Pandemic puts global progress against tuberculosis at risk: WHO

October 14, 2020

| Global Health

LONDON (Reuters) – The COVID-19 pandemic is derailing global efforts to tackle tuberculosis (TB), the world’s deadliest infectious disease, with cases likely to rise without urgent action and investment, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday.

The WHO’s annual TB report found that tuberculosis killed some 1.4 million people in 2019, little changed from the 1.5 million deaths it caused in 2018. It warned that many countries are not on track to meet targets for successfully diagnosing and treating cases to try to stop the disease’s spread.

Disruptions in services caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have led to major setbacks to TB programmes, the report found. In many countries, human, financial and other resources have been reallocated from TB to the COVID-19 response.

“Accelerated action is urgently needed worldwide if we are to meet our targets,” the WHO’s director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement with the report.

Personalized Health Care Puts You And Your Doctor In Charge

October 12, 2020

| Better Health

So much of the conversation over the first presidential debate focused on style that a serious point of substance got lost. Namely, what can we do to help all Americans get better health care at a much lower price?

Americans care about the answer. They want lower costs, more choices and access to high-quality care. They want to ensure that everyone, including people with pre-existing conditions, get the care they need when they need it.

What don’t they want? Mandates laid down by government bureaucrats or insurance companies to get in the way of health care decisions that belong to patients and doctors.

They want to be able to keep their health coverage and doctors when they change or lose their job.

They want transparency. Health care and drug prices should be made public so you know what you’ll pay before you buy it—effectively eliminating surprise medical bills.

The conservative

Soaring virus infection puts more French cities on alert

October 11, 2020

PARIS (AP) — Four French cities have joined Paris and Marseille in the maximum alert status to fight the spread of the coronavirus, and it appeared likely that the list would soon grow as infections soar.

Bars shut down and other severe measures are ordered under maximum alert.

Lyon, Grenoble and Saint-Etienne in the southeast and Lille in the north moved to maximum alert on Saturday when health authorities reported nearly 26,900 new daily infections in 24 hours. There were just under 5,000 new hospitalizations over the past week, with 928 of them in ICUs, and the positive rate for the increasing number of COVID-19 tests climbed to 11%. Nearly 32,690 coronavirus deaths have been counted in France, but the actual number is likely higher due to deaths at home and incomplete reporting from hospitals or rest homes.

While France girded itself for a climb in critical numbers, a consultation

Supreme Court puts on hold Trump administration request to reimpose medication abortion restrictions

October 8, 2020

| Health Article

“While COVID — 19 has provided the ground for restrictions on First Amendment rights, the District Court saw the pandemic as a ground for expanding the abortion right recognized in Roe v. Wade,” wrote Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., who was joined by Justice Clarence Thomas.

Alito said the court has “stood by” while officials imposed restrictions on religious activities and “drastically limited speech, banning or restricting public speeches, lectures, meetings, and rallies.”

The court’s action in this case cannot be squared with that, Alito wrote.

Chuang ruled in July that requiring an in-person visit to obtain the medications needed to induce abortion was unduly burdensome. There is no requirement that a woman take the medication in a clinic setting, and most take the pills that end a pregnancy in its early stages at home.

At the request of abortion providers and the American College of Obstetricians and

Seattle startup Picnic raised an additional $3 million from existing investors as it gears up for a commercial rollout of its pizza-making robot.

Vulcan Capital, Flying Fish Partners, Creative Ventures, Arnold Venture Group, and others put more money behind Picnic, known for its automated food preparation device that can churn out up to 300 12-inch customized pizzas per hour. It follows a $5 million seed round in November.

The fresh cash will be used for product development, response to customer interest, new hires, and marketing. The company has seen increased demand for its machine during the pandemic from customers looking for ways to prepare food with less contact.

“This work is important because we’re supporting struggling restaurants who are looking for any advantage that will help them weather the storm of losing 60% of their sales,” CEO

With each day since U.S. President Donald Trump reported that he tested positive for COVID-19, his doctors have added a new major therapy to treat the disease, for a total of three at this point.

On Friday—the same day that Trump said he tested positive—the President received an experimental combination of two monoclonal antibodies to help his immune system fight the coronavirus infection, according to his physician, Sean Conley. The next day—after he was hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center—he received the drug remdesivir, which blocks the coronavirus’s ability to make more copies of itself. Remdesivir is not

San Ramon Regional Medical Center is committed to the fight against breast cancer. Statistics indicate that one out of every eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent. Mammograms are the most effective form of early detection.

For patients who have been putting off their medical needs due to fear of coming to the hospital, there is no need to delay care. San Ramon Regional Medical Center continues to care for all patients with healthcare needs not related to COVID-19 and that includes providing routine mammograms and screenings. It’s important that patients do not put off routine screenings as that can create problems down the road.

Board puts off cut in pharmacy benefits until 2022

September 28, 2020

| Health Benefits

Implementation of the State and Public School Life and Health Insurance Board decision to kill the state’s pharmacy coverage for retirees eligible for Medicare Part D may be delayed a year, a joint legislative committee was told this morning.

However, Amy Fecher, secretary of the Department of Transformation and Shared Services, said the proposal to delay the change until Jan. 1, 2022, will deplete Employee Benefits Divison reserves for retirees and would require $3 million from the state to cover the shortfall.

The legislative hearing was the second about the board move.

Fecher said the new proposal would increase premiums by 5 percent for those who decide to keep the state plan until 2022. Those who decide to move to a Medicare drug plan will receive a $25 discount from their premiums in 2021. In 2022, those who move from the state plan to Medicare will get the discount. Fecher
