| Health Facts

ALBANY – St. Peter’s Health Partners Medical Associates has notified more than 500 patients who might have fallen victim to a privacy breach.

In a Tuesday press release, St. Peter’s said certain payment information contained in bank deposit bags between March 2 and July 20 for 14 practice locations in the Albany area, may be missing. The missing payment information is associated with cash, checks and credit card payments. The missing information does not include credit card numbers.

In a letter, mailed on Tuesday, St. Peter’s notified the 544 patients affected and offered them free credit protection and identity-theft services for one year.

Prior to discovery of the missing information, payments had been credited to individual patient accounts.

“SPHPMA takes this incident and the protection of our patients’ protected health information extremely seriously,” Privacy Officer Kate Barnhart said in a statement. “We apologize for the inconvenience and deeply regret any

Johnson & Johnson pauses clinical trials for a COVID vaccine over patient illness

October 13, 2020

| Health

Johnson & Johnson has paused its clinical trials for a COVID-19 vaccine following a patient illness, just weeks after it announced it was in its final stage.

A pause is not entirely unexpected in vaccine trials. When another vaccine trial was temporarily stopped last month, experts hailed the move, pointing to it as an example of the scientific rigor that is being maintained despite the understandably intense public interest for a COVID-19 vaccine.

The Johnson & Johnson trial was paused after an “unexplained” illness in one of its participants and in compliance with regulatory standards, the company said in a news release Monday night. The pharmaceutical company said the patient’s condition was being reviewed and evaluated by the ENSEMBLE independent Data Safety Monitoring Board.

“We must respect this participant’s privacy,” the company’s statement said. “We’re also learning more about this participant’s illness, and it’s important to have all the facts

Health systems seek out patient feedback to improve telehealth platform

October 10, 2020

| Health Magazine

The pressure is on for health systems to create digital experiences patients will enjoy or risk losing out on revenue. In the digital age, consumers have high expectations of what these platforms should be like. “Systems are no longer just competing with other health systems in their region, they are competing with the experiences people have in their daily lives from other brands—that is the bar,” Kalis said. “When those experiences are cumbersome, that can lead to choosing one provider over another … and in the most extreme case, even switching providers.”

Telehealth’s increased popularity has prompted Stanford Health Care to totally rethink how it is assessing patients’ experience with the platform. The California system now does about 62,000 telehealth visits a month, up from about a 1,000 a month before COVID-19.

Now that volumes have stabilized and are staying strong, Alpa Vyas, vice president for patient experience at Stanford,

A woman with borderline personality disorder (BPD) is keen to dispel the misconception patients are a danger to others.

Sarah Coulthard-Evans, 36, was diagnosed 10 years ago after doctors repeatedly dismissed her symptoms as depression.

Having self-harmed and even attempted suicide several times, Coulthard-Evans was eventually sectioned.

Years of therapy allowed her to “heal massively and make sense of what happened in her life”.

Coulthard-Evans, who lives in Northampton, moved into supported accommodation in the community on 18 March, just five days before lockdown.

Now in a better place, Coulthard-Evans manages her disorder with medication, monthly calls with a psychiatrist and plenty of sleep.

Coulthard-Evans hopes to raise awareness of BPD, stressing patients are “more dangerous to themselves than anyone else”.

Hospital Debates Penis Transplant in Transgender Patient

October 9, 2020
| Health

In a move that could revolutionize gender-reassignment surgery, hospital officials in Boston are considering whether to allow a first-ever penis transplant in a transgender man. Surgeons hope to attach a dead man’s penis to the groin of a patient born as a biological female.

“This would be a quantum leap if you were able to transplant a real penile structure. It’s certainly pushing the boundaries,” Curtis Cetrulo, MD, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital, told MedPage Today. “We’re ready to do it, and we could do it pretty soon if we get it approved. I’m hopeful we can do it. It would be super-helpful to a lot of these [transgender] patients.”

Surgeons in the U.S. and South Africa have only performed a handful of successful penis transplants, all in adult men who lost their genitals to cancer or trauma. Cetrulo led a landmark 2016 transplant surgery in

October 7, 2020

| Good Health

Ranchi: Medical experts in the state have recommended that recovered Covid-19 patients and those who have mild symptoms should not be tested before their discharge from healthcare centres but sent for 10-day home isolation.
The recommendations came six months after the pandemic hit the state and various changes were made in protocols of quarantine, isolation, treatment and discharge procedures. After having dealt with a total of over 87,000 infections, the experts now said repetitive tests, which can show positive results, have severe adverse impacts on these patients. They have negligible chances of infecting others but suffer from anxiety and depression even after the beating the virus because of the results, the experts said.
Talking to TOI, Dr Jitendra Kumar, a senior microbiologist at the CCL Central Hospital here said, “In asymptomatic patients, the virus load is less and weakened while patients showing symptoms have the virus multiplying inside them. But

Knowing she had two brothers with kidney disease, she asked her primary care physician for a referral to a nephrologist.

Hernandez recalls her doctor saying that her kidney lab results were good, and there was no reason she should see a nephrologist. But Hernandez, a Chicago mother of four, said she had a feeling she had kidney disease too.

The referral was given, and the nephrologist biopsied her kidneys in 2016. Her kidneys were operating at only 30%

Mayo Clinic is notifying more than 1,600 patients that a former employee inappropriately accessed their health records, but apparently did not retain any information gleaned from them.

The Rochester-based health system said in a statement Monday afternoon that an unnamed health care worker looked at electronic “data elements” including patient names, demographic information, dates of birth, medical record numbers, clinical notes and, in some cases, medical images.

“Access was limited in duration, and Mayo has no evidence that any data was printed or retained by the former employee,” Mayo’s statement said. Social security numbers, payment card information and bank account numbers weren’t accessed.

Mayo is not identifying the former employee, but a spokeswoman confirmed the person is a licensed health care worker whose applicable licensing boards have been notified.
