California releases guidelines for private gatherings with friends

October 13, 2020

Ahead of the Halloween and Thanksgiving holidays, California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly addressed new guidelines the state released this week allowing private outdoor gatherings with friends if specific conditions are met.

Ghaly said attendees must be from no more than three separate households and gatherings should last no more than two hours.

Gatherings “should be and must be done outside,” he added. People are also expected to take safety precautions, including wearing masks, practicing physical distancing and washing hands.

In the past, the state discouraged any gatherings outside of a single household.

Ghaly said the guidelines are meant to recognize that many close friends and relatives have been apart a long time and increasingly want to be together, especially with the holidays ahead.

The intention of the guidelines is not to encourage gatherings, but to inspire people to socialize safely when they do.

CHICAGO (WLS) — A trend catching on in Europe could soon be coming to your office place or other establishments.

While the concept of issuing special passes for those who could be coronavirus-free sounds like a great way to move towards some normality in our economy, questions about its reliability and privacy are raising some concerns.

With just another app on our smartphone, the technology could be used as potential proof you don’t currently have COVID-19 or display test results showing you have antibodies. Having this information at your fingertips could one day allow you to go places and do things others can’t but not everyone likes the idea.

On the other hand, there is no guarantee that antibodies give you immunity, plus COVID-19 tests quickly be dated depending upon exposure.

“I think when designing these systems can be done with a key privacy-preserving way is. Let’s say it is

Massive Consolidations Taking Place Across Health Care, Especially Among Private Practices | News

PALM BEACH, Fla., Oct. 7, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — In the U.S., family physicians are front-line caregivers to people from different socioeconomic backgrounds in urban and rural areas across the 50 states. One in every five office physician visits is made to a family physician which accounts for around 192 million visits annually. Family physicians are an integral part of the rural primary care system and the U.S. healthcare system relies, in a major way, on primary care doctors to lower the overall Medicare spending. Government bodies have realized the importance of primary care physicians in developing a value-based healthcare system in the U.S. and have undertaken various initiatives to bridge these gaps between revenues of different specialties. These initiatives are anticipated to empower primary care physicians to spend more time with patients rather than performing other administrative work. A report from Grand View Research predicts that the U.S. primary

| Dept Of Health

October 2, 2020

Hennepin County Public Health is aware that the President participated in a fundraising event that took place at a residence in the county, during his infectious period. We learned about this event through the local media. From media reports it appears that a number of people may have had close contact with the President that may have resulted in exposure to COVID-19.

Thus far we have not been contacted with a list of event attendees, so it is unclear how many of those people are residents of Hennepin County. It is our practice to do the contact investigation and contact tracing only for residents of our county. When we receive contact information for any Hennepin County residents in attendance, we will follow our usual contact tracing protocol, and will advise that they be tested and quarantine for 14 days from the date of the event.

As always,

Otay Mesa detainees say shift of health services to private contractor complicates care

October 4, 2020

| Health Center

After spending the first part of the pandemic in the public spotlight for a large COVID-19 outbreak at Otay Mesa Detention Center, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has contracted out medical care at the facility to the private prison company that owns and operates it.

Detainees interviewed by the San Diego Union-Tribune say the medical care, which had already been criticized by them and their advocates, has grown even worse than it was under ICE.

Detainees complained of missed and late medications, multiple-day waits for medical attention and a lack of transfer of records that left staff in the dark about what treatment individual detainees were supposed to be receiving. It has also meant that those who had been approved for specialty care, such as oncology and orthopedics, would have to begin the lengthy process anew.

“The first couple of days, it was chaos,” said Guillermo Alvarez Mendonza, a detainee with

High costs for hospital care and prescription drugs are causing more employers to be open to government regulation. (Associated Press)
High costs for hospital care and prescription drugs are causing more employers to be open to government regulation. (Associated Press)

U.S. employers, battered by rising hospital and pharmaceutical prices, are increasingly open to a bigger government role in healthcare, including regulating prices and expanding Medicare to more working Americans.

In one recent survey, more than three-quarters of responding employers said government regulation of drug prices and hospital rates would be “very helpful” or “somewhat helpful.”

About half said a “Medicare public option” — usually understood to mean expanding eligibility for the large government health plan to younger Americans — would be helpful, according to the survey by the National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions, which represents employers that provide health benefits to their workers. That’s up from about 4 in 10 employers who responded to last year’s survey.

“A lot of employers feel the private market in healthcare isn’t serving
