NIAMEY, Niger (AP) — The World Food Program won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for fighting hunger and seeking to end its use as “a weapon of war and conflict” at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has driven millions more people to the brink of starvation.

Announcing the prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said it wished “to turn the eyes of the world towards the millions of people who suffer from or face the threat of hunger.”

The committee also said it hoped that bestowing the prize on the U.N. agency would highlight the need to strengthen global solidarity and cooperation in an era of go-it-alone nationalism.

“We are sending a signal to every nation who raises objections to international cooperation,” committee chair Berit Reiss-Andersen said. “We are sending a signal to this type of nationalism where the responsibility for global affairs is not being faced.”

The World Food Program was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for its efforts to combat a surge in global hunger amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has swept around the world with devastating impact.

The Nobel committee said that work by the organization, a United Nations agency, to address hunger had laid the foundations for peace in nations ravaged by war.

“In the face of the pandemic, the World Food Program has demonstrated an impressive ability to intensify its efforts,” Berit Reiss-Andersen, the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, said as she announced the prize in Oslo. “The combination of violent conflict and the pandemic has led to a dramatic rise in the number of people living on the brink of starvation,” she added.

In many nations, particularly those at war, the combination of conflict and the pandemic has sharply increased the number of people on the brink of

The World Food Program (WFP), a United Nations organization dedicated to combating conflict by addressing food insecurity around the globe, has won this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. Announcing the win Friday, the prize committee cited the WFP’s efforts to “prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.”

In recognition of the honor, the Rome-based organization will receive a 10-million krona—about $1.1 million—cash prize. As the Associated Press reports, the WFP’s annual budget dwarfs this figure. The world’s largest humanitarian group focused on food security, it has already received about $6.4 billion in cash and goods, including more than $2.7 billion from the United States, in 2020.

Global food insecurity rates were already high at the start of this year. In 2019, a record 135 million people worldwide suffered from acute hunger—an uptick due in part to an increase in war and armed conflict. Last year, the

NEWPORT — A federal grant will allow Newport Mental Health to establish a COVID-19 Emergency Suicide Prevention program for residents of Aquidneck Island.

Although suicide statistics since the beginning of the pandemic are incomplete, most mental-health experts expect to see a rise in attempts and fatalities without aggressive intervention.

Beijing on Thursday joined the $18 billion Covax initiative that aspires to give lower-income countries the same access to vaccines as wealthier nations, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said. Details of China’s commitment, including its amount of funding, weren’t immediately disclosed.
