Lee Dingle, 37, was playing in the ocean with three of his six children on a family vacation when he was struck and killed by a powerful wave.

Two weeks after the freak accident killed her husband in July of 2019, Shannon Dingle discovered she was pregnant with his baby.

“I was terrified,” Shannon, a 38-year-old writer from North Carolina, told TODAY Parents, noting that she lives with chronic health conditions that would make pregnancy life-threatening.

Shannon, a former pro-life speaker, began preparing for an abortion. She didn’t tell anyone.

“I needed to sort through it by myself and I didn’t want anyone to convince me to change my mind,” Shannon explained.

Three of the Dingle’s children have special needs: cerebral palsy, HIV and autism.

“I couldn’t do it without my person. I couldn’t do

COVID-19 may have prolonged effect for pregnant women

October 12, 2020

| Health News

COVID-19 symptoms can last a long time in pregnant women, researchers say.

The new study included 594 pregnant women, with average age 31, across the United States who tested positive for the new coronavirus but were not hospitalized. Nearly one-third were health care workers.

On average, the women were about 24 weeks’ pregnant when they joined the study.

The most common early symptoms were cough, at 20%, sore throat, at 16%, body aches, at 12%, and fever, at 12%. By comparison, fever occurs in 43% of hospital patients who are not pregnant.

For 6%, loss of taste or smell was the first symptom. Other symptoms included shortness of breath, runny nose, sneezing, nausea, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea or dizziness.

While six out of 10 women had no symptoms after four weeks, symptoms lasted eight or more weeks for 25%, the study found.

Thirty-seven days was the median time for symptoms

Kate Middleton pregnant: Duchess’ illness ‘sign of good health’ amid pregnancy | Royal | News

Royal fans were left concerned for the Duchess of Cambridge after reports emerged that she had been taken to King Edward VII Hospital in London, spending a few days recovering from a case of hyperemesis gravidarum. The spotlight has shone on women in the Royal Family in recent weeks with supporters debating who will follow in Princess Eugenie’s footsteps and announce they are expecting. Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank recently confirmed they were to welcome their first child to the Windsor fold in the early part of next year.

Many believe Kate and husband William may want a fourth addition to the Cambridge family, especially after the Duchess movingly spoke about her life as a mother on a recent podcast.

But back while she was pregnant with George, the public were concerned for Kate – and the future heir.

Hyperemesis gravidarum is an acute morning sickness which requires supplementary

The Best Folic Acid Foods and the Benefits for Pregnant Women

October 6, 2020

| Health Food

Though doctors now routinely recommend folic acid supplements and folic acid-rich foods to pregnant women, its role in supporting a healthy pregnancy wasn’t recognized until the mid-1960s. But there are benefits to having folic acid foods before pregnancy. By the early 1990s, the connection between folic acid and fetal development was so well-established, the CDC started recommending that all women of child-bearing age consume at least 400 micrograms of folic acid every day. In 1998, the Food and Drug Administration went a step further and started requiring that folic acid be added to enriched grain products, like pasta, rice, and cereal.

That’s how crucial folic acid is for pregnancy and fetal development. Health professionals recommend that foods high in folic acid are eaten regularly beginning up to a year prior to conception. Many would-be parents treat this as a minor dietary diversion, plucking a bit more

Experts call for including pregnant women in COVID-19 vaccine trials

October 6, 2020
| Health News

More than 210,000 people in the U.S. have died from COVID-19, and tens of thousands are testing positive daily. The best way to defeat the pandemic is with a safe vaccine that can protect a large share of the population, especially people at higher risk of exposure, such as frontline health workers, and those more vulnerable, such as the elderly and, some health experts maintain, pregnant women. The data on whether pregnancy increases the risk for coronavirus infection or leads to more complications is incomplete, but there are preliminary indications that it is a potential risk factor.

By the workings of “herd immunity,” a vaccine wouldn’t even have to be given to everyone; if a large enough portion of the population is protected from infection, the virus won’t be able to keep spreading. The country is nowhere near that point at present.

It is encouraging to know that there are

For Pregnant Women, Stigma Complicates Opioid Misuse Treatment

October 6, 2020

| Community Health

New and expectant mothers face unique challenges when seeking treatment for an opioid use disorder. On top of preparing for motherhood, expectant mothers often face barriers to accessing treatment, which typically involves taking safer opioids to reduce dependency over time. The approach is called medication assisted therapy, or MAT, and is a key component in most opioid treatment programs.

But with pregnant women, providers can be hesitant to administer opiate-based drugs.

According to a study out of Vanderbilt University, pregnant women are 20% more likely to be denied medication assisted therapy than non-pregnant women.

“In the beginning, I was so scared as a new provider to write my first prescription for medication assisted therapy to pregnant women,” said Dr. Linda Thomas-Hemak of the Wright Center for Community Health in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

The health center serves low-income individuals who are underinsured or lack insurance altogether, many of whom struggle with opioid

Kate Middleton pregnant: Duchess’ health concern made life ‘difficult’ amid pregnancy | Royal | News

Baby fever has once again gripped Royal Family fans, after Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank announced they were set to welcome their first child to the Windsor fold early next year. Admirers of the Royal Family have continued to speculate as to whether Eugenie’s sister Princess Beatrice, or fellow Windsor favourite Kate, will also confirm they are expecting. The Duchess of Cambridge has also been in the spotlight in recent weeks regarding whether she is pregnant or not after she discussed being a mother on a podcast.

But during her first pregnancy with Prince George, fears were sparked over Kate’s health after she was hospitalised with hyperemesis gravidarum, a rare form of acute morning sickness.

The condition, which saw Kate spend “a few days” in hospital, often leads to weight loss and doctors confirmed that it accounts for around two percent of all morning sickness.

Dr Ashley Roman,

Many pregnant people aren’t getting flu shots, but these bills could help

October 1, 2020

| Health News

This article was originally published by The 19th on Sept. 29, 2020.

Despite heightened risk of severe complications, pregnant people often don’t get flu shots or the TDAP vaccine, which protects against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough. People insured by Medicaid — which covers almost half of all births in the country — are far less likely to get those shots compared to those on private insurance.

Two new pieces of bipartisan legislation are trying to address that by eliminating the cost-barriers that often keep pregnant people from getting necessary vaccinations.

The two bills, shared first with The 19th, are jointly backed by Sens. Maggie Hassan, a New Hampshire Democrat, and Bill Cassidy, a Republican from Louisiana. The first would require that Medicaid plans cover these vaccines during pregnancy without any out-of-pocket costs for patients, along with any other immunizations recommended by the federal Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. The
