaries informing them that they will be getting cards, the person said.

Plans for the overall drug-discount program have been sent to the Office for Management and Budget, the person said. It is unclear if or when the office will approve the program, which could cost $8 billion, the person said. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid

Colorado in “third wave” of COVID-19 as hospitalizations reach highest level since May, state health director says

October 13, 2020
| Dept Of Health

More Colorado residents are in the hospital for COVID-19 than at any point since late May, as hospitalizations surged past the peak of the state’s summer spike.

As of Monday, 288 people were hospitalized with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Colorado. The last time more patients were receiving hospital-level care for the virus was May 31, when the spring wave of the new coronavirus was receding.

Cases also took a turn upward last week after falling slightly the previous week. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reported 4,979 cases in the week ending Sunday, which is about 900 cases more than the state saw during the single-biggest week of the July surge.

The state did perform more tests last week than in late July, but the increasing rate of tests coming back positive indicates that’s not the only reason the number of cases is growing. About 4.5% of

Trying to reach herd immunity to the coronavirus is ‘unethical’ and unprecedented, WHO head says

October 13, 2020
| Health

“Never in the history of public health has herd immunity been used as a strategy for responding to an outbreak, let alone a pandemic,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a Monday media briefing. “It is scientifically and ethically problematic.”

In a public health context, herd immunity typically describes a scenario in which a large enough share of the population is vaccinated against a disease to prevent it from spreading widely, thereby providing default protection to a minority of people who have not been vaccinated.

But as there is still no vaccine for the coronavirus, achieving herd immunity in the current environment would require a large number of people to contract the virus, survive covid-19, and then produce sufficient antibodies to provide long-term protection.

While the scientific community has roundly rejected herd immunity the approach, public interest in it has waxed and waned amid pressure to reopen schools and

D.C. health department can’t reach White House for COVID-19 tracing, Bowser says

October 8, 2020

| Dept Of Health

WASHINGTON (AP) — Officials with the Washington, D.C., Department of Health have been unsuccessful in trying to connect with the White House to assist with contact tracing and other protocols regarding the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak that has infected President Donald Trump and several senior staff members.

“We have reached out to the White House on a couple of different levels, a political level and a public health level,” Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said Monday. She added that a D.C. health department representative who reached out to the White House “had a very cursory conversation that we don’t consider a substantial contact from the public health side.”

The lack of communication represents an unwelcome obstacle for the D.C. government, which has worked to contain the spread of the virus through mandatory mask requirements and limits on the size of gatherings.

Bowser acknowledged on Monday that White House medical officials “have their

Apple just expanded the reach of its iPhone health records feature

October 7, 2020

| Health Facts

Apple’s Heath Records feature, which allows iPhone users to download their medical records to their smartphone, is now available in the UK and is being used by two hospital trusts.

The feature, part of Apple’s Health app, gives iPhone users the ability to request and download their electronic health records as stored by hospitals using a direct, encrypted connection between their iPhone and the system used by the clinic. The Health app then periodically connects to pull across any new health records and notify the user when new records are available.

Currently in the US over 500 institutions support the Health Records feature on the iPhone across 11,000 locations.

In many cases, patients’ medical records are held in multiple locations, requiring patients to log in to each healthcare provider’s website to piece together their health information manually.

Scott subsequently made the switch to join the USA Women’s backroom staff in 2010 but, after playing her part in helping them to claim consecutive World Cups in 2015 and 2019, she returned to her native country’s national team set-up last year.

She is now tasked with preparing England for the 2021 European Championships on home soil but – in an exclusive interview with The Women’s Football Show – she gave some indication of how hard England will have to work if they are to improve.

| Global Health

Newark, NJ, Sept. 30, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — As per the report published by Fior Markets, the global health insurance market is expected to grow from USD 1465.8 billion in 2019 and to reach USD 2021.62 billion by 2027, growing at a CAGR of 4.7% during the forecast period 2020-2027.

The global health insurance market is witnessing significant growth from recent years. This growth is attributed to the increasing geriatric population, high medical costs, government initiatives for developing reimbursement policies for surgical procedures, and the need for an efficient flow of processes without any inconvenience caused due to the payment process. The increased cost of healthcare services and the high prevalence of lifestyle diseases will propel the market growth.

Health insurance is referred to as insurance that covers medical expenses that arise due to illness. These medical expenses can be related to hospitalization costs, cost of medicines or doctor consultation
