KFF Survey Finds Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance Premiums Rose 4% in 2020

Family premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance rose 4% over the past year, averaging $21,342, according to the benchmark Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) 2020 Employer Health Benefits Survey.

Conducted from January to July of this year, the annual survey, whose findings were also published in the journal Health Affairs, polled 1765 nonfederal public and private firms on their employer-sponsored health coverage, including premiums, employee contributions, cost-sharing provisions, offer rates, wellness programs, and employer practices.

Although it does not capture the full scope of the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on health care costs and coverage, survey results still exhibit the rising cost that employees are responsible for contributing. On average, the study found that workers are paying $,588 in out-of-pocket costs toward family coverage, with employers paying the remaining amount.

“Conducted partly before the pandemic, our survey shows the burden of health costs on workers remains high,

Family health insurance premiums surpass $21,000 before the pandemic

October 9, 2020

The average premium for family coverage in employer health plans is up about 4% this year to more than $21,000 — and employers are picking up more of the tab.

Workers on average aren’t being asked to pay more in premiums for family coverage and those with individual coverage through their work aren’t seeing increases in deductibles, according survey results Thursday from the California-based Kaiser Family Foundation.

The findings speak to the stability of health benefits in the pre-pandemic economy when employers were competing for talent in a tight labor market, said Matthew Rae, an associate director at the foundation, which has surveyed employers on health plan costs for 22 years. Obviously, the current labor market is vastly different, Rae noted, with last month’s unemployment rate roughly twice the comparable figure last year.

“The premiums and health plans that we were asking about were plans that employers were setting a

Employer-sponsored health insurance premiums rose 4 percent in past year: analysis

Employer-sponsored health insurance premiums rose 4 percent over the past year, outpacing the increase in workers’ wages and the rate of inflation, according to an analysis released Thursday by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Average annual premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance are now $7,470 for a single plan and $21,342 for a family plan, up 4 percent from the previous year. Those dollar amounts include both worker and employer contributions.

Meanwhile, wages increased by 3.4 percent alongside 2.1 percent inflation.

About 157 million people get their insurance through work, and the costs have steadily risen over the years.

The average premium for family coverage, including the employer contribution, has increased 22 percent over the last five years and 55 percent over the last decade.

In 2020, on average, workers contributed 17 percent of the premium for single coverage — about $1,243 — and 27 percent for family coverage, or about $5,588.

How much health insurance premiums cost if you retire early

October 3, 2020

| Health Plans

Health insurance is a large budget item for many Americans.

The average health insurance plan costs nearly $5,500 per year for an individual and close to $14,000 for a family, according to a 2020 study by eHealth.

Those totals vary based on factors like your age, where you live and whether or not you receive employer or government subsidies.

And if you are among the 49% of Americans who receive health insurance through your job, there is a good chance your health insurance will get much more expensive. Especially if you retire before becoming eligible for Medicare at age 65.

The millions of people with nongroup insurance, however, may become eligible for subsidies if their income drops enough in retirement.

Check out this video to hear from people who retired early and to learn how much you can expect to pay for insurance if you retire early.

Neiman Marcus employees are among those who have been asked to pay their portion of health insurance premiums while they were on furlough. According to a letter sent to employees, Neiman Marcus employees have to reimburse the company for those deferred premiums “upon 60 days of return” to work.

Most companies don’t pay 100% of premiums and instead split premium costs with their workers. Workers furloughed in March and April and called back in August or September could be billed for a couple

Simply Save podcast | New-look health insurance policies: Advantage customers, but premiums could rise

Come October 1 and your health insurance policies are all set to acquire a new look. This is because all health insurance contracts renewed after this date will have to comply with the new Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) guidelines on standardisation. New products launched after October 1, 2019 are already compliant with these norms, which are expected to reduce disputes between insurers and policyholders considerably.

The insurance regulator issued the guidelines last year, asking insurers to standardise exclusions – that is, expenses that will not be paid for – and definitions of certain terms such as pre-existing diseases.

Also, policies cannot be called into question after eight continuous years of renewal, except in cases of proven fraud. Moreover, the IRDAI has also allowed insurers to cover modern forms of
