One of the most significant questions about the novel coronavirus is whether people who are infected are immune from reinfection and, if so, for how long.

To determine the answer, University of Arizona Health Sciences researchers studied the production of antibodies from a sample of nearly 6,000 people and found immunity persists for at least several months after being infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

“We clearly see high-quality antibodies still being produced five to seven months after SARS-CoV-2 infection,” said Deepta Bhattacharya, PhD, associate professor, UArizona College of Medicine – Tucson, Department of Immunobiology. “Many concerns have been expressed about immunity against COVID-19 not lasting. We used this study to investigate that question and found immunity is stable for at least five months.”

The resulting paper, “Orthogonal SARS-CoV-2 Serological Assays Enable Surveillance of Low Prevalence Communities and Reveal Durable Humoral Immunity,” was published today in the journal

With four Chinese vaccine candidates in the final stage of human trials, it is still not clear whether Beijing plans to provide Covid-19 shots for free after the public health insurance agency said it would not pay for them.

Some advanced economies, including the United States, Australia and Japan, have said any Covid-19 vaccines they buy – provided they have been proven safe and effective – will be made available to their citizens for free.

But China’s National Healthcare Security Administration on Friday said the medical insurance system could not afford the “high cost” of vaccinating the population. It made the remarks in a public reply to a request for free vaccinations from an unidentified deputy of

A mobile site for COVID-19 testing developed for neighborhoods where traditional health care locations aren’t readily accessible will visit locations around the Lehigh Valley over the next few weeks.

The CATE Mobile Response Unit — CATE stands for Community Accessible Testing & Education — was developed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Highmark Blue Shield, Independence Blue Cross, and Latino Connection.

In collaboration with St. Luke’s University Health Network and other community partners, the unit will conduct COVID-19 testing for people who are showing symptoms or who have been exposed to the pandemic illness, while also educating the public on how to stay healthy and safe.

The unit’s tagline is “Sharing knowledge to erase fear,” which it accomplishes through widespread community health care and health education offered for free and with no insurance required.

CATE’s schedule is as follows:

Allentown (Flu shots also available): Buck Boyle Park, 10 Pump

When Stephen Smith was a sophomore in college, he started having anxious thoughts about his relationship with his girlfriend. Pretty soon he started worrying about other things, to the point where he couldn’t focus on anything else. Over and over again, as he tried to study or go to football practice, he couldn’t—these pernicious thoughts kept coming back, laden with a fear that something terrible was going to happen.

Smith spent months trying to find answers about what was going on in his mind, just so he could get his life back. He saw five different doctors. He got five misdiagnoses. He got five treatments for the wrong thing. He ended up spiraling so badly, he says, that he had to drop out of college and move home. One day, while searching his symptoms online, he came across other people with similar
