The University of Detroit Mercy will be adding a 40,000 square foot campus in Novi to offer additional graduate level and health education programs amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The university has acquired the former South University building, located at 41555 W. 12 Mile Road, as community demand for health care graduates increases during the pandemic. The new location will provide access to the institution’s nationally ranked programs for students who wish to stay close to home and their employer.

President Antoine M. Garibaldi said the new campus offers another example of the institution’s bright future as the state and country continue to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Detroit Mercy’s acquisition of this new campus will allow the university to expand academic programs in the health professions and other fields in which we are strong and that are in demand,” he said. “In addition to this campus’s proximity to several medical

October 12, 2020

| Community Health

SPRINGFIELD — Community crisis service programs can often help individuals struggling with a psychiatric emergency if no medical issue is involved.

“The Executive Office of Health and Human Services is working with providers like BHN to develop more community support and programs so fewer people will need inpatient level of care,” said Steve Winn, president and CEO of Behavioral Health Network.

That’s a priority at a time when many patients are forced to wait hours or days in a hospital emergency room before being admitted for inpatient psychiatric care. The phenomenon is called ER boarding, and health care professionals say it has gotten worse during the coronavirus pandemic and with the loss of psychiatric care beds in the region.

Winn said Behavioral Health Network recently opened a nine-bed “enhanced crisis stabilization unit” in Springfield.

“This helps keep people out of the ER or take people out of the ER who,

World Mental Health Day, October 10, arrives at a time during which corporate commitment to mental health and recovery is at the top of the news. One of the largest trends is in coaching programs, popularized in the 1980s. Historically, support for mental fitness has been most readily found at the extremes — the corporate elite and those with mental illness or substance abuse issues. Questions about how unregulated coaching programs differ from licensed medical professionals—and who’s best suited to help from a coach—are being asked by leaders nationwide.

I asked experts how they might explain the objective of business-related coaching programs in particular.

LPL Financial has struck a deal with Paychex to offer its affiliated independent advisors access to health care and other employee-related services.

With Paychex joining LPL’s Vendor Affinity Program, advisors can outsource payroll and a variety of benefits services with no minimum employee requirements, the independent broker-dealer said Thursday. Plus, they can roll out these benefits to their staff during the 2021 enrollment period, it added.

Advisors coming on board LPL’s Strategic Wealth Services platform, which was launched two months ago to support wirehouse and other employee advisors as they become independent business owners, also can tap into these human resources and benefits management services.

“Our advisors have told us they need a cost-effective healthcare solution, and they want to reduce the risk and administrative burdens of healthcare, payroll and HR. We have listened,” said Andy Kalbaugh, head of National Sales and

University at Buffalo researchers have received a grant from the Community Pharmacy Foundation to help add community health workers to pharmacies to better connect patients to critical services and lower health care costs.

Community health workers are public health workers that serve as liaisons between health care services and the public. Not typically utilized in pharmacies, these frontline workers have the potential to improve patient care through community outreach and education, informal counseling, social support and advocacy.

Through the grant, investigators will develop a toolkit and payment model that guides pharmacies through embedding a community health worker program into practices, as well as analyze each program’s impact.

The research – a collaboration between the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Community Pharmacy Enhanced Services Networks (CPESN) USA, L&S Pharmacy in Charleston, Missouri, and Four Corners Pharmacy in Delmar, New York
