“With the confluence of the pandemic, layoffs, racial inequity, and an election year, we’re facing tremendous uncertainty, which unfortunately also gives rise to serious behavioral issues and suicide,” Newport Mental Health president and CEO Jamie Lehane said in announcing the $800,000 grant from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Administration.

NEWPORT — A federal grant will allow Newport Mental Health to establish a COVID-19 Emergency Suicide Prevention program for residents of Aquidneck Island.

Although suicide statistics since the beginning of the pandemic are incomplete, most mental-health experts expect to see a rise in attempts and fatalities without aggressive intervention.

In a letter to parents, Goho wrote, “The situation at the high school was exacerbated by the fact that RIDOH became aware of a positive student’s COVID-19 result early Sunday morning, and evidently RIDOH notified the student’s family at that time.

PROVIDENCE — After Gov. Gina M. Raimondo gave her approval this week to trick-or-treating and other Halloween festivities, state Health Director Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott gave guidelines for keeping the holiday safe during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We want Halloween to go on but it has to be done differently this year,” Alexander-Scott said Wednesday during a briefing with the governor.

One big difference:

“This is not the year for Halloween parties with people from outside of your household,” the doctor said.

But trick-or-treating has the seal of approval as long as a fewer concessions to the coronavirus are observed, she said.

For people distributing candy:

| Dept Of Health

The Rhode Island Department of Health is warning of a botulism risk with products sold by a Cranston store.

The Health Department is telling consumers to avoid juices, smoothies and sea moss gel from Health is Wealth Nutrition Center, which is located at 1674 Cranston Street.

No health issues have been associated with the products, but the Health Department is nevertheless telling consumers to throw them out.

Botulism is a rare but potentially fatal illness caused by a toxin that attacks the body’s nerves, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

The Health Department says it issued the warning because of the potential for processing, storage and control issues with the products. Inadequate processing allows for the survival of the toxin that can cause botulism, according to the Health Department.

Symptoms of botulism include weakness, dizziness, double vision and trouble speaking, swallowing, or breathing, according to the Health Department. Anyone
