How Teens Handled Quarantine – The Atlantic

October 13, 2020
| Health

Some of our most interesting findings had to do with teens’ use of technology. When the pandemic hit and quarantine began, teens were unable to spend time with friends or fellow students face-to-face. Electronic communication became the primary way teens could interact with people outside of their families. Given that screen time, especially time spent using social media, has been associated with mental-health issues in teens, we wanted to understand how technology affected their mental health in quarantine.

To our surprise, teens’ technology use did not appear to increase dramatically during the pandemic when compared with 2018. Teens in quarantine were spending more time videochatting with friends and watching TV, videos, and movies on an electronic device. But they spent less time gaming, texting, and using social media.

We were surprised that social media, which is more connective, decreased, while passively watching television and videos increased during that same time.

Kentucky governor says he had busy work day in quarantine

October 12, 2020

| Health News

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky’s governor said Monday that he kept up a busy work schedule despite being confined to the governor’s mansion after being around someone who later tested positive for COVID-19.

Gov. Andy Beshear said he will follow the advice of state public health officials in determining how long he and his family remain quarantined at the mansion. His next COVID test is expected to be Tuesday and then Friday, he said. He added he tested negative last week.

“I’ve asked them (health officials) to treat me like anybody else out there,” the Democratic said. “So I’m going to follow all the rules and all the guidelines.”

Beshear said he had one of his busiest Mondays in a while, and that the biggest challenge of working in quarantine — away from his staff — was all the time he spent “staring at a screen.”

“I’m working,” he said.

Utah OKs shorter quarantine for students exposed to the virus at school

October 9, 2020

| Dept Of Health

Students and teachers who get exposed to the coronavirus at school may now only have to quarantine for seven days, according to new guidelines from the Utah Department of Health.

Under the updated policy, individuals can return to the classroom early — rather than waiting the full 14 days — as long as they meet three criteria:

• They were tested for the virus a week after exposure and their results came back negative.

• They and the positive person who exposed them were both wearing masks at the time of contact. (School administrators are responsible for determining this.)

• And they do not have symptoms. If any develop, “they should isolate at home and call their health care provider.”

The changes were quietly approved by health officials and sent out in an email by state Superintendent Sydnee Dickson to district and charter administrators Thursday, without any public announcement. A

Health experts thrash North Dakota’s new quarantine guidelines: ‘This is highly dangerous’

October 7, 2020
| Global Health

The new guidelines say that people who came into close contact with a positive case will no longer need to self-quarantine as long as both parties were wearing a mask. The definition of a close contact remains the same — a person who spends at least 15 minutes within 6 feet of someone who tests positive for COVID-19 — but now the state says the close contact no longer needs to quarantine as long as everyone was wearing a mask “consistently and correctly the entire time.”

Though public health officials around the country agree there’s significant evidence that wearing masks curbs the spread of COVID-19, The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead consulted with experts who said it is a step too far to suggest masks will eliminate the need to self-quarantine.

“This is the worst case of pseudoscience I’ve ever seen,” Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and

The city has seen a rise in new cases over the last month.

Salt Lake City’s latest rise in novel coronavirus cases has affected dozens of the city’s police officers, with at least 9% under quarantine ahead of Wednesday night’s vice presidential debate.

As of Tuesday evening, 17 officers tested positive for COVID-19, and 52 were in quarantine, Detective Michael Ruff told ABC News. On Monday, the department said 15 officers tested positive and 25 others were under quarantine.

A 2019 report by the Salt Lake City police department said the force had 542 uniformed officers, and Ruff could not say how much that number has changed over the year.

Ruff the department’s duties during the debate at the University of Utah shouldn’t be hindered because other agencies, including the university police,

Self-Isolating Commission Head Snubs EU Advice on COVID-19 Quarantine Length | World News

October 6, 2020

| Health

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said she would leave quarantine on Tuesday after having been in contact with someone positive for COVID-19 a week earlier, despite EU recommendations of 14 days of self-isolation.

Von der Leyen is following Belgium’s rules, which have just been softened, but her decision to ignore the stricter advice from the bloc’s public health body could further weaken calls for a EU common approach to battle the epidemic.

Von der Leyen, who is 61 and is a physician by training, said she would remain in precautionary self-isolation until Tuesday evening, after a person she came into contact with on September 29 in a meeting in Portugal tested positive on Sunday.

She tested negative for the virus on Thursday and Monday.

A spokesman for the Commission declined to comment on the EU recommendation but said the length of her

Trump Sets Bad Quarantine Example, LA Health Officials Warn

October 6, 2020

| Health Center

LOS ANGELE, CA — While wishing President Donald Trump a speedy recovery, Los Angeles County health officials Monday also wished he’d do a better job of following his own administration’s coronavirus health guidelines.

As the coronavirus outbreak tears through the White House and allied members of the Senate, County public health director Barbara Ferrer stressed the need for people who are infected or exposed to the virus to follow the rules for isolating and quarantining. She acknowledged that national leaders appear to be violating those mandates.

“Everybody is sort of wondering, `Aren’t these people supposed to be quarantining?’ or `Why aren’t they isolating?”‘ Ferrer said. “We want to be clear. Here in L.A. County we have really benefited from everyone doing their part around isolating and quarantining. … Even if you’re seeing other people that don’t seem to be really quarantining and isolating not only as we tell people it’s

Negative COVID-19 tests not a substitute for 14-day quarantine, experts say

October 2, 2020

| Health

The list of close contacts of President Donald Trump who have tested negative for COVID-19 continues to grow, but experts say it doesn’t mean they are off the hook: A single negative test doesn’t mean a person doesn’t have the virus.

“A negative is not a Get Out of Jail Free card,” Dr. Alan Wells, medical director of clinical laboratories at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Full coverage of the coronavirus outbreak

COVID-19 diagnostic tests look for bits of the coronavirus in a person’s body at that exact moment. But “it takes a number of days for the virus to replicate enough to be detected,” Wells told NBC News.

That’s why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises anyone who may have been exposed to quarantine for 14 days, which is believed to be the extent of the incubation period.

Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, Karen,

Trump Says He’ll Begin ‘Quarantine Process’ After Hope Hicks Tests Positive for Coronavirus

October 2, 2020
| Health News

President Trump said late Thursday on Twitter that he and the first lady, Melania Trump, would begin the “quarantine process” as they await results of coronavirus tests they took after a senior adviser who is often with the couple tested positive.

It was not immediately clear what Mr. Trump meant by the “quarantine process,” and White House officials declined to immediately provide any guidance. As of 11:30 p.m., the president still had a full day of events planned for Friday, including a private fund-raiser at the Trump International Hotel in Washington and a campaign rally in Florida. He was also scheduled to hold a call with “vulnerable seniors” about the coronavirus.

And even if Mr. Trump first tests negative for the virus, the incubation period for it can last nearly two weeks, meaning he will not be certain for several days that he does not have it.

The frantic moves
